SAVANNAH, GA, MARCH 19, 2017 - Live Oak Public Libraries in partnership with BEATA Productions will host a free screening of  "Uncommon Grace: The Life of Flannery O'Conner",  the first-ever feature length documentary about the beloved Savannah native, one of the most celebrated writers of the 20th Century. The screening will be held at the historic Bull Street Library on Saturday, March 25th at 3 p.m.

The film has been broadcasting on PBS stations across the country. It also has been featured at several film festivals and won "Best Documentary" at a recent Georgia Film Festival.

An icon of Southern literature, O'Connor is best known for works such as "A Good Man Is Hard To Find," "Good Country People," and "Everything That Rises Must Converge".

"Uncommon Grace: The Life of Flannery O'Connor"  traces the people and events that would help shape her remarkable career, including her upbringing in the class-conscious South of the 1930s and her battle with the autoimmune disease lupus, which would ultimately take her life at age 39.

The film also examines the central role that O'Connor's Catholic faith played in her fiction, which often focused on the darker side of human existence. "All my stories are about the action of grace on a character who is not very willing to support it," she once declared.

"The fact that O'Connor stories elicit so many interpretations is part of what makes them so compelling," said director Bridget Kurt. "I thought it was important to highlight what the writer believed about her own work, which is sometimes overlooked."

"Uncommon Grace" features commentary from numerous O'Connor experts, including literature professor David King, biographer Brad Gooch and O'Connor friend William A. Sessions. The documentary also includes dozens of rare photographs.  The special library event will occur on O'Connor's birthday. Bull Street Library is located at 2002 Bull Street in Savannah, Georgia.
