LLCS Focuses on Caring as Part of Character Education

Throughout the month of December and into January students and staff at Long Lake Central School are focusing on the trait of caring. This is part of a character education program that the district began in November and it is based on the six pillars of character - respect, caring, responsible, trustworthy, fairness, and citizenship. The district will focus on each trait throughout the school year.

To kickoff the trait of caring, students in pre-Kindergarten-12th grade were assigned buddies. The PK-6 students are paired with a "big buddy" in  grad
7-12 . On December 4, the buddies spent the morning together talking about what caring means to them as well as getting to know one another.

They then spent time posting their individually designed bear paws on the wall of the school. The students will write cards to one another from now until the holiday break and on the day before school lets out they will spend time decorating an ornament together.

Students colored their bear paws for "pawsitive citizens", which are displayed in the school hallway.

The Character Ed Task Force - Elisha Pylman, Tim LeMere, Michelle Billings, and Allison Conboy - is made up of faculty and staff members who are developing the program. In addition to organizing the big buddy activities the group also has organized a clothing and food drive. The food donations that are collected will be donated to the Long Lake Food Pantry while the clothing donations that are collected will be first donated to a thrift store located in the nurse's office at the school that's primary purpose is to offer students items that they may need. If there are items that the district does not need for our students they will be donated to local organizations that offer goods to community members.
