VIDEO: Blanche Sprentz Bears care about first responders
The student council held an assembly on Dec. 1 at Blanch Sprentz Elementary to honor first responders and show their appreciation.

The first responders honored were parents of students or school community resource officers. During the assembly, students thanked them for their service to the community and gave them a goodie bag and rose. The school choir also sang patriotic songs.

Some of the first responders shared with students what they do in their careers, inspiring students to consider careers in their fields. Firefighters, officers and paramedics were all honored.

Fourth and fifth-grade combination teacher Teri McHale and fifth-grade teacher Steve Callahan were instrumental in organizing and making this assembly happen.

Parents & community dig into school performance, safety plans
Folsom Cordova families, community members, and employees had the chance to explore and discuss school performance data last week. The same day, in a separate gathering, groups dug deeper into school safety plans and provided feedback on areas of improvement.

Both opportunities were part of the District's ongoing efforts to include its stakeholders in the decision-making process.

More than just a number: Understand how schools are doing
California has launched a new online resource that gives families and community members a better idea of how our public schools are performing. At Folsom Cordova, we want to make sure everyone who has a stake in the quality of our schools understands how to use this resource to make informed decisions.

Remember the Academic Performance Index, or API? The single number, based primarily on test scores, that for years we used to rate and rank public schools?  That's gone.

The new system, called the California School Dashboard, doesn't rely just on test scores to tell you how a school is doing. It also gives you detailed information on graduation rates, suspension rates, English learner progress, and more. Are schools that have challenges making changes to improve student success? Are historically high-performing schools improving outcomes for all students? The dashboard gives you much more information to help answer those questions.

Folsom High BRO program honored for tobacco prevention
The Sacramento County Tobacco Control Coalition recognized Folsom High's Bulldogs Reaching Out (BRO) at its 20th annual event for their efforts in tobacco use prevention among young people.

The event was held on Nov. 18. Eighteen BRO youth officers and three committed club advisors were honored for their leadership and commitment toward tobacco prevention.

BRO has nearly 160 club members, grades 9-12, who are trained as peer educators in tobacco, alcohol and other drug prevention. BRO members travel to FCUSD middle and elementary schools to educate students about the dangers of substance use.

SacRT Board votes to reduce K-12 monthly bus pass fare

The SacRT Board of Directors voted on Dec. 11 to reduce the price of the student monthly bus pass from $55 to $20, a 65% decrease in cost.

The fare reduction is part of a six-month pilot program to increase Sac RT's ridership, which is good news for our K-12 students who rely on public transportation. It's part of an Sac RT's Ridership Building Initiative.

"It's our hope that students in grades K-12 will adopt this mode of travel as they becoming adults, so providing them affordable transit access youth seems to be an excellent approach," said SacRT Board Chair Andy Morin.

The $20 student monthly pass and $10 semi-monthly student pass will go into effect on Jan. 1, 2018, and will remain in effect until June 30, 2018. Advance sales of the January monthly pass will begin on Dec. 20, at the reduced price.
