Lessons from the Holocaust
8th Grade Language Arts Students Given Opportunity...
Mrs. Angela McSurley's Eighth grade students just finished reading "The Diary of Anne Frank" and are beginning to learn about the Holocaust. To capture their interest, students had the opportunity on Friday, March 10, to listen to Mr. Felix Weil, a Dayton resident who escaped the  Holocaust on the Kindertransport when he was eleven. Unfortunately, Mr. Weil's sister and parents were not able to escape, and were killed in a concentration camp years later. Mr. Weil shared his experiences of facing discrimination for being Jewish in Nazi Germany. Mrs. McSurley commented  that, "students were deeply impacted by his first hand account, as evident by our class discussions that follo wed."

Several BIS eighth graders had the opportunity to write letters on behalf of their classmates, thanking Mr. Weil for sharing his experience. Because of this experience, students will have a unique connection when visiting the Holocaust Memorial Museum during their eighth grade class trip at the end of March. They will certainly visit the museum with a new authentic knowledge of the events from this era.

Students will continue to explore the propaganda and discrimination that leads up to the persecution of a group of people, sometimes resulting in genocide. Upon the return from Washington DC, both eighth grade language Arts classes will use a project based learning experience to further explore the Holocaust and how it remains relevant globally.  Mrs. McSurley gives specific thanks to Lisa Byrne for connecting her classes to Mr. Weil. This is a great example of when learning comes to life. You can view additional photos on our website here.

Shining a Light on Blue Devil Positives
While newscast and stories about what is happening in our society and schools typically reflect the negative, the last couple of weeks at Brookville Schools have held many positive experiences. Children, teachers and parents are involved in activities that are productive and promote our common goal of supporting children to reach their full potential. In this article we choose to see the many good things that are happening in our schools. Take a moment to read the thumbnail sketch of just a few of these activities.

NHS Students Sponsor Feed Brookville:
A cornerstone of the National Honor Society is service to others. On Saturday, March 4 the BHS Chapter of NHS gathered for this picture while preparing and serving food at Feed Brookville, a faith based Saturday lunch program for community residents hosted at the school district's administrative building. The students provided, helped to prepare and served the meal to families in need and elderly residents. The group is under the direction of high school teacher Mrs. Ross.

Literacy Night at BES:
Numerous groups that include the local preschools, Head Start, high school students, kindergarten teachers and other elementary staff came together under the direction of elementary principal Mrs. Hinds to hold the annual Literacy Night, Tuesday March 7. The theme was "Curious George". Students who will be entering kindergarten, head start and preschool units are invited on this special night. They enjoyed a pizza dinner and tons of fun activities around the joys of learning to read. Parents picked up some ideas on preparing their children to be ready for school next fall and the children spent time beginning to feel the joy of learning. You can watch a short video from one of the activities on our YouTube channel here.

Teacher Appreciation Dinner:
A variety of individuals who have mentored and taught students over the years were honored at a special banquet hosted by our National Honor Society. At this banquet, held March 8, all senior NHS members are invited to host a guest teacher or mentor who has been special in their life. Hearing the seniors speak specifically as to how these teachers have influenced them is truly one of the most uplifting evenings of the school year.

Boys Basketball Tourney Run:
Academic success in the classroom will always be our top priority. However, we recognize the benefits of participation in extracurricular activities. It is awesome when our student body comes together during the successful run of an athletic team. That was never more evident than during the fantastic tournament run of our 21-4 boys' basketball team. The day of the district final, March 9, students participated in a pep rally, our very own senior Monica Impson sang the National Anthem on the floor of UD Arena and the team, under head coach Jeff Davidson, represented us well in the last game of their record setting season. Kudos also to the community who showed up large and loud for every game!!

FFA Banquet and Awards :
March 11, was the Annual FFA Banquet and Awards Ceremony. Once again the many attributes of participation in a club or sport was on display. Leadership, teamwork and achievement were all front and center as our FFA students put on a tremendous program. Adviser, Mr. Nick Wright, had to be full of pride watching the members of his organization present themselves in stellar fashion. You can view a gallery of photos from the evening on our website here.

BHS Students Do Well in Writing Contest
Submissions to the Drug-Free Coalition are Winners
The Montgomery County Drug-Free Coalition recently announced winners of the 2017 Poster and Poetry Contest. The contest chairman was Montgomery County Sheriff Phil Plummer. Students were asked to submit either poems or posters that emphasized the Coalition's core mission of creating a drug-free society. All together well over 100 students from across Montgomery County submitted poetry and artwork.

In the Poetry Category for grades 9-12, Brookville High School had the first runner-up in Chelsey Shellabarger and the the second runner-up in Jasmine Ravenscraft. Both young ladies are sophomores in Mr. Robert Hope's English II class. The class discussed, studied and researched the given topic. Then, interested students began to work on their entries.

Chelsey and Jasmine both attended the awards presentation March 15 at the K12 Gallery & TEJAS in Dayton. Both received cash prizes for their winning work. We congratulate them and Mr. Hope for representing BHS so well. You can view their poems and the video of them reading the poems at the awards program on our YouTube channel here.

Get Your Groove On
1st and 2nd Graders Dance Their Way Into Each Day
First and second graders in Mrs. Chrissy Shore's room have added a little motivation to their mornings. Acting on a tip picked up on another teacher's social media site, Mrs. Shore introduced the idea of her students starting each day with a dance. Mrs. Shore said, "my class typically dances for about 5 minutes in the morning to get our day started off on a positive note. Once I saw the video, I knew that I had to incorporate this into our day." She went on to add that, "the kids love it and look forward to doing it every morning." The original song includes the school mascot which of course became the devils in Mrs. Shore's room.

For years we have seen manufacturing plants and retail stores who start their employees day with a brief exercise routine. Our own elementary has used Action Based Learning to incorporate movement into learning. This is a great way to get the blood flowing as a start to a good day. Beyond all of that, who can argue that as seen in this video Mrs. Shore has a really cute group of dancers!!
