PRIDE IN PACIFICA

Pacifica High School administrators, civics teachers, and students were thrilled to provide a Mariner’s welcome to Chief Justice Tani Cantil-Sakauye last week for a special ceremony to celebrate the school earning the prestigious Civic Learning Award of Excellence.

Before the ceremony began, Pacifica students hosted a Civics Showcase to highlight their work in areas like political action, non-profit community service, poll working, and close reading which allows students to separate facts from fake news.

During the ceremony, local leaders congratulated Pacifica High School on this exceptional accomplishment.  Pacifica High School senior Megan McCall, who won the American Soapbox Challenge earlier this year, gave inspiring remarks about the importance of civic education and the difference it has made in her life.

Hard Work Pays Off
Los Amigos High School student Daniel Felipe’s exceptional work at the CVS Store in Santa Ana earned him special recognition last week. Daniel was named the 2017 CVS Student Award of Excellence winner in GGUSD's WorkAbility I Program which provides vocational skills for students with special needs.  During a special ceremony held at CVS, Store Manager Travis Galvan praised Daniel's work and said he looks forward to offering him a full-time job. CVS Workforce Initiatives Manager Lisa Dowd presented Daniel with a $200 scholarship.

SHOES!

Every foot was measured and all 633 students at Carrillo Elementary School received a pair of new shoes and new socks last week. The non-profit organization, Shoes That Fit received donations from DaVita Dialysis and their staff helped distribute and tie shoes.   The students loved their new shoes.  GGUSD is so grateful for our generous partners and all they do to support students in need.
Lights, Cameras, Action

Hill Elementary School students wowed audience members with the school's production of Cinderella last week.

The production was part of the district's partnership with Segerstrom Center for the Arts and Disney Musicals in Schools.

The grant-funded programs gives students at 5 GGUSD elementary schools experience with the arts and allows them to recreate the magic of Disney.
A Special Recognition!

Congrats to McGarvin Intermediate School student Karen Nguyen on her winning essay about how being bilingual makes dreams come true.

She was honored at the CABE Seal of Excellence dinner recently and took a photo with her principal Tahnee Phan and keynote speaker Donovan Livingston, a Harvard graduate, educator, author and poet.

Karen has plans to pursue a profession as a veterinarian and would like to become trilingual.  Already she speaks English and Vietnamese and she plans to learn Korean.
