18th Annual Arts & Culture Awards
We are thrilled to announce the winners of our Arts & Culture Awards, which culminate in a luncheon on March 28th, 11am, at the DoubleTree hotel to honor them.
Of the winners, our Executive Director Tom Bensen said, "These outstanding individuals and organizations each represent a lifetime of dedication to the arts, and all have helped to make Missoula an exceptional place to work and live."

Chuck Florence / Individual Artist - Given to an artist who has shown exceptional achievement in music, visual art, dance, film/video, theater, performance art, choreography or music composition.
Steve Glueckert / Individual Cultural Achievement - Given to an individual or couple who have furthered the cause of the arts in general through volunteer, administrative, philanthropic, professional or legislative efforts.
Karen Callen / Arts Educator - Given to a dedicated educator (K-University level) who has devoted a career to teaching the arts in an educational environment.
Missoula Downtown Partnership / Business Support for the Arts - Given to a business that has provided long-term support to Missoula arts and cultural organizations
The Roxy Theater / Cultural Vision - Given to an organization, group or individual who has developed a special project or program that demonstrates unique cultural or artistic vision. |

Visiting Artist Lecture with Molly Murphy-Adams // Missoula Art Museum Tue., Mar. 7, 7pm / Website → Matrix Press artist-in-residence, Molly Murphy-Adams, will give this public lecture, her voice ringing true in her combination of traditional needlework and interests in contemporary art, politics, and cultural identity. Murphy-Adams received her BFA from the University of Montana in 2004.

Eritrea: the Country, Culture, and Circumstance // University Center Theater Wed., Mar. 8, 6pm / Website → Soft Landing Missoula brings you the third lecture in their series. Two speakers will be presenting, Dr. Kimberly A. Maynard and Dr. Solomon M. Gofie. Maynard's journey has taken her from smoke jumping in Missoula to work in natural disasters and, ultimately, war zones. Gofie is Assistant Professor at Addis Ababa University in Ethiopia, and his areas of research include state, society and human rights, conflict resolution, and more.

Cuarteto Canta Brasil // The Loft Mar. 10, 7:30pm / Website → The March Loft will feature Cuarteto Brasil, which is part of the seven-person Canta Brasil, delighting in performing Musica Popular Brasileira. Music will include samba, bossa nova, choro, and more. Members are well-known local musicians with other local groups like Big Sky Mudflaps and Salsa Loca. |

Over the River and Through the Woods // Missoula Community Theatre Mar. 8 - 19 / Website → Family comedy dished up with a side of lasagna, ravioli, and love: this describes Over the River and Through the Woods. The MCT is tickled to serve this delicious non-musical production. The rehearsal process for this show has been as hilarious as the script itself.

Five newly written 15-minute plays by local writers will be given a staged reading using local directors and actors. Professor Chaudhari on Jadavpur University, Calcutta, India, will present his lecture, "The Wood and the World: Negotiating A Midsummer Night's Dream." Chaudhari is an eminent Renaissance scholar, author of many books, including
Infirm Glory: Shakespeare and the Renaissance Image of Man. The 1999 film version of
A Midsummer Night's Dream will be screened on Monday, March 6th, same venue, at 6pm.

Jaune Quick-to-See Smith: In the Footsteps of My Ancestors // Yellowstone Art Museum, Billings
This major exhibition by Jaune Quick-to-See Smith will be on view through July 16, and will travel subsequently to Missoula and Colorado Springs. Smith is one of the US's finest Indigenous talents, and this will be the first solo exhibition of the artist's work in her native state of Montana in a generation. This exhibition will examine themes that perennially recur in her work, including conflict, compassion, peace, the cycle of life, irony, and identity.
