Cannabis Survey Results
Community Meeting: Covent Hotel
Free Flu Shots
Ward Night: October 7
Dear Neighbors,

More than a 1100 people answered our community survey on recreational cannabis sales. 44% of respondents supported recreational cannabis dispensaries in our ward under current state law. Another 27% supported dispensaries with additional restrictions on hours of operation, and 32% want dispensaries placed away from other buffers like parks. 25% strongly oppose and 11% somewhat oppose cannabis sales.

50% favor advertising and signage restrictions, and 36% support restrictions on the design of stores.

Sentiment for the location of retailers is very split, with 39% of respondents stating dispensaries could be located anywhere. Lincoln Avenue, the Armitage-Halsted shopping district, Halsted Street north of Fullerton, Clark Street and Division Street all received some support, with no one area receiving more than 22% support.

Question: According to Illinois State regulations, Recreational Marijuana Dispensaries in Illinois A) Can operate between 6 AM and 10 PM B) Must maintain extensive security and video surveillance equipment C) Must be located further than 1500 feet from another dispensary and at least 500 feet from a school D) Must verify the age of the purchaser.

Do you think these limitations are sufficient, or do you think there should be restrictions on the hours of operation, or on the locations of dispensaries?
Next Steps

The sentiments expressed in the survey will guide our office's actions as we consider any application for cannabis retailers in our ward.

As discussed in our last newsletter , a "special use" will likely be required. Based on the survey, our view will be that if a responsible applicant seeks such a special use, our support would be conditioned on a plan of operation that restricts hours of operation, limits advertising and signage, and requires store design to be discreet. Moreover, our community may seek further limitations on the location of dispensaries which will be determined through our community process. We must also consider the views of minority of residents opposed to cannabis sales.

The proposed zoning law concerning cannabis will be coming for a hearing before the Zoning Committee Monday. October 15 at 2:00 p.m. at City Hall. Thank you for participating in our survey.
Community Meeting:  Covent Hotel 2653 N. Clark
TONIGHT
6:30 p.m. - 7:30 p.m.
Alcott Elementary - Auditorium
2625 N. Orchard St.

Please join my office and the Park West Community Association (PWCA) at a community meeting to discuss the proposed redevelopment of the Covent Hotel, located at 2653 North Clark Street.

The proposal calls for the renovation of the historic single room occupany (SRO) hotel into affordable, handicap-accessible apartments with private bathrooms and kitchens, new community spaces, and amenities for current and future residents. The redevelopment will reduce the number of units from 60 to 30 in the existing structure and provde 4,900 square feet of renovated ground level retail. The plan also calls for the construction of a new seven-story building on the rear parking lot with market-rate units and 52 parking spaces, plus changes to Lehman Court to improve the streetscape.

The development team and its representatives will be present at this meeting to provide an overview of the project, as well as to answer questions. My office will be present to monitor the discuss, take notes and record your feedback. Here is the  meeting notice.
Free Flu Shots at the 43rd Ward Office
Monday, October 7

43rd Ward Office
2523 N. Halsted Ave.

The Department of Public Health will be on-site at our ward office to administer flu shots free of charge.

The Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) is urging everyone six months and older to get a flu shot as soon as possible. Due to concerns about how well the nasal spray vaccine has worked during the previous flu season, the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) is temporarily recommending that people get a flu shot and not use the nasal spray vaccine. If you have any questions regarding the event, please contact McKay Murphy at my office, McKay@ward43.org .

As flu season approaches, IDPH recommends following the 3 C’s: clean, cover, and contain:

Clean – frequently wash your hands with soap and warm water.
Cover – cover your cough and sneeze.
Contain – contain your germs by staying home.
