California Workforce Association Annual Workcon Conference.

The National Association of Workforce Development Professionals  (NAWDP) annual conference is the biggest gathering of
f ront line and management workforce development professionals in the country. Over the years, I have done more training for NAWDP than any other trainer. This year I will be presenting a special preconference workshop titled   The Captain and Coach Approach to Case Management. The traditional approaches to case management for youth and adults are outdated and do not empower job seekers to case manage themselves. This innovative new way to do case management puts the job seeker in the role of the captain of their job search progress team with the staff person in the guiding role of a coach. If you want to achieve better outcomes in less time, do not miss this workshop. To register for the conference go to   www.nawdp.org . If you are interested in bringing this training to your program,   click here for a description of the all day workshop

DO YOU COMMIT MICROAGGRESSIONS WHEN
 YOU WORK WITH PEOPLE?

Microaggressions - those subtle messages that demean, insult and invalidate a person - are routine occurrences for many diverse groups. Harvard University psychiatrist Chester M. Pierce coined the term microaggression in his 1970s study of racism in the media. Derald Wing Sue and David Sue extended the definition, adding brief, everyday exchanges that send denigrating messages to a target group.
Microaggressions can be communicated verbally or nonverbally, intentionally or unintentionally. Because the counseling relationship is a snapshot of our racial realities, microaggressions can also occur within the counseling relationship.  Even the most well intentioned workforce development professional can commit microaggressions.  I know because I have done it and if I am not vigilant, it is something I can do again.  If you want to learn more about microaggressions and how to avoid doing them click here.

WHAT ARE THE BEST PRACTICES FOR JOB SEEKERS
TO TALK ABOUT THEMSELVES IN AN INTERVIEW?

Read just about any article about job searching and you will probably get fairly clear instructions to toot your horn, show 'em what you are made of, or make it very easy for the hiring manager to quickly understand your capabilities and value.  "Knock 'em dead!" these articles will shout. "Be your own marketer!" Yes, of course.  But, it is not hard to take this advice too far, especially if you are nervous or really, super need that job. Where, then, is that fine line between "horn tooter" and "cocky son-of-a-gun?" And, more importantly, how can you ensure that you stay on the right side of that line in your next job search?  Click here for four things you and your job seekers need to know about talking about themselves.

WHAT CAN DISABILITY EMPLOYMENT PROGRAMS DO
TO BE MORE EFFECTIVE HELPING PEOPLE GET JOBS?

I wrote this article for a publication called the Job Training and Placement Reporter.  Unfortunately that newsletter is no longer being published.  I did an analysis of why disability employment programs are not as successful as possible helping people with disabilities get jobs and what they can do to overcome this problem.  The perspectives in the article come from my forty-five years of training and consulting experience with disability employment programs and private sector businesses.  Because I am in both of those worlds and because I am a person with multiple severe disabilities, I am in a position to see how disability employment programs can close the gap with their work with the private sector.

IS SELF-DEFEATING SELF-TALK HURTING YOU AND
YOUR JOB SEEKERS?

The biggest barrier to employment can be the thoughts that people have about themselves.  The internal conversations we have with ourselves, called self-talk, can go on for days, and sometimes through our nights as well.  Many of us know how vicious that inner critic can be. Often, we are harder on ourselves than we are on others. It is not because we want to be, it is because we do not know how to manage our negative self-talk.  Energy follows attention-wherever your attention is focused, your energy will follow. If your inner critic is beating you up about a failure, your failing will be the one thing you focus on.  However, there are ways you can harness the power of self-talk so it can help you. Here are 8 ways you can make self-talk the most powerful hack in the world.  Click here for the article.

WHAT ARE THE 8 TRAITS THAT WILL GET PEOPLE
FURTHER ALONG IN THE WORLD OF WORK THAN A HIGH IQ?

Fun fact for the day: 85% of financial success is attributed to good people skills. That means that getting promoted or making a big sale has little to do with  how smart you are, how high your grades were in school, or even how many trivia nights you've won.  And the best part is that being personable is something that can be  learned and developed, while IQ is something you are, well, born with. So there is basically nothing holding you back from moving up!  Want to know which personality traits can make you and your job seekers successful? Check out this infographic to find out.

WHAT ADVICE DO YOU GIVE TO PEOPLE
WHEN THEIR BOSS DISLIKES THEIR WORK?

Does your workforce program help people learn how to deal with conflicts with bosses?  Very few programs address this critical issue.  This article provides some very helpful strategies for dealing with bosses that do not like the work people are putting out.  This will not only be helpful to job seekers, but it may be very helpful to you as well!  Click here for the article.
