Hunting season is almost here. Are your green fields ready? Here's a checklist of basic steps and tips to make sure your fields ready for opening day.

1) Getting a soil test done is the most important step in determining the amount of lime and fertilizer needed to balance the soil and provide optimum growing conditions. The soil's pH level should be between 6.5 and 7 before you begin planting. Soil testing can be done through the Alabama Cooperative Extension Service at Auburn University.

2) Next, kill off any weeds with a solution that contains 1-2% glyphosate. Leave the herbicide on for about 10 days. Then burn or mow the area before plowing to decrease weed regermination. This step will help new plantings flourish.

3) Disc-up the plot to bury existing plant growth and ready the soil for new fertilizer.

4) According to soil test results, apply lime to lower acidic levels. This process makes soil more stable and able to support a good crop. Lime granules are typically used six months to one year before hunting season. Any application applied later--after August--should be in the form of lime pellets, since they are absorbed more quickly.

5) Fertilizer should then be applied to help plantings develop a strong root system. A good fertilizer encourages a healthy and abundant crop.

6) It's time to plant. Planting typically begins after Labor Day through mid-month in Alabama when temperatures are somewhat cooler. Use a mixture of about 70% perennials and 30% annuals, including grains, wheat and clover. Perennial clover is a good choice, since it grows in abundance and provides protein. Seeds can be broadcast by hand or with a good spreader.

7) If grass begins taking over the clover, spray fields with a grass herbicide. Mow clover fields if they get too high.

8) Finally, follow the farmer's rule in rotating crops each year to ensure a successful crop.

Following these steps will help your deer fields yield a healthy harvest and keep you from wasting time and money. For more info on equipment and implements that can help you get the most out of your deer fields, come see us at Cahaba Tractor.

Now is a good time to take inventory of your equipment. Is your current machinery in good working condition? What about implements? Do you need additional equipment? Not sure what you need? Come see us and we'll help you make the right choice at the right price.

Sincerely,

       Good Mornin' Kiss
A farmer and his wife were awakened one morning by the crowing of their rooster.

While still in bed, the farmer's wife said, "Pa, you know our neighbor, Mr. Jones?"

"Yes, Ma, I reckon I do," replied the sleepy farmer.

"Well, every mornin' before he leaves for work, he gives his wife a big ol' kiss. Why don't you ever do that?"

The farmer sighed and said, "Well, I reckon I can, but I just don't know Mrs. Jones very well."
