Spotlight: Spanish Program

One of our primary approaches to engaging our students in our Spanish language instruction is through the use of Teaching Proficiency through Reading and Storytelling (TPRS), which is a best-practice methodology that emphasizes language acquisition through oral storytelling and active response from learners while providing comprehensible input. Students quickly become engaged in the process of story creation listening to and speaking en español. Click here to read more and watch the videos!

Essay-Palooza: Fourth and Fifth graders celebrated last Friday the publishing of their essays!
Students showcased their essays in a variety of ways, including soapbox presentations, a listening station with pre-recorded podcasts and a gallery display of vision boards.

Wildlife Associates' Creepy Critters visited our school!
This event was a special thank you to all fifth-grade students and families who helped with the Harvest Party set-up back in September. Wildlife Associates was very appreciative and brought us their fantastic Creepy Critter assembly: a boa constrictor, a tortoise, an alligator, a tarantula and a monitor lizard!

Valentine's Learning Buddies: Love cards for our senior neighbors!
Last Friday, we gathered as a K-8 community to listen to the story
Somebody Loves You, Mr. Hatch by Eileen Spinelli. In response to the story,
students worked with their Learning Buddies to write notes of kindness and love to our neighboring senior community at Half Moon Village.

Today,
Mrs. Guevara's class hand delivered our notes and a special gift as ambassadors for Sea Crest. The third-grade will continue to connect throughout the remainder of the year with a group of seniors from Half Moon Village for intergenerational activities.

In the News: Sweethearts go dancing. Father-daughter dances take on more inclusive flavor.

“When I was first presented the idea of a father-daughter dance, my challenge was, let’s not make it a father-daughter dance, because that’s sort of limiting. So that’s how the dance turned to ‘sweetheart,’” said Director of Lower School Michelle Giacotto. “That was what we were trying to do, to have the tradition of a father-daughter dance that many parents remember when they were kids, but make it more inclusive.”

Alumni News: Congratulations to Zoe Grisim (class of 2016) who was ranked #1 out of 105 students in the freshman class at Mercy High School in the first semester with a 4.57 weighted GPA! She was also selected, from applicants around the world, to attend a week long dance intensive in London, England this March and was given a scholarship for it.
We are very proud of her!

You are invited! Research shows that media multitasking while studying and learning can have a negative impact on our kids' academic performance. But, learning to work around disruptions (Study...Facebook! Read...Tweet! Homework... selfie!) will be an important skill for their entire lives. What's a parent to do? What are realistic expectations and supportive limits for kids of all ages?
Join us for a guided discussion led by Sea Crest's own Laurie Schoeffler, a former teacher and intervention specialist who has worked with many families to support their children's learning in home and school settings.

Parent Volunteers:
We still need volunteers to assist behind the scenes with the show. We encourage parents to volunteer to help supervise backstage on the evening that you are not in the audience. Volunteers are also needed to help strike the stage and clean-up following the performance on Friday night. This is a great opportunity to earn some valuable Honorable Hours. Each year, the musical relies on the strength of volunteers.

- K-2nd Grade Whimsical Animals: A brightly colored shirt and pants or dress and leggings with a contrasting brightly colored pair of sneakers (Converse, Vans, etc.)
- 3rd-5th Grade Whos from Whoville: A Brightly colored stripe shirt and solid color pants or brightly striped dress and solid color leggings with a contrasting brightly colored pair of sneakers (Converse, Vans, etc.)
Children may choose which color to wear but
please avoid neutral colors, such as black, brown, gray, white or tan. Other costume items will be provided by the school.
