Kindergarten Connections

Dear Families,
Happy St. Patrick's Day Eve! By now you've probably heard stories at home. The children are convinced that there are leprechauns on the loose, and they've excitedly taken to searching for them during recess time. Leprechauns are also convenient scapegoats for minor incidents in the classroom. Lost a pencil? Leprechaun. Shoe untied? Leprechaun. We've thoroughtly enjoyed the excitement that's filled our classrooms. This afternoon the children presented their leprechaun traps, and excitedly set them up around the room. Tomorrow we'll see if we caught any leprechauns. We'll also use this opportunity to talk about how it feels to clean up a mess that's not yours, and how when we all work together, we can accomplish a whole lot. We're looking forward to celebrating together tomorrow.

What We Have Been Learning
|

|
Friendship Workshop
What can you do if you have a problem with a friend? In Friendship Workshop we began practicing using "I Messages" to help with conflict resolution.
|
|
Quiet Time
We're classrooms full of weavers! We've learned to weave, as an option for quiet time. This activity has proven to be fun, calming, and great fine-motor work.
|
|
|
Math
We've begun using cuisenaire rods as we explore value and number relationships. Cuisenaire rods come in 10 lengths, with a color assigned to each one. The lengths match the value of each rod. We will use them to play and explore, and also solve problems.
|
|
Writer's Workshop
We've begun using a new tool during Writer's Workshop - mini dictionaries! Students can ask a teacher to find up to two words per day in their student dictionary, which helps to lessen the work load of putting ideas on paper.
|
|
Talking with your child is the best way to support classroom learning. The following questions can help you get started.

Tomorrow's exciting St. Patrick's Day events - What happened? How did it feel to clean up a mess that wasn't yours?
- Tomorrow's potato math - How did you do math with a potato?
- Last week's musical performances - How did it feel to get up on stage?
- Next week's parent-teacher conferences - Is there anything you'd like me to ask your teachers about?

Tomorrow: Parent Education Workshop

Distraction, Multi-Tasking and Time Management,
Friday, March 17th, 8:30 - 9:30 a.m., Think Tank. Research shows that media multitasking while studying and learning can have a negative impact on our children's academic performance. Speaker Laurie Schoeffler, Student Support Coordinator, will provide tools to work around media disruption.

- Our school day begins at 8:15 am. Please do everything you can to ensure your child arrives to school at or before this time. Arriving on time allows your child to ease in to the day gracefully, and helps us all make the most of our day. Here are some tips to help. Here are some more tips!
- Dismissal will be at noon for the entire school on Thursday, March 23rd. This can be a challenging time for Kindergarteners who are not accustomed to departing within a crowd. If you'd like to pick up your child early, please come directly to our classroom as early as 11:45.
- Kindergarten Parent Education Survey. We are interested in hearing from every parent, whether you participated in the workshop series or not. Your feedback will help us improve the events for next year. Please take a few moments to complete the survey.

Our Extended Day Program (EDP) will be open:
- Minimum (Noon Dismissal) Day, Thursday, March 23rd, from 12:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Theme: Go Fly A Kite! Cost: $11.00 per hour.
- Conference Day, Friday, March 24th, from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.Theme: Let’s Go Ride! Bikes & Scooters (Helmets required). Cost: $11.00 per hour.
