What We Have Been Learning
|
|
Social Studies
We are slowly coming to the end of early colonial times and becoming 13 separate colonies. As we move through time, we will start to revolt against the king and his ways, launching the American Revolution!
Stay tuned...
|
Writer's Workshop
Students are starting to learn some unsettling facts as they start researching their second essay, "Do Something". Although this can be very sad and upsetting for some, they are passionate and driven to make a change in the world. We will be learning how to take notes and site sources accurately. We can't wait for you to see what they can do!
|
Reader's Workshop
Students have been using close reading to help them comprehend and break down the information they read. When using articles about colonial times and reading articles on the web for their essay, students are able to read a text multiple times to retain the information they need.
After Spring Break, students will start their partner reading!

Scratch Coding
Fifth grade students have been working with Mrs. Kohrs coding Math games with
Scratch
since mid-December. Take a look at some of the Math Games they have created by visiting these studios:

Math
If Justin buys 15 apples and shares them with 3 of his friends, how many apples does each of the 4 kids receive?
- We're understanding fractions as division (see problem above).
- We're taking apart mixed numbers 4 3/4 = 3 + 4/4 + 3/4 to prepare for subtracting mixed numbers.
Science
Despite the threat of rain and long marches across the dunes, we thoroughly enjoyed our day with the seals. We can't wait to see the individual projects they create from the common experience.
We're wrapping up chemistry by exploring chemical changes. The best known example is an explosion, but other evidence that molecules are rearranging themselves includes: temperature change, color change, gas bubbles, and producing a new substance.
Puberty is on the horizon. Puberty education will focus on:
- Changes in the male and female reproductive systems,
- External physical and emotional changes,
- Health habits,
- Respecting peers as they enter puberty at different times.
|
|
Talking with your child is the best way to support classroom learning. The following questions can help you get started.
- How is gas evidence of a chemical reaction?
- Ask your child to help you the next time you're dividing up something for the family. You order 2 pizzas for 5 people. How much does each person get?
- What is "close reading"? Can you demonstrate for me?.
- Can you fill me in on your colony? How much food do you have? Has anything traic happened?
- Tell me about your essay 2. Who or what are you writing too?
Your child should be reading for 30 minutes each day!
