Fourth Grade Connections
March 2nd, 2017
|
|
Dear Fourth
Grade Families,
We hope you enjoyed last week’s break and were able to spend time out of the office, with your kids, or with your friends for a few days. The next few weeks ahead will be bringing much excitement to the fourth grade. This Friday, March 3rd, we will be headed to San Francisco’s Chinatown and returning at the end of the school day enlight of our immigration unit of study.
Next week, March 6-10th, brings about Sea Crest’s annual musical. Everyone will be participating in the performance on Thursday or Friday depending which group (A or B) your child is in. Last but not least, trimester two will be ending on March 10th with Student-led Conferences on the March 23rd and 24th. We are all excited for the month ahead as we head into our last trimester of fourth grade.
We look forward to seeing you at the upcoming end of second-trimester conferences on March 23rd and 24th. Please follow the link below to sign up.

Your Fourth

What We Have Been Learning
|
|
Writing
We are onto our second round of essay writing! This time we are choosing important social/global issues to research. These essays will eventually become letters or Public Service Announcements persuading various organizations and public figures to make change!
|
Science
We are beginning to research different types of whales, looking at their different structures/adaptations and their functions.
|
|
Math
We have been diving into division over the last few weeks, determining the unit cost of items, how many five person teams can be made from 288 students, and playing games to help with determining remainders.
|
Social Studies
Our second case study about immigration is called "the Chinese Experience." We are exploring Angel Island in class and will visit Chinatown this Friday to meet with William Tran of the Chinese Historical Society. The goal of this study is to explore immigrant experiences and to recognize that we are a state (and country) of immigrants.
We are looking for volunteers to come in and share their family immigration stories over the next few weeks. If you are interested, please email Ms. D!

Costume Requirements: The fourth grade students are cast as the whimsical
Whos from Whoville. Your child is asked to wear a
brightly colored stripe shirt and solid color pants or
brightly striped dress and solid color leggings with
a contrasting brightly colored pair of sneakers (Converse, Vans, etc.) on the evening of the performance.
Children may choose which color to wear but
please avoid neutral colors, such as black, brown, gray, white or tan. Other costume items will be provided by the school.

|
Musical Performances: Thursday, March 9th - Friday, March 10th, 7:00 p.m. - 8:30 p.m., Kohrs Family Center. Fourth grade performers should arrive at the Theatre by 6:15 p.m.
Volunteers Needed: We are currently looking for volunteers to help break down the stage after Friday night's performance. If you are available, please contact
Michelle Giacotto. We would greatly appreciate it!

Talking with your child is the best way to support classroom learning. The following questions can help you get started.
- What are the two types of Whales? What do you think about the humpback whale's singing?
- What was the Angel Island Immigration Station?
- What issue are you focusing on for your research essay?
