A Note From Your Second Grade Teachers
Second Grade Connections
March 2nd, 2017
Dear Second  Grade  Families,

Welcome back! We hope you enjoyed your week long break with family and friends. We are excited to get back into our World Discovery Unit by learning about different cultures. Each student completed a map of China before Break. Now we will focus on the Lunar New Year as a traditional holiday celebrated throughout the continent of Asia. We held a Valentine's Day Celebration with a card exchange and sweet treats. Thank you to our Room Moms for providing the nut-free treats.

During Math Time we celebrated the hundredth day of school by creating collections of 100 objects and doing other activities related to 100. We are also regrouping (borrowing & carrying) when adding and subtracting three digit numbers. We have introduced bar models as tools to compare numbers when solving problems.

Reading circles, journal writing and learning the different patterns for spelling long vowel words through word studies and word sorts keeps us busy during our Language Arts time. This week we have focused on long 'ee' and 'ea' words.

We continue to write friendly letters to our Super Star on a weekly basis. This is a fun and special way to honor each class member's uniqueness. Our most recent Super Stars have been June, Sam H., Kelsey, and Madeleine. It is a joy to have the Super Stars share more about themselves and so enjoyable for students to appreciate them through letter writing.

We look forward to seeing you at the upcoming end of second-trimester conferences on  March 23rd and 24th . Please follow the link below to sign up.
Warmly,

Your Second  Grade  Team
Debra Christian, Rosalie Simrock, Vienna Klingele & Sherri Trigueiro

What We Have Been Up To...
Musical Reminders
Costume Requirements: The second grade students are cast as  whimsical animals. Your child is asked to wear a  brightly colored shirt and pants or dress and leggings with  a contrasting brightly colored pair of sneakers (Converse, Vans, etc.) on the evening of the performance.

Children may choose which color to wear but  please avoid neutral colors, such as black, brown, gray, white or tan. Other costume items will be provided by the school.
Musical Performances: Thursday, March 9th - Friday, March 10th, 7:00 p.m. - 8:30 p.m., Kohrs Family Center.  Second-grade  performers should arrive at the Theatre by 6:30 p.m.

Volunteers Needed:  We are currently looking for volunteers to help break down the stage after  Friday  night's performance. If you are available, please contact  Michelle Giacotto. We would greatly appreciate it!
Ask Your Child...

Talking with your child is the best way to support classroom learning. The following questions can help you get started.

  • How many ways can you make 100?
  • What animal are you in the Lunar Calendar?
  • What is something you learned about this week's Super Star?

Nut-Free Classroom
As a reminder, we have children in Ms. Christian's class with severe nut allergies. In an effort to be safe and as inclusive as possible, please send nut free snacks to school. If you are bringing any snacks to share with the class or grade level, please give advanced notice so that we can provide an alternative snack. We will need to provide an alternative unless the food brought in is prepackaged and labeled. Thank you for helping to keep everyone safe and healthy in second grade.
