He walked through the office entrance with a grin on his face, approached my desk, and reached out his hand to introduce himself.  It was the early days of Holy Land Stone, and having moved the company from a table in our family room/workshop in our garage, we were in need of a stonecutter.  We didn't need a fulltime employee, but someone to step in for my brother-in-law Michael when he couldn't work in the evenings after his fulltime job.
We didn't advertise for the position, but had spread the word throughout the community that we were looking for a part-time stonecutter.  Thus when Israel Castro introduced himself, I couldn't help but grin myself...both in response to his pleasant demeanor, but most of all at the irony of his name.  Yes, God has a sense of humor, and bringing "Izzy" to the Stone Company was one of the first of many clear indicators He was not only an active participant, but actually in control of our company.
God also knew Izzy and Holy Land Stone were a good fit.  Again when we really didn't need, or most specifically couldn't afford, a fulltime employee, Izzy was there.  He would randomly show up when we needed him and disappear for days at a time when we didn't need him. He was the perfect solution to our need.
Oftentimes we go through life on automatic responding to the people and events in our life from our individual perspective...unaware God is in the midst of it all.  However from the very early days of the Stone Company God's presence became so very clear to me that I couldn't help but notice.  In fact, it was through my recognition of his presence I began to seek and rely upon his constant guidance.
A few years later as I interviewed a rather disheveled, yet articulate young man, he enthusiastically expressed his desire to work as he described his background experience and skills.  As I told him the story of the company, explained the manufacturing work available, and told him he wouldn't be working for me but for God, his eyes brightened with eagerness and expectation.  I soon learned after James began working with us his only form of transportation was a bicycle.  He rode it to work 12-15 miles each way every day never complaining yet working tirelessly and diligently each day.  I didn't realize until a few weeks after I had hired him how desperately he needed the job.  In fact, he later revealed to me he was ready to give up the day we met...he didn't know if he could get through another day.  He had interviewed for job after job and believed we were his last chance.
Until we truly seek to know someone, we may never understand what they are going through.  James had effectively concealed his desperation. Had I judged him merely by his outward appearance and resume, I never would have discovered his true character and capabilities. He never would have been a part of the company history.  In fact we came to know him as a talented artist who was inspired by our mission.  He not only demonstrated a conscientious work ethic, but was determined to discover more efficient methods of manufacturing.   He was also a man of great faith.  In his desperation he had prayed for God to guide him. God heard his prayer and opened my eyes to see his potential.
"Faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we cannot see." Hebrews 11:1
If only for a season God brings us those we need...as well as those who need us.  There are times when we may not recognize it, but we are here to learn from them and here to heal each other. But we must be open.  When we are struggling ourselves trying to find our way, it is focusing upon and truly caring for the welfare and feelings of others that God makes his presence known to us through those same individuals.
Many seasons have passed since Izzy and James worked with us. Yet they remain a part of the Holy Land Stone family. In fact, I learned only a few days ago Izzy passed away on March 1. Another former employee Russ Sciurca passed away as well this month. They will always be a part of our extended family. For as we remember them, we are grateful and blessed by both of them and all those God has brought and will continue to bring our way.
