First Grade Connections
February 9th, 2017
|
|
Dear First Grade Families,
We are headed towards the culmination of our neighborhood study. This week former HMB planning commisioner Steve Flint joined the first grade classes to give them tips on city planning. The students learned about the different types of space in a city like residential, commercial, industrial, green space and mixed use space. As a group Steve led the students in a hands on activity where they mapped out a town according to his tips and advice. We will put all the wonderful knowledge to work beginning Monday and we can't wait to see you on Friday, February 17th at 8:30am for our ribbon cutting ceremony/academic celebration.
Sincerely,
Your First Grade Team
Stephanie Hanepen, Lesley Stevens and Vienna Klingele

What We Have Been Learning
|
|
Students have been busy writing and sending letters to destinations both in Sea Crest School and outside of school. We have been practicing writing with capitals and punctuation so that the recipients of our letters can read our messages. We have a classroom mailbox where we put our letters and the classroom mail carrier delivers.
|
Social Studies
The students have been diving into their own coastal community and learning about what makes living here unique. We compared our neighborhood to most neighborhoods and concluded that we are so lucky to have this much natural beauty surrounding us daily.
|
|
Science
In partnerships, the students made 'puffer machines' following the directions from a how to book. They then used their machines to test the properties of glass, metal, wood, plastic, fabric and paper. Before testing they learned how to conduct 'fair' tests.
|
Reading
The students are becoming decoding experts. Please continue to practice and have them name the decoding strategies they are using at home during nightly reading. So far we have covered:
- Fishy Lips/Get Your Lips Ready
- Eagle Eye/Look at the Picture
- Skippy the Frog/Skip the Word and Return
- Chunky Monkey/Split the Word into Known Chunks
- Little Words in Big Words/Look for the Little Words you Know
- Ask Yourself Does This Make Sense?
|
|
Talking with your child is the best way to support classroom learning. The following questions can help you get started.
- Discuss patterns: shapes, colors, size or all 3!
- What do these patterns look like: AB, ABC, AA BB CC?
- What decoding strategies can you use to figure out challenging words?
- What is a consonant blend? Give me an example? Let's brainstorm some words!
- What is a fair test?
- What are some rules and laws that keep our community safe?
- What do MOST neighborhoods have? What does OUR neighborhood have that makes it so special?
