Fourth Grade Connections

Dear Fourth
Grade Families,
The past two weeks have been eventful ones, in the world and in our classrooms. We wrapped up major studies in Writing and Science, grappled with the impact the Spanish had on California and how we can learn multiplication better by teaching it to others.
As elementary school teachers, we live to see the learning sparks fly. Famed educator, Smokey Daniels once said: “The world is handing us curriculum.” Indeed there is so much opportunity right now to practice the skills we introduce in class, like speaking up for what you believe in, supporting your opinions with evidence, considering perspectives different than your own, and approaching others with kindness and an open mind.
We wish you a happy early Valentine’s Day and a rejuvenating February Break.

What We Have Been Learning

Writing
We are gearing up for
Essay-palooza this Friday, a celebration of Fourth and Fifth Graders' essay writing. Students will choose how they want to get their voice out; spoken on a soapbox, recorded as a podcast, or displayed as a vision board.

Science
Programming and using animation in computer science class with Mrs. Kohrs.

Math
Working in partners and using manipulatives to divide.

Character Education
How can social intelligence help you solve a puzzle? We are investigating ways to show social intelligence and act cooperatively at school and in life.

K-8 Assembly & Learning Buddies

Essay-palooza!
Friday, February 10th, 9:00 - 11:45 a.m.
Come celebrate with the Fourth and Fifth graders the publishing of their essays! Students will showcase their essays in a variety of ways, including soapbox presentations, a listening station with pre-recorded podcasts, and a gallery display of vision boards.
ERB Testing

Fourth and Fifth Grade teachers will be administering the CTP-4 tests published by ERB next week from
Tuesday, February 14th through
Friday, February 17th.
To help balance testing across the four days and prevent student fatigue, teachers will administer two subtests each day. The fifth-grade testing window will be in the morning and
the fourth-grade testing window will be in the afternoon.
Testing windows are carefully designed to provide a physical activity break and time to eat between sub-tests. Due to the class time needed to administer tests, no make-up test sessions will be offered. Any missed sub-tests will simply be omitted from the final test report.
Sea Crest utilizes the CTP-4 tests as a diagnostic tool to analyze programmatic strengths and needs, guide instruction, measure long-term student growth, and provide your child with practice and experience in taking similar reasoning/achievement style tests (such as the ISEE and the SAT).
It is important to remember that this test represents only one way to measure student knowledge and ability. It should be viewed as only a small part of your child's broader academic profile.

How you can help your child prepare for testing:
- Ensure your child gets plenty of sleep each night.
- Ensure he or she eats a healthy, protein-rich breakfast, and pack a robust snack, and lunch to promote focus and stamina.
- Encourage your child to bring a bottle of water to testing.
- Avoid emotional conflicts before school by keeping the morning routine calm.
- Be encouraging, but avoid placing any unnecessary stress or pressure on your child. Teachers will be asking students to simply try and do their best, and we encourage families to do the same.
- Offer plenty of opportunities for your child to run, play, and decompress each evening.

The fourth grade students are cast as the whimsical
Whos from Whoville. Your child is asked to wear a
brightly colored stripe shirt and solid color pants or
brightly striped dress and solid color leggings with
a contrasting brightly colored pair of sneakers (Converse, Vans, etc.) on the evening of the performance.
Children may choose which color to wear but
please avoid neutral colors, such as black, brown, gray, white or tan. Other costume items will be provided by the school.
