Mr. McNeany's Letter

With one week to go until spring break everyone is anxiously looking ahead to a week of vacation, adults included.  We knew last year when we put the calendar together that March would be a long month.  Who would have thought we would have went from a near eighty degree president's day weekend to a cold and wintry March?

For some of you this week is the last spring break you have with your child before he/she heads to college.  I am not quite there yet with my children, but as I watch the years fly by I know it is right around the corner.  As parents we love our kids, and with love comes worry.  We pray that we have guided them down the right path to make healthy, faithful decisions when faced with temptation.

Each year as we approach spring break I start to worry and pray for the safety of our students.  Our culture has inundated teenagers with the idea that spring break is some sort of "right of passage" where they are to set aside all of their inhibitions and let loose.  Unfortunately, my generation contributed greatly to this image as I distinctly remember watching the MTV spring break beach parties in between the music videos (which us old people know the station used to actually show.)  There are so many dangers to this mentality, as evidenced by this tragic story from a popular spring break destination.

Rather than preach about the dangers of allowing high school students the opportunity to be unsupervised for a week, I simply want to encourage families to enjoy the time together.  As parents, being present with our kids is the best safety net.  Whether you are heading somewhere warm for the week or having a staycation, I hope you have the opportunity to be "in the moment" with your son or daughter.  You will make memories that will never be forgotten.

I pray that everyone has a safe and joyful spring break.

God Bless,
James McNeany
Principal

G C Names Matt Lane Director of Athletics

James McNeany, Principal of Guerin Catholic High School, announced to the faculty and staff earlier today that Matt Lane has been named the Director of Athletics for the Golden Eagles.

Lane has been Interim Director of Athletics for the past several months and has been with Guerin Catholic as a coach, teacher and assistant athletic director for the past six years.

Although Guerin Catholic received extensive interest from candidates throughout the state, McNeany noted that Lane's contributions were evident to many in the Guerin Catholic community.

"It became clear throughout the search process what an outstanding candidate we had in-house with Matt.  His body of work as an Interim Director has been impressive and noticed by many in our community.  I am confident that under Mr. Lane's leadership, our athletic department will continue to be a place where our students can live out the beliefs and ideals that we strive to teach every day at Guerin Catholic." said McNeany.

Congratulations Matt!

Freshmen Field Trip to the CANDLES Holocaust Museum and St. Mary of the Woods College

The English Department will be taking the entire freshmen class to the CANDLES Holocaust Museum in Terre Haute to listen to Holocaust Survivor Eva Mozes Kor (one of Dr. Mengele's twins who survived his infamous experiments) tell her story of survival and forgiveness. All freshmen read a memoir on the Holocaust during their second trimester of English, and we will believe this experience will be invaluable. We will also be spending additional time at St. Mary of the Woods College to learn more about St. Mother Theodore.

All students need to arrive at Guerin Catholic High School no later than 7:15 a.m. on Friday, April 28, 2017. Students need to bring their own lunch with them. We will return at approximately 4 pm later that day. Students will need to be in regular school uniform. (It is not a spirit wear day)

ftEvery freshmen must have a signed permission slip by Tuesday, April 18th which can be found on Gateway

If you would like to learn more about Eva Kor and her museum, here is the link to the CANDLES website where you can read her story of survival, education, and forgiveness. You can also read her twitter feed: @EvaMozesKor.
