Spring is in the air and with spring comes Major League Baseball.
This year, the Foundation is partnering with the Tampa Bay Rays
for SPC Night at the Trop. On April 5, SPC students, alumni, faculty, staff, donors, family and
friends will come together to cheer on the Rays as they take on the New York Yankees in the
season-opening series. Information on the Rays special ticketing price for this event is below.

SPC Men's Basketball Wins in First Round of National Championship

This month the Titan Men's Basketball team headed to the NJCAA 2017 National Tournament in Hutchinson,
Kansas for the first time in 15 years.
The Titans took Region VIII by storm in post season play and picked up an impressive 70-53 win over Highland Community College in the first round of the NJCAA tournament.
Sadly, the Titans saw their magical season come to an end in a close game against the No. 4 seed and hometown team Hutchinson College.
Led by sophomores Jason Burnell, Cezanne Carson, and Tristan Owens, and under the coaching prowess of Coach Ernest Crumbley, the Titans can be proud of their hard work and amazing season. Congratulations Titans!

Fifth Annual Keys to Manhood Seminar

Approximately, 200 local high school and college students, along with parents and mentors, attended the fifth annual Keys to Manhood Summit at SPC's Allstate Center in February.
Sponsored by Transamerica, the seminar included an impressive range of workshops focused on helping students succeed including, becoming financially fit, going from dropout to knockout, overcoming legal obstacles, and exploring career opportunities.

The highly interactive day included a luncheon sponsored by GTE Financial and a keynote address by NFL player, philanthropist and St. Petersburg native Louis Murphy, Jr. During his speech, Murphy touched on many of the challenges in his own life and encouraged attendees to persevere. "No matter where you are in life, don't let anyone or anything deter you from your dreams," he said.

SPC Honors Students Recognized

The 10th Annual Honors Program Collegiate Research Conference hosted 100+ students, faculty, staff, administrators and guests at the Seminole campus earlier this year. The event featured over 40 student presentations, covering topics such as Quantum Physics, Psychology, Politics, Science, Nutrition, Permaculture, Organ Transplants and Solar Energy. This year the SPC Honors Program sent 10 students on to the State Conference in Jacksonville and six students to the Southern Regional Honors Conference in Asheville, N.C., where SPC Honors student Brenna Garcia received a partial research scholarship to attend an Ivy League University upon graduation from SPC.

SPC Professor Dr. Monica Lara leads students through Lionfish dissection
|
SPC Foundation Innovation Grant recipient Dr. Monica Lara is dramatically expanding learning opportunities for her biology students by providing a broad range of research opportunities outside the classroom. During a recent project researching mangrove and seagrass environments, Dr. Lara's students honed critical thinking skills while collecting and recording data, problem solving, maintaining scientific equipment and designing research protocols. Through this process, they gained the experience and training that will prepare them for future jobs in laboratories, consulting companies, government agencies and teaching environments.
SPC's biology department is one of the few local undergraduate programs that is providing research opportunities for students. Thanks to the generous donors who support the Innovation Grant Initiative, students are able to study our local marine ecosystems while building practical skills that will prepare them for the workplace or graduate studies.

SPC Alum Starts Small Business
St. Petersburg College alumna Sheree Clark credits SPC for giving her the tools she needed to become a successful entrepreneur.
Armed with a Baccalaureate degree in Management and Organizational Leadership from SPC, Sheree launched
Words by Design LLC, a highly successful photographic art startup in 2014 and has not looked back.
Sheree said that the SPC faculty and the program's specific focus on entrepreneurship gave her the knowledge and the confidence to succeed. "I learned what it takes to start a business; the skills, the practices and policies to make it successful and become a leader in my community and in my life," Sheree said.
"I believe one of the most important skills I learned from SPC is that there's no single formula, but rather to think creatively and independently. Because of SPC, I'm now running my own company."
