Sunday, March 26

9:30 and 11:15 am. Worship service: Co-Resist. Rev. Parker. “The world is too broken to be healed by one pair of hands,” Rev. Rob Hardies has said. To “see, savor, and save” the world we must join hands with others. Aiming to “co-exist” in a religiously pluralistic world is a good goal, but more is needed. Now is the time for people of diverse faiths, cultures, and life circumstances to “co-resist” the forces of evil and injustice in our world. What does multi-faith, sacred activism offer and ask of us?

All Souls Church Council meeting. Lay leaders and all congregants are invited to participate in a meeting of all the church’s many ministries. Come learn what happens outside of Sunday worship. 9:00 am-1:00 pm, Pierce Hall.

An Actor's Perspective: Antigone. We will experience Sophocles’ Antigone as though we were actors in rehearsal. We’ll read Seamus Heaney’s contemporary adaptation, The Burial at Thebes, before gathering; then, that day, we’ll read selected scenes aloud, with frequent stops to explore relationships, motivation, and plot dynamics. In essence, the class will mirror the “table work” beloved by professional actors. Along the way, we’ll uncover some of the many surprises still to be found in a work more than two millennia old. Register here. 10am-3:30pm (with lunch break).

Weekend on the Bay 2017

Are you hoping to find a smaller community within our larger community or just need a couple of days to slow down? Do you love spring on the Chesapeake Bay, communing with nature and fellow All Souls goers? Do you wonder who the kids (or families of those kids) are that your kids hang out with on Sunday mornings? Do you wonder what Rob wears when he’s on vacation? Join us for Weekend on the Bay, June 2-4! We have lodging and activities that meet every interest and budget. Registration will open on April 9. Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA) General Assembly (GA)

The UUA’s annual GA (June 21-25) will be held in a city dear to this church’s collective heart: New Orleans. In addition to letting those of us who’ve served to help rebuild the city catch up with one another, this justice-focused GA will have opportunities for all to worship, witness, and serve with local partners.

We’ll also elect a woman president! All three candidates to head the UUA are women. You can read about them at www.uuworld.org/topics/uua-elections. and learn more about them at a candidates’ forum at Cedar Lane UU Church on Sat., Apr. 1. Find out more at www.uua.org/central-east/programs/better-together-central-east-region-leadership-day-and-uua-presidential.

GA dates to remember
March 1: Housing reservations open/registration open/financial aid applications available
March 31: Financial aid application deadline
May 1: Registration rates increase

All Souls, by virtue of our size, is allowed a large group of representatives. Some denominational funds are available for scholarships, but you must act early. Let All Souls’ Denominational Connections Chair Justis Tuia (justis_tuia@hotmail.com) know if you’re interested in being a representative. Even if you’ve already registered for GA, please let Justis know if you’re interested in being one of our official delegates.

Opportunities

Big Foot is coming! Earn your climate reduction stickers in the Big Carbon Footprint Game starting March 12. Make the carbon on the footprint disappear. See display in the church lobby for more information and come to the Big Foot table at coffee hour after church to take part. Sponsored by Green Souls.

The Souls Journey bulletin board needs your news! In our big congregation, it’s sometimes hard to know other congregants. The Souls Journey bulletin boards (in Pierce Hall corridor) have photos of new members, brand new souls, marrying souls, obituaries, and notice of milestone events in the lives of our congregation. Please send photos and accompanying text to lesterlaura@gmail.com, message line: “Souls Journey.”

Your Board of Trustees, Church Council, and Leadership Development and Nominating Committee need YOU to fill two critical openings for church officers: secretary and assistant secretary. The Secretary keeps minutes of the monthly Board of Trustees meetings, preserves the church’s historical records, and ensures the accessibility of church policies, among other tasks. The assistant secretary takes minutes of three Church Council meetings each year, organizes the semi-annual Find Your Ministry Fairs, attends Church Council planning meetings, supports the church moderator, and fills in for the Board secretary as needed. If you’re interested, please contact LDNC Chair Mary Topolinski (marytopolinski@gmail.com).

Caring Souls. Rev. Parker would like to thank those of you who’ve responded to her recent calls for volunteers. If you haven’t already signed to receive our emails of needs, but would like to become more involved in serving congregants of the church in times where a little extra support is welcome, see us in Pierce Hall after the service at the Caring Table or email Carrie Davidson (ASCU.CaringSouls@gmail.com).

Dementia caregivers’ covenant group meets first and third Wednesdays of the month at members’ homes. New members are welcome. Contact Kathy Ferger (dcstreet@rcn.com).

Valet parking for older church members. Sunday morning parking is difficult, especially for those who can’t walk many blocks to church. The city will not let us reserve spots close to the church, so the Caring Souls would like to arrange valet parking for members with impaired mobility. Meet a member at church and then park their car for them. Interested or need valet parking? Contact Caring Souls Coordinator Carrie Davidson (ASCU.CaringSouls@gmail.com).

The All Souls ESL program is growing! Thirty students from 16 countries attend our Sunday classes, and 21 are also connecting with volunteer tutors. Enrollment and classes continue Sundays from 1- 2:45pm at All Souls Church. New students welcome. Contact all.souls.esl.dc@gmail.com for more information.
