Principal's Notes

Dear Parents,

Tomorrow is the first day of spring and last Friday was the last day of the second trimester.  This year has flown by with only one trimester left.

Our 8th graders are getting ready to go to Washington D.C. and soon after they will graduate.  This 8th grade class has so far received over 100 acceptances to high school.  So far they are attending all of the local private ones including Alverno Heights Academy, Don Bosco Tech, Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy, Immaculate Heart High School, La Salle High School, Loyola High School, Mayfield Senior School, Maranatha High School, Ramona Secondary School, and St. Francis High School.

Only two weeks to go until the Red Tie Ball.  Don't miss out on this wonderful evening that is also the largest PTO fundraiser for the school.  We'll have a surprise guest at assembly on Monday.  Be sure to ask your child about this special guest.  See all information about the Red Tie Ball below.

Have a wonderful week,
Jennifer

SERVICE HOUR REQUIREMENTS

Please click for the Sign Up Genius.  Any hours over 2 will count as regular service hours. Don't forget you still need to enter all your hours worked online on the school website. Any questions? Please contact the volunteer coordinator, Treacy Casciani at SPauctionhours@gmail.com

FLUSH FUND
We are excited to announce this year's Fund-a-Project for the Red Tie Ball, the Flush Fund!
In 2017, St. Philip the Apostle School celebrates 90 years of excellence in Catholic education; however, half of our student population are using bathrooms from the original 1927 school (minor updates done over 25 years ago).

Our first through fourth grade students have been using smelly, outdated bathrooms and we need your help to provide all of our students with modern and clean bathroom facilities.  Just ask a lower grade student about their bathroom experiences. Their tales are long and animated!

Our goal is to raise $45,000 - $55,000 for this project (the school will match this amount to cover the estimated project cost of $90,000 - $110,000), which includes new sustainably minded drinking fountains for all grades in addition to the lower grade bathroom remodel. The new eco-friendly drinking fountains will reduce water waste and reduce the number of disposable water bottles used.

Please see the  attached flyer  for more information.

NEW TO YOU
As spring is just around the corner, I am hoping you will think of me and get a head start on your spring cleaning. I'm sure you have something in your home or garage that you never use or never have used. If you do, we want it for our auction!

Maybe you have a piece of furniture, a painting, or knick knack you are ready to replace...Un-opened gifts, presents you have been waiting to re-gift or great costume jewelry that just doesn't seem to go with anything in your wardrobe... A purse that seemed like a great deal when you bought it, but has never been used...Christmas gifts from your great aunt that still haven't been opened...Almost anything that looks new or is vintage and has a value of $20 or more would make fantastic auction items!

Please don't wait as the auction is coming up quickly. Take a minute or an hour to scour your house to find items to donate. Please do not go out and purchase a thing! Contact Maggie Young,  magsyoung@gmail.com 323-646-6856  to donate.

The Health Office
The school health office is administered by an experienced health aide.  The health aide's job responsibilities include keeping up with immunizations requirements and medical physicals for all students, tracking communicable diseases and communicating with parents if necessary, lice checks and clearances, applying bandages and ice to minor wounds that occur at school or at home, checking students for illnesses that involve fever, stomach upset, or headache, and calling parents or others on the Emergency Form should a student need to leave school. The health aide works with parents for the benefit of students.  Parents are asked to keep the health aide informed of any medical need of their child.

GRANDPARENT'S & SPECIAL FRIENDS DAY
Grandparents & Special Friends Day is Friday May 12 th .  It's our tradition to send out invitations to guest(s) you would like to invite to attend.  We are implementing a new process to update our database online, so even if you have given us guest names previously, please fill out this form.

Once again we are giving the Grandparents and Special Friends of the students of St. Philip the Apostle School an opportunity to honor their student through a donation to the Blessed are the Children Annual Giving Campaign.  Grandparents and Special Friends are a very important part of our school, and have always been supportive in giving of their time and their financial assistance.   On May 12th, we will honor them with our Grandparents and Special Friends Day.

Please submit by Friday, April 7th so we may send out the invitations before Easter.

* We only send invitations and/or BATC solicitations to those names you submit.

Please contact Colleen Welsh   cwelsh@stphiliptheapostle.org  or (626) 795-9691 x. 449 with questions.

What is Grandparents & Special Friends Day?
One day every school year, St. Philip the Apostle School opens up the campus and celebrates our students' Grandparents and Special Friends. The mission of this event is to honor and thank our SPAS Grandparents and Special Friends for all their love and support. It is also an opportunity to showcase our students' talent.
We encourage our guests to enjoy a reception and art show in Holy Angel Hall followed by May Crowning and a special prayer service (for Kindergarten we have a special program in the Hall exclusively for them), review students' academic and extracurricular accomplishments, join us for a Bake Sale and then join the students in class for a special activity. This is a joyful day for all at St. Philip the Apostle School.
The day begins for our guests at 8:30 and concludes at 11:30 a.m.  Due to the big crowds expected, we ask parents reserve this day exclusively for Grandparents & Special Friends.  Of course, we invite 8 th Grade parents to attend May Crowning and 7 th grade parents who supervise the Bake Sale.  We just ask you to reserve campus parking for our guests.
