The College of Agriculture and Natural Resources is embarking on a  comprehensive visioning process to determine how we can best serve the  State and its citizens. This is an all-inclusive process, designed to  encompass all three legs of our land grant mission.

As a key member of our community your participation is integral, and we're hoping to hear from you at one of our upcoming Listening Sessions. We are having four statewide Listening Sessions, with one in our area being held at the
Patuxent River 4-H Center at 18405 Queen Anne Rd., Upper Marlboro on  April 4, 2017.  The event will run from  5:30- 8:30 pm  and we will be providing  light refreshments.

Sessions will be tightly organized by select facilitators.  The session will offer you the unique opportunity to share thoughts on many facets of the college. The facilitators will provide feedback at the end of the session about the key themes emerging from the group.  All the data collected will be considered as we work to shape the future of our college.

I have attached a  letter from Dean Beyrouty outlining your importance as part of this process. You can register for a Listening Session using this link  to register right now.  Please let me know if you have any questions.  I can be reached at  410 222-3906  or email at  [email protected]

Thank you for your contributions to the college and I look forward to seeing you at the Listening Session.

Best regards,

FSNE Participates in Healthy Smoothie Competition

On February 28th, the Prince George's County FSNE (Food Supplement Nutrition Education) team participated in the "Tasty Tuesday" Healthy Smoothie Competition. This event took place as a part of Health Week at Springhill Lake Elementary School in Greenbelt, MD. Each grade entered an original smoothie recipe into the competition, choosing from FSNE provided ingredients such as fresh fruits, low-fat yogurt, and other fun "secret ingredients." To further connect to healthy eating behaviors, students and faculty were encouraged to dress as their favorite fruit or vegetable.

The FSNE team judged the smoothies based on fruit and vegetable content, appearance, and taste. The winning smoothie, a Kiwi-Colada Smoothie, was created by the 3rd grade classes and contained kiwi, bananas, strawberries, watermelon, honey, and milk. Physical Education teacher Stephanie Kohout served as coordinator for the event, and she shared:  "I heard a few students say they went home and made smoothies that night for their families, which made me extremely happy!" Other educators at the school also found the event to be exciting and educational. "The kids LOVED this activity. In our class, it turned into a cooking show where the kids came up and helped put the smoothie together, while our student Alaysia hosted and asked everyone questions. It was really fun," said 2nd grade teachers Ms. Barry and Mrs. Wilcher. Fifth grade teacher Mr. Williams shared details about his class' smoothie: "We added yogurt to our berry smoothie, it expanded, making it creamy and delicious. After tasting the smoothie, we poured the rest and shared it with the administrators, crisis staff, office staff, and Mr. Powell." The Healthy Smoothie Competition served as a great avenue for introducing new foods to some students and encouraging healthy eating for both students and their families.

Did You Know...

Did you know ...that shopping and cooking together encourages children to try new foods? Children are more likely to eat foods they help to choose and prepare. Even young children can help pour frozen vegetables from a package, tear and toss greens for a salad or mix and stir ingredients in a mixing bowl. Older children can rinse canned vegetables in a strainer, wash and Scrub fresh produce with a vegetable brush or mash cooked sweet potatoes. Did you know... Maryland has a growing oyster aquaculture industry and harvest of almost 19 million oysters in 2016 from farms around the Chesapeake Bay?  Oysters grown on aquaculture farms in Maryland are safe to eat all year long, not just the months with an "r" in them.  Recently the US Food and Drug Administration gave oysters a "Best Choice" rating which lists seafood that should be consumed more often by the people in the US.  For more information about seafood with the "Best Choice" rating please see the following website:

D i d you know ...that  the Prince George's County 4-H Office owns 3 incubators that can be used for e mbryology projects? Embryology is an excellent way for your club or school to engage in a hands-on animal science activity. The eggs hatch in approximately 3 weeks from the date of setting them in the incubator. Throughout that time, youth work together to ensure the proper environment and care of the developing chicks. Contact Alex Chan ( [email protected] ) for training and equipment check out.

Did you know...Decisions. We make them every day. A decision is a choice that is made about things that affect a person's life. Throughout our day we make many decisions, big and small, or routine and major. Our decisions are guided by what we value, or what we believe is desirable, worthwhile, and important.
