HCDC Business Center
got into the startup business in 1989-- long before "startup" became part of Cincinnati's vernacular.
Among the companies launched at the Business Center: Intrexon, which went public in 2013. HCDC helps to grow businesses and jobs in 3 simple ways: businesses incubation, business lending, and economic development services.
Incubation happens at the HCDC Business Center, where client companies can access a variety of affordable work spaces, administrative resources, connections, and perhaps most importantly, four full time business coaches.
Over 30 companies have been acquired while in the Incubation program thanks in part to the coaches' guidance.
"Our coaches are differentiators. They sit at the shoulder of the entrepreneur and work on planning, milestones and implementation," says HCDC Business Center Director Pat Longo.
The HCDC Lending department can process loans for the purchase of land, buildings, and capital equipment, which helps local startups. One recent example is the wildly popular MadTree Brewing 2.0 facility in Oakley, which involved a $5.2 million loan from HCDC.
HCDC'S third program is its Economic Development Office, which helps communities throughout Hamilton County. HCDC has been recognized as both a top incubator and a top small business lender.

Bloomberg's "50 Most Promising Startups You've Never Heard Of." Or, Eccrine Systems + 49 Other Promising Startups
Bloomberg recently asked market research firm Quid to apply criteria, including fundraising pace and sector potential, to 50,000 under-the-radar companies to determine
the "50 Most Promising Startups You've Never Heard Of." Among those listed: portfolio company
Eccrine Systems.
Eccrine Systems is developing non-invasive, electronic wearable systems that measure and transmit real-time data about human sweat.
"It's very exciting that smart sweat sensors are being recognized as one of the most promising opportunities in the world," said Eccrine Systems CEO Robert Beech. "Fortunately, we got out of the gate early in the space thanks to strong support from the CincyTech investor community and the State of Ohio's Third Frontier initiative. Eccrine Systems and the Cincinnati region are now the epicenter of this rapidly emerging opportunity and its wide range of commercial and medical applications."
Bloomberg reports Quid last made a list like this in 2009. "Nearly eight years later, the list had its share of flops-companies that shut down or lost value-but some notable home runs as well. Cloudera, Palantir, Evernote, Twitch and Spotify all increased at least 30 times in value since 2009. If (the) list had been a venture portfolio, it would have been one of the best-performing funds of the last two decades."
NEW TO OUR PORTFOLIO: Xact Medical
CincyTech is pleased to announce our latest investment:
Xact Medical. Xact Medical's Fast Intelligent Needle Delivery (FIND) system uses robotics and ultrasound to guide a needle tip to a precise location in the body. The company is based on technology from our partner Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center and Ben Gurion University in Israel.
"Cincinnati Children's is increasingly a source of medical innovation, and Xact Medical is the latest example," said John Rice, director of life
sciences at CincyTech and chairman of the board of Xact. "CincyTech is excited to again partner with Cincinnati Children's and be on the ground floor of this promising company."
