Dear Community,

As I hope most of you know, students from North Penn High School's (NPHS) Technology and Engineering Department traveled to London during the month of March for an International Science Conference at St. Paul's School in London.

The trip came as a result of a prestigious invitation that department chair Mr. Mike Boyer received in the fall following a visit from Dr. James Perkins, a physics teacher and head of science research at St. Paul's School, one of the leading independent schools in the United Kingdom. Perkins visited NPHS in early November. During his stay, he was able to see the NPHS nanotechnology research students in action. Perkins asked a lot of questions and received many takeaways to go back and share these best practices in London.

At the conclusion of Perkins' visit, he invited Mr. Boyer's students from the Engineering and Design Development (EDD) course to present their nanotechnology and engineering research at an International Science Conference at St. Paul's School in London in March. Eight students from the course along with Boyer and newly hired engineering teacher Mrs. Julia Young attended, making North Penn the first high school to represent the US at this international conference and giving NPHS students the opportunity to present their research alongside students from across the globe.

NPHS won the best overall presentation as voted by their peers at the conference via online voting. The students and teachers had a blast, learned a lot and made lifelong connections and memories at the International Science Conference at St. Paul's School in London.

I'd like to extend my appreciation to North Penn students, staff, families and the community for supporting the NPHS Engineering program through many fundraising efforts on behalf of this trip. A special thanks also goes out to the North Penn School District Educational Foundation who donated $1,000 to each student for a total of $8,000 towards this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Without the help of our generous community and partner organizations, this trip would not have been possible.

Congratulations to the students and staff of the NPHS Technology Education and Engineering Department. Thank you for continuing the legacy of greatness and innovation that is the North Penn School District. To see more photos from the trip, click here

Sincerely,

NPHS English Department Hosts 5th Annual Lit-Fest

The NPHS English Department proudly hosted the fifth annual Lit-Fest to be held on Tuesday, February 14 in the NPHS Auditorium from 12:48 p.m. to 2:12 p.m.

Lit-Fest, an event which is made possible in part by a grant from the North Penn Educational Foundation, is a celebration of literature highlighting honors students' appreciation and understanding of the scope of American Literature covered in the junior year curriculum.

Lit-Fest has several components including a dramatic reading contest, artwork presentations and a knowledge bowl. Students signed up individually to read selections of literature to the audience as part of the reading contest. The honors teachers kicked off Lit-Fest by delivering their own selected passage from an American author. Students also signed up individually to create artistically inspired book covers or visual renderings for any of the works in the curriculum. Finally, each section of the honors classes competed as a team to answer questions in the Knowledge Bowl in hopes to be crowned Lit-Fest Champions for 2017.

Congratulations to Mr. Manero and Mrs. Weizer's classes for tying as the 2017 Lit-Fest Champions!

PA Senator Bob Mensch Visits North Penn High School Technology and Engineering Department

The NPHS Technology and Engineering Department excitedly welcomed Pennsylvania Senator Bob Mensch to visit Mr. Mike Boyer's Engineering Design and Development (EDD) classes to observe open labs and research on Wednesday, February 15 at 9:45 a.m. in H-Pod at NPHS.

Senator Mensch's visit came as a result of a prestigious invitation that the engineering students received in the fall following a visit from Dr. James Perkins, a physics teacher and head of science research at St. Paul's School, one of the leading independent schools in the United Kingdom. Perkins visited NPHS in early November.

At the conclusion of Perkins' visit, he invited Mr. Boyer's students from the EDD course to present their nanotechnology and engineering research at an International Science Conference at St. Paul's School in London this March.

When Senator Mensch caught wind of the honor, he decided to plan a trip out to NPHS to visit these remarkable students and their impressive lab.

Pennbrook Students Read to Meet Their Hero

Thirty lucky students from Pennbrook Middle School traveled to the Philadelphia Flyers' practice area in Voorhees, NJ on February 8 as part of Pennbrook's sixth annual "What Should Matt Read?" competition.

For years, Pennbrook Middle School Librarian Shari Cassel has worked diligently to create innovative programs that encourage her students to read. One of the more effective programs owes its success to Philadelphia Flyer Matt Read. Now in its sixth season, the "What Should Matt Read?" initiative challenges students to read as many books as possible and write reports on those they believe Matt Read might enjoy.

All of this reading happens because each student is hoping to be one of thirty lucky winners selected at random to take the "Fabulous Flyers Field Trip" in February. These students take a break from their school day to watch the Flyers practice at their facility in Voorhees, NJ. When practice is over, Matt Read spends time with the students signing autographs, answering questions and posing for pictures.

Knapp Elementary Starts With Hello

During the week of February 6 through 10, hundreds of schools and youth organizations across the nation participated in Start With Hello Week, which brings attention to the growing epidemic of social isolation while empowering young people to create a culture of inclusion and connectedness.

The staff at Knapp Elementary kicked off Start With Hello Week by proudly sporting matching T-Shirts and showing a short video describing the campaign and why it is so important to include others.

NPHS Students Earn Outstanding Scores at MCATFL James J. Doyle Oral Proficiency Contest

The North Penn School District is proud to recognize six students from North Penn High School for their outstanding achievement in the Montgomery County Association of Teachers of Foreign Languages (MCATFL) James J. Doyle Oral Proficiency Contest held on Tuesday, February 28 at Plymouth Whitemarsh High School.
