April is distracted driving awareness month
Technology allows us to make phone calls, send texts and emails, and update social media while driving -- all of which can lead to an accident or worse.

In observance of the National Safety Council's April as Distracted Driving Awareness Month, Chesapeake Employers Insurance is drawing attention to this problem as well.

We have a poster and tip sheet that employers can share with their employees to help warn of the dangers of distracted driving.

Return-to-work program utilizing local nonprofits being piloted successfully in SBU

Since November 2016, Chesapeake Employers' SBU has been partnering with ReEmployAbility, a Florida company, to help get injured workers back to work after a work injury or accident.

"The program is being piloted successfully in the SBU," according to Tammy Longan, SBU Director. Tammy has presented this new program to several policyholders over the last few months and the program has had several referrals.

"Essentially, the program is an extension of a policyholder's Return-to-Work program," explains Tammy. An early Return-to-Work program is one that gives employers the flexibility to change parts of an employee's normal work duties to accommodate an employee's temporary physical limitations after a workplace injury has occurred.

Claims adjusters and nurse case managers can refer injured workers to the program, once those workers have been cleared by their physicians to return to work on a limited basis. ReEmployAbility then considers the workers' medical restrictions and finds them work with a Maryland nonprofit organization within 5 miles of their homes.

The goal is to get injured workers back in the habit of working. The job assignments often have the added benefit of helping Maryland nonprofit organizations, many of which are often short-staffed and in need of additional help.
If you are interested in finding out more about this program, please contact your claims adjuster or email Tammy at [email protected].

My passion for helping customers:
I like to treat people the way I would like to be treated.

The part of my job that I am particularly proud of:
I take pride in conflict resolution and working with both employers and injured workers to make sure that everyone is treated fairly. I also take pride in knowing that benefits are paid timely and accurately according to the laws of Maryland.

No one knows that:
I have a passion for animals. My husband is a veterinarian and we have 5 cats, a dog, a bird and 2 turtles. My favorite thing is interacting one-on-one, petting and feeding exotic animals -- tiger cubs, lynx cubs, wolves, an orangutan, an elephant, rhinos and giraffes!
