Saturday, April 15, 2016 (9 am to Noon) 
Since inception as a fall event, the combined neighborhoods of Kerns and Buckman have hosted the annual spring clean-up since the 1990s, giving residents a chance to off-load disused items from their households, and to support, through donations, various activities of the neighborhoods including picnics, holiday gatherings, and other occasions.
Now known as Community Collection Events, the spring event features partnerships between neighborhood coalitions, the City of Portland, and METRO, organized as an investment in community, providing Portland residents a chance to dispose bulky household waste that often accumulates in the home and might otherwise be disposed inappropriately. The events emphasize recycling and re-use of items instead of disposal if possible. The 2017 Kerns Buckman CCE is scheduled for the following day/location: When: Saturday, April 15, 2017 from 9:00AM to 12:00PM Where: Hinson Memorial Baptist Church, 1137 SE 20th Avenue. Enter on Salmon from 20th Avenue. Bins tend to fill quickly so try to arrive early in the event. Volunteers please show up by 0840L to complete necessary SOLVE forms. All donated items not immediately disposed of will be set aside in a free area of reusable items that anyone may take home with them. Donation: $15-40 asked depending on load (bicyclists are free). Yard debris can cost the neighborhoods a lot to process, so if you have this, please try to donate a little extra to help offset our costs. Money raised goes toward the costs of the collection event and for other neighborhood events in the Kerns and Buckman communities. Accepted Waste Materials. Bulk household waste of a non-biodegradable nature (paper, plastic, glass, clothing, metal), furniture, small appliances, tires. Automotive batteries. Yard debris. Paint cans without lids and dried paint are acceptable. ARC will be there with a donation truck and used clothing items are especially welcome. Accepted Recycling Materials. Computers, televisions, cell phones, LCD/CRT/DLP monitors, printers, and other electronics. Materials Currently Not Accepted. Food waste or household garbage. Batteries. Lamps & bulbs. Large appliances (washers/dryers/ranges/refrigerators/air conditioners/water heaters), exercise equipment. Fire extinguishers. Hazardous waste, flammables. PLEASE NOTE that this year we must prohibit disposal of all materials from construction, remodeling, and demolition, due to risk of asbestos. Such materials include vinyl flooring tiles, sheet, mastic, ceiling acoustical tiles, popcorn & spray-on texture, plaster walls & decorative plaster, cement siding shingles (transite), insulation (spray-on, blown-in, vermiculite, pipe, HVAC, lagging), electrical wire insulation & panel partitions, AND fire doors, fire brick, or other fireproofing. Graffiti Around Town Seems Worse Than Ever? 
A recent report to City Council by Juliette Muracchioli from the Office of Neighborhood Involvement's (ONI) Graffiti Abatement Program, high priority graffiti reports involving hate or gang tags have increased considerably from 2011 through 2016. Much of this increase has occurred in the past two to three years.
Threat of the Program being totally disbanded, ONI is asking City Council to not only maintain current budget levels, but to expand it so that Portland can better combat this crime. How you can help right now:

Season Work Parties Begin In April! 
Friends of Laurelhurst Park contribute to the health and beauty of Laurelhurst Park.
The coming season work parties will begin in April and occur from 9:00 to noon on the second Wednesday of each month through October. Those who wish to participate may mark their calendars for April 12, May 10, June 14, July 12, August 9, September 13 And October 11. Help the City of Portland develop its planting strategy to ensure that all residents have access to trees.
The tree canopy in Portland is not equitably distributed throughout the city: lower income neighborhoods have significantly lower tree canopy than other neighborhoods. Portland Parks & Recreation Urban Forestry is partnering with community members, stakeholders, and Portland State University to identify the best ways to expand tree canopy access for all residents. The Citywide Tree Planting Strategy Advisory Committee will work closely with Parks to provide input to provide input. The committee will meet five times from June through October 2017 and will assist with: · Identifying barriers to tree planting for low income communities · Providing recommendations on how to work with communities to plant trees and gain support, with special attention to communities of color and low income communities · Reviewing City bureau and public agency priorities around tree planting · Reviewing a prioritization data tool for selecting tree planting sites Advisory committee applications are due April 14. Portland NET 
Sign-up is for you to reserve a seat in the Basic NET Training that will run in late April/early May.
Dates for the classroom part of the training will be the following three Saturdays: 04/29/17 8:00 AM to 3:30 PM 05/06/17 9:00 AM to 3:30 PM 05/13/17 9:00 AM to 3:30 PM A trainee is expected to be in ALL three of those classes in order to graduate (however, a trainee can take some classes now, the rest later, and graduate later). When you sign up here, you are automatically signing up for those three days. In addition to the classroom sessions, there will be a Final Field Exercise (FFE). The FFE is the hands-on part of the Basic NET Training and is also required for graduation. When you sign up below, select ONE slot which will represent the date/time you take your FFE. | Apply For The Community Advisory Committee!
The plan will prioritize sidewalks, crossing improvements, and other investments to make walking safer and more comfortable across the city. It will identify the key strategies and tools we will use to make Portland a truly great walking city.
To help guide development of the plan, PBOT is now recruiting Portlanders to apply to serve on the PedPDX Community Advisory Committee (CAC). PedPDX CAC members will serve as public officials for the duration of the planning process and provide feedback that will be considered for integration into the plan, which will go before City Council for adoption in approximately Fall/Winter 2018. PedPDX is an update of Portland's 1998 Pedestrian Master Plan, which has served as a model across the country for pedestrian-friendly policies and design. It includes a citywide project list that has guided pedestrian infrastructure investments for the past 18 years.

Off-road Cycling Master Plan invites Portlanders to explore and comment on options for new safe and healthy places to ride bicycles on dirt trails or in bike parks.
Increasing off-road cycling opportunities throughout the city offers more Portlanders of all ages and abilities the chance to be active outside, experience nature in the city and enjoy riding a bicycle. Let BPS know which places should be recommended for a new off-road trail and park system.
