Join us for Evening Presentation on Mindfulness
with Dr. Dana Hodgdon from Torrance Memorial
Monday, March 20, 6:30 p.m. in the OAR.

Parent Presentation by Dana Hodgdon, PhD on the Psychology of Mindfulness
Dr. Dana Hodgdon graduated with a Masters Degree in psychology in 1996 and has held positions at various hospitals throughout Southern California since that time. He received a Ph.D. in Psychology in 2015. For the last eighteen years, he has worked with Torrance Memorial Hospice providing bereavement and end of life therapy. Dana has a significant amount of experience providing therapy surrounding issues of addiction, relationship difficulties, depression, anxiety, and bereavement. In addition, Dana provides regular lectures and seminars at Torrance Memorial Medical Center and the surrounding community on topics such as Coping with Stress, Bereavement, Death and Dying, and Mindfulness Based Practices. Although he sees a person's family history as being crucial to understanding the current circumstances, Dana's focus is on a person's strengths based on the notion that much of therapy is centered on regaining balance in the face of imbalance.

Alinea Rock Band Performing Locally

Three PV High students are gaining notoriety for their rock band Alinea! The band was founded by John "JJ" Barry, singer and lead guitarist. Bandmates Nick Thompsen on bass and Lance Meliota on drums along with Ben Tyrrell, singer & rhythm guitarist from Torrance High, formed Alinea two years ago. The band writes and plays original alternative rock music. (On a side note, John Barry and Lance Meliota first played together at a 5th Grade talent show at Silver Spur Elementary School!)

After rocking the house at the popular local nightclub Saint Rocke, in Hermosa Beach, Alinea was very excited to be invited back on March 25th. Since this club is for 21-and over, the band wanted to play at a venue where their friends could get in and that opportunity has arrived! Alinea will be playing live on Friday, March 24th at Amplyfi in Hollywood, which is open to all ages (no alcohol). The boys are hoping to see their PVHS classmates in the audience!

Alinea played at PVHS's Remember the Triton's last month in February. The band has been recording their songs and will be going back in the studio in the next few weeks to do more.

Follow Alinea on Facebook and Instagram #alineatheband

Swim:
It was a busy week for swim with 2 meets in 3 days at the PV pool. On Wednesday, the Sea Kings took on a very strong Santa Monica team and SMHS came away with the wins. The meet produced 4 CIF consolation times. Those came from  Boys Varsity 200 Free Relay team (Barez, Stonemason, Feingold, Leonard, G.) 1:33.67 and the Boys Varsity 400 Free Relay team (Leonard, G., Stonemason, Colorer, Barez) 3:27.18; along with individual CIF Consolation times for:  Nico Colomer, 500 Free, 4:57.38 and Emma Chang, 100 Back, 1:03.42

On Friday, the team hosted South Torrance and swept the team competitions! The  individual  highlight was Nico Colorer improving his 500 Free CIF Consolation time:  4:57.32

Boys Golf:
This week will be very busy for our golfers as the have two matches against South Torrance and a tournament on Friday in Corona. Good luck Sea Kings!

Girls Lacrosse:
Girls Lacrosse hit the road this week and took on Westlake. Despite the illnesses and absences that are going around PVHS, the team played through it and won 12-7!

Boys Lacrosse:
The Sea Kings regained their winning ways, with two victories this week. They defeated the Agoura Chargers 15-5 at home and then traveled to Santa Margarita on Thursday. PV got out quickly and held on for an 8-6 victory over the Eagles.

Baseball:
Two strong showings have the Sea Kings up to 5-1 for the season! PV defeated Hawthorne HS 12-3 and then beat Santa Monica HS 4-3 on Saturday. The team is looking strong heading in to the annual Lions Tournament at the end of this coming week.

Softball:
PV found their winning ways this week in part of the Torrance TNT tournament. Early tournament games included a 5-0 los to St.Anthony's and a 12-5 loss to host Torrance. But then the Sea Kings got a 2-1 win over Jefferson HS of Texas and a 7-2 win over Hawthorne HS. The team will host South Torrance on Tuesday.

Boys Tennis:
The Tennis team split two matches this week. They came away with a win against West Torrance and then a12-6 loss to perennial tennis power Palisades.

Track and Field:
It was an exciting week of competition in the Mustang Relays at Mira Costa HS. The meet highlight was the finale, the boys pole vault competition. Colton Russell came in to the meet with a lifetime best of 13'0" and by the end of the evening, he emerged with a new personal best of 15'0" which vastly surpassed the all-time (going back to 1961) school record at PVHS, which had been 13'6" by current PV coach Graham Bentz.

The teams will take on Redondo Union and Inglewood on Thursday and the distance runners will have the Azusa Distance Meet of Champions on Saturday.

Boys Volleyball:
The Sea Kings had a light schedule this week after their busy tournament schedule from the previous week. It was a great match at home on Wednesday vs Servite. Down 2-1, the Sea Kings rallied to defeat the Servite Friars in the final 2 sets and win 3-2 overall.  The   team begins Bay League play this week against Inglewood HS.

PVHS Arts, Academics, and Athletic Programs:  Improved Dance Facilities Fundraiser 2017

Let's come together as a community! Four hundred PVHS students, including those in Choreo, Song, Cheer, Intermediate Dance, Musical Theater, Drama, Jazz Band, Color Guard, Yoga, P.E. Dance, school clubs, and various academic programs utilize the dance facilities every day for training, preparation, and education. Rehearsals for pep rallies, shows, sports, and theatrical productions are also held in the dance facilities.

PVHS requires updated, properly sprung dance floors to ensure a safe and appropriate training environment. The sprung floors will help decrease injuries resulting from the poor condition of our existing floors which were installed in 1961. The estimated cost to upgrade the facilities is $60,000.00 and our goal is to complete this project no later than July 2017.

The PVHS Booster Club has generously contributed $12,500.00 with an additional $30,000.00 from the District and School Site Funds. $2,500.00 has been raised to date, and an additional $15,000.00 must still be raised to support this project. To reach our fundraising goal, we would appreciate $100.00 or more per family, but any donation will make a difference. Thank you for making great things happen at PVHS!
