Hope you are enjoying the Spring season so far. Last week we held our annual Spring Concert featuring one of my favorite bands, the Dustbowl Revival. We had about 1,000 residents at Marine Stadium enjoying great music, perfect weather, tasty food trucks and a fun bounce houses for kids.  A big thanks to Lisa West from my team for putting on this exceptional event. It's really important to me to continue to fund activities that bring our residents outdoors to enjoy the beauty of our amazing city.  Thank you to those who came out to enjoy the concert.

One of my favorite annual events is the Principle for a Day program.  This year I was fortunate to serve as Principle for a Day at Wilson High School. I would like to give special thanks to the administrative team for all the information about the amazing new programs at Wilson.  One thing I learned is, it's always "a great day to be a Bruin".
On March 18th, we officially opened the youth sport court in Marina Vista Park.  This project was part of our Youth Participatory Budgeting process. As part of the process, the youth committee was given a budget of $100,000 and were tasked with conducting outreach to middle and high school students in the 3rd district and come up with a list of possible projects.  They then held a vote at all the local schools, with the help of the City Clerk's Office.  720 students voted and the youth sport court project was selected.   We hope to name the youth sport court after Luke Johnson, who served on the committee while he was battling leukemia.  Luke passed away prior to the completion of the sport court so it would be a fitting way to honor his memory by adding his name to this accomplishment.

On March 23rd, our office held a community meeting to discuss the Traffic Engineer's proposal for the Peninsula "Road Diet".  The meeting was very productive because it cleared up a lot of the misinformation about the design and allowed residents to ask questions and get answers from the experts in Traffic Engineering, Special Events, Police, and Fire. I was happy this team was able to attend and eliminate many of the concerns and common misunderstandings about the proposed changes while also receiving input on how to make it the most successful. You can view the presentation that was shown at the meeting here

This past month my staff was also very involved in several community inspired programs. We organized a Tsumani education walk on March 25th.  Thank you to resident Jason Ballmann for spearheading this activity with our office.  Then later on that day, we had the dedication of the Joan Lind Van Blom bridge in memory of her athletic and community accomplishments.  On March 26th, my team and I participated in the 3rd Annual Make a Difference Day event.  Over 350 volunteered registered to participate in multiple community service projects. Our team planted trees throughout Belmont Shore and Alamitos Heights.  Thanks to 3rd district resident and tree expert, Brett Beck, who led our team.

As you can see it has been another busy month for our office.  Please feel free to reach out to us if you need anything. Also, please encourage your friends and neighbors to register for our mailing list.  We are always looking for opportunities to broaden our communication efforts so that everyone is in the know about the latest city and district happenings.

Have a great April!

COMMUNITY PLANTING DAY - May 6

Team members from the Leadership Long Beach Institute Class of 2017 will join forces with the City of Long Beach, Councilwoman Suzie Price's office, and various other local stakeholders to launch the Community Median Beautification Project. This will serve as a pilot project which will be the foundation to improving medians throughout the City of Long Beach. The community event, a capstone project of the Leadership Long Beach class, will look to replant a median in the Alamitos Heights area with California drought resistant landscaping. The Leadership Long Beach Team envisioned a Long Beach where the collective efforts of a community could create a drastic enhancement of the landscapes in their neighborhood. This team consists of Antonella Schaub, Erin Wilson, Nima Novin, Drew Schneider, and Helen Dosta Tol; and with the help of the community, this team will make this vision a reality.

The Community Median Beautification Project pilot will take place at Bellflower Blvd, south of PCH and just north of Colorado St. The two southbound lanes will be closed beginning at 7AM on May 6 until 3 PM. Long Beach local landscape designer Todd Bennitt of  Bennitt Design Group  will be designing the new landscape of the four medians with drought resistant trees and plants. The team gained expert insight from Doug Sato, of Things Green, and support from a local crew at Lowe's, Parks, Recreation, and Marine, the Conservation Corp., and community members. This one hundred foot (100') median will receive a substantial makeover and serve as a model for others interested in transforming their community medians, parkways, and roundabouts. The project has gained incredible local support and is looking for volunteers around the community to put their stamp on the beautification efforts.

The project day will be filmed and featured on the local KLCS-TV/PBS program, Things Green with Nick Federoff. Planting day volunteers can sign up directly at Sign up or via e-mail  erinwilson81@gmail.com.

RECAP OF EVENTS
SPRING INTO SUMMER - RECAP

Another extremely well attended Spring into Summer Community Concert is in the books! Our 3rd annual was very close to being our most attended event to date. As Councilwoman Price has said, "It is an event that brings the community together for an update on what is going on in the 3rd District, to meet their 3rd District commissioners, and to share in some neighborly spirit and fun." The event took place on Sunday, March 26th at Marine Stadium Park, which is close to a month ahead of last years date, hence the Spring into Summer reference, but it didn't seem to make a difference this year. Participants were able to enjoy music from the band, The Dustbowl Revival, eat from numerous food trucks and a great kettle corn vendor, and kids really enjoyed the double decker bounce house.

The highlight of the evening was the amazing performance by The Dustbowl Revival. They have a special way of captivating and entertaining the crowd, both young and old. There were an estimated 800+ attendees. This was such a fun event, and Councilwoman Price and team look forward to introducing spring (or summer) to the residents for years to come.

WALK THE WALK - RECAP

After a long anticipated hiatus from Walk the Walk events due to uncooperative weather, our office was finally able to host a Walk the Walk on Sunday, March 26th. We were very excited to partner with Long Beach's Disaster Preparedness Department and the Southern California Earthquake Center on this Tsunami Walk to bring awareness to the need for disaster preparedness.

Sunday's Walk the Walk event kicked off Tsunami Preparedness Week and attendees began the morning learning about the threat that tsunamis pose to some residents and how to plan ahead in your individual families and as a community to ensure safety. The city's disaster preparedness department were able to educate residents on how to react in the event that the safety of our community is being threatened by a tsunami and attendees even received some fun survival goodies! We are looking forward to working alongside the city to encourage all of our residents to become aware of disaster preparedness steps.

A special thank you to Jason Ballmann, Reggie Harrison and Allison Bright for working with our office to organize this event for the 3rd District residents.

JOAN LIND VAN BLOM MEMORIAL BRIDGE -  DEDICATION RECAP

On Saturday, March 25th - Over 150 family members, friends and fans gathered to hold a tribute and bridge dedication
in honor of Joan Lind Van Blom.   The event was organized by Councilw oman Suzie Price, with special input by Senator Janet Nguyen, Councilman Daryl Supernaw, and the Long Beach Century Club.  The bridge was funded by these offices as well.  State senator Nguyen was responsible for bringing the legislation to the S tate of California, where she received no hesitation from her counterparts.

Nine speakers were on hand to describe the many memories of Joan  Van Blom from her days at Wilson High School to her Olympic competitions and the contributions she made to the students of Long  Beach as an educator with LBUSD.  Especially poignant was Long Beach Gazettes columnist Jo Murray, who spearheaded the idea of getting a memorial dedicated in Joan's name.  John Van Blom was thankful to everyone who helped see the bridge renaming come to fruition.  His speech was so heartfelt and moving.  As Councilwoman Price said, "Joan serves as an inspiration for all of us because of her commitment to serving her community."

We are all better because of the lifetime achievements and legacy Joan has left us with.

PACIFIC ELECTRIC RIGHT OF WAY

The Pacific Electic Right of Way (PEROW) project is another project that our office is excited to be advocating for. The Red Car Greenway project is on track and the project was advertised for bid this week. There is a mandatory pre-bid meeting with interested contractors scheduled for 4.12.17 and all bids are due on 4.26.17. After the bid deadline, a winning bid will be identified and references will be checked; at which point, the award of contract and approval of plans and specifications will be put on the agenda for City Council approval. Once the project is approved by City Council and both parties sign the contract, the contractor will be cleared for construction. The PEROW is a major asset to our entire community and we are excited about the improvements that this project will bring.

6th STREET BIKE  BOULEVARD

The 6th Street Bike Boulevard project is well underway and our office is excited to see this project move  forward. Similar to the Vista Bike Boulevard, the 6th Street Bike Boulevard will include traffic circles and round abouts. Although this project was not introduced in response to traffic concerns, it will have the added benefit of positively impacting traffic speeds and traffic safety. The traffic circles and roundabout often act as traffic slowing de vices. The contract for the project is on the City Council agenda for April 11 and construction is expected to start this summer with project completion by the end of 2017.

MEASURE E UPDATE

On March 15, 2017, changes to the Measure E implementation plan were presented to the LBUSD Board of Education. During the presentation it was announced that the entire Rogers's staff and student population will no longer be moving to the Mary Butler site for the 2018-2019 school year. The new plan calls for interim housing to be placed at Rogers beginning this summer. In January of 2018, the classrooms and offices housed in Roger's main building will relocate to those temporary buildings. The resulting loss of classroom space will necessitate the grade eight class of 2017-2018 (Roger's current grade seven students) be relocated and transported daily to the Browning High School campus for the remainder of the school year.

While many details of the construction phases and the move are still being considered, you can access the following links for updates on the progress of the Measure E implementation plan:

Dancing for Water @ Long Beach!

Mark your calendars! Long Beach will dance for water on June 24th 2017! Global Water Dances (GWD) is a visionary worldwide event of simultaneous outdoor performances illuminating water issues, inspiring and empowering citizens to take action. These performances are open to the public and free of charge, and are shared by live streaming and video uploads on the website www.globalwaterdances.org.

Long Beach is going to join Global Water Dances for the very first time this year, at Alfredo's Beach Club - Granada Beach! Global Water Dances - Long Beach, is focused on taking care of our beaches, local empowerment, intending to inspire environmental knowledge, and activation of public spaces through dance. Both dancers and audience members will participate and have fun while taking care of our precious resource: Water!

Do you want to join us? We are looking for local dancers (both professional and also dance enthusiasts), musicians, artists, partner organizations, and volunteers for visual and social media.  BELLFLOWER ROAD DIET - 7th & ATHERTON

  - Jack Cunningham

WESTMINSTER  BOULEVARD BIKE LANE

Easy access to grocery shopping or retail is not a major concern for most Long Beach residents, but in the case of the community of Island Village who must navigate one of the busiest intersections in the city in order  to shop,  this is a daily frustration. Not many Long Beach residents are aware of this  community that is nestled between the San Gabriel River and the Seal Beach border.

These residents have long sought better connectivity to  the rest of Long Beach as they are separated from the rest of the city by a mile of wetlands. These wetlands may provide a beautiful view and habitat for sensitive plant and wildlife species, but they make it impossible to install sidewalks for residents to walk or bike. So, with these ongoing concerns and constraints in mind I am excited to say that Westminister Ave. will be receiving road repairs as well as a protected bike lane to improve access and safety for those traveling this busy stretch of road.

BUSINESS
THE BEACH ON 2nd STREET

A great example of a small business with a big vision is The Beach On 2nd Street. From the first time I walked into this Cal State Long Beach   spirit store in Belmont Shore I felt a sense of pride and spirit that emanates through the front door.  Councilwoman Price has always displayed an extreme amount of enthusiasm and energy for anything CSULB and this store is a very convenient way to get your garb on...from pennant flags, to hoodies to cool Beach  skateboards, you can find a ton of branded merchandise for the fan or Long Beach tourist alike.
The Beach on 2nd Street and the CSULB University Bookstore are managed by the 49er Shops, a non-profit organization that employs students from the university. "Our main focus is on getting students to come down to Belmont Shore to exp lore the area as well as shop with us," said Maggie Gonz aga, Lead Supervisor. "We embrace the rich community that Long Beach has to offer by having an off-campus location in Belmont Shore where students, alumni, and families can enjoy browsing our inventory."  The best part is that they carry the top best sellers of CSULB gear, new clothing and gifts, and Long Beach gear. They are also avid participants in the Belmont Shore Business Association events that arise and encourage the supportive atmosphere among small businesses.   Additionally, all purchases made at the Beach on 2nd Street support CSULB programs and students as all of the profits are invested back into supporting their mission of student success.
Please make a point to support this great jewel of a store!

D O YOU KNOW.....
WHAT'S HAPPENING WITH THE POOL?

The Environmental Impact Report developed by City staff and presented to the Planning Commission is being appealed by a small group (6) of Long Beach residents. This means the project will be discussed at the May 16th City Council Meeting, so we encourage all those who would like their public comment to be considered by council in evaluating this project. The proposed new Belmont Pool was designed after the previous pool was deemed seismically unsafe and demolished. With the significant role aquatic competition plays in Long Beach this pool would fill a need for high school and collegiate level swimming and diving meets, as well as provide the community with public access to pools for recreational and educational aquatic usage.

OPERATION HEALTHY AIR - Long Beach Community Survey

The Aquarium of the Pacific has partnered with University of California Riverside and the Earthwatch Institute on a new citizen science program called "Operation Healthy Air."  We are currently looking for feedback from Long Beach residents, to help shape this study.  We have a quick 2-5 min survey that we are hoping you would share with your constituents and community leaders.

Your input matters!

The Aquarium of the Pacific, University of California Riverside, and Earthwatch Institute want you, as a Long Beach resident, to help shape a new citizen science program called "Operation Healthy Air."

We are seeking input from the Long Beach community to not only help collect the information needed, but also shape where the research takes place and the questions being asked.

Your ideas and experiences will help shape how we set up a network of air sensors to measure heat and air quality in Long Beach.  Sharing your experiences with heat in the city will help shape the study process and questions asked in this citizen science project.

We are seeking input from the Long Beach community to not only help collect the information needed, but also shape where the research takes place and the questions being asked.  While all results are anonymous, the survey does ask the respondents for their zip codes so we will be able to share the results from your regions with you and other Long Beach leaders.

AAUW WORK SMARK WORKSHP - APRIL - 5

Are you earning what you deserve?

In 2015, full-time working women in the U.S earned 80% of what men earn. In California, the figure is 86% - better, but still not at parity. A portion of this gap is attributed to women's lack of knowledge in how to best negotiate for their salaries and benefits.  Created for working women, AAUW Work Smart is a free interactive workshop that teaches you to evaluate, negotiate, and articulate your worth confidently in the job market. AAUW's facilitators lead discussions on the gender pay gap and its personal effects, while small group activities and role-play exercises give you the opportunity to create and perfect your persuasive salary pitches. You learn objective research and benchmarking skills to establish an equitable target salary, whether you are striving for a promotion, asking for a raise, or negotiating a new salary and benefits.  Coordinated by American Association of University Women (AAUW) Long Beach, this AAUW Work Smart workshop on April 5, the day after Equal Pay Day, is sponsored by Los Angeles County Supervisor Janice Hahn. Attendance is limited to 40 participants. Reservations for the workshop must be made online at salary.aauw.org/longbeach. Come learn how to negotiate what you deserve!
