Rocket Review Monthly Newsletter 2017

From The Principal's Desk
Mrs. Julia Wackt

My favorite holiday is fast approaching; Easter! It is not about the candy, the bunny, or the egg hunt. For me, it is about the feeling I have inside when I am sitting in church and sing "Jesus Christ has Risen Today". It is about the feeling of taking part in communion. It is about the smell of the Easter lilies. It's the feeling of the sun hitting me through the stain glass window as I sit on the pew. And the most important, it is ALL about eternal life. Because of Jesus dying on the cross, defeating Satan, and rising again I will have eternal life in Heaven with Him and our Father.

As you sit in church on Easter, think about the meaning of this this day. Think about the amazing gift that has been given to you. HE HAS RISEN!!!

Blessings -  Mrs. Wackt

GOTR
Girls On The Run

The 2017 Spring Season of Girls on the Run is up and running! This international, award-winning after school program inspires girls to  be joyful, healthy and confident using a fun, experience-based curriculum which creatively integrates running.

Ms. Witan and I have a group of fifteen energetic girls, eight from Lebanon Lutheran, four from our neighbor, Lebanon Public, two from St. Paul's Oconomowoc, and one from Good Shepherd. We meet every Tuesday and Thursday after school leading up to our grand finale on Thursday, May 25th. That is when all 100 girls from the Watertown GOTR Council will come together to run a 5K.  Running is used to inspire and motivate girls, encourage lifelong health and fitness, and build confidence through accomplishment. Important social, psychological, and physical skills and   abilities are developed and reinforced throughout the program. The curriculum   includes three parts: understanding ourselves, valuing relationships and teamwork and understanding how we connect with and shape the world at large.

The vision of Girls on the Run is  a world where every girl knows and activates her limitless potential and is free to boldly pursue her dreams.

When you drive by Immanuel and the gym Tuesday or Thursday afternoons, make sure you beep your horn for encouragement!

7th & 8th Grade News
Mrs. Jenny Meyers
What a fantastic quarter we've had in the 7th and 8th grade classroom! In ELA, we continue to plug away at improving our reading and writing skills. The students turned-in their ancient Greek mythology papers and are currently putting together a Google Slides presentation to display their research. Starting this week, students will begin reading modified versions of Homer's Iliad (Trojan War) and the Odyssey.

In math, we also continue to improve our skills. During the 4th quarter, the class will study graphing solutions to inequalities, more advanced geometry skills and probability. (Sounds exciting doesn't it, smile.)  Lately, students have been given more class time to complete their math homework. This ensures all kids finish their math AND receive help if needed.

Finally, congratulations to Meghan Hurtgen for winning the Watertown American Legion Post 7th and 8th grade essay contest. Her essay titled "Guarding the Constitution" is now being judged at the divisional level. Way to go Meghan!!!

Thank you to everyone for making Lebanon Lutheran such a spectacular school!

Take care,
Mrs. Meyers

5th & 6th Grade News
Ms. Pam Bartee

The Overture Center is a spectacular venue to see any production.  We were so fortunate to go there once again to see "Drumline".  The dancing and instrumental skills performed by this group were very impressive.  Any acrophobics may beg to differ as they were white-knuckled and sweating up there in the TOP row.

The 5th and 6th graders once again spent time volunteering at the community meal, "Loaves & Fishes" at the Moravian church in Watertown.  It's a lot of fun and a lot of good food!

While 3rd and 4th graders are studying simple machines and forces in science, it was easy to demonstrate the use of lever and fulcrum.  Helena was able to lift two Bridgham boys with one hand!

How's everyone's NCAA bracket doing? In the 5th & 6th grade room, Adam's in the lead with 47 correct picks, Carsten's in second with 45, followed by Casey with 43. Go Badgers!!

3rd & 4th Grade News
Mrs. Jennie Berken
This past month the 3 rd and 4 th graders were busy practicing their skit for Grandparents Day. While practicing that, they were learning about similes and came up with their own for grandparents. They all had a lot of fun with it and there were many giggles with some of them. Thank you to all the Grandparents who joined us in the classroom. The students were busy making a cross craft with them, doing word searches, making as many words they could with the words
Leprechaun and  St. Patrick's Day , and posing for our photo booth.

Our class had fun writing a "Roll a Story." They had to roll dice to determine what they were going to write about. For example, if they rolled a 2 that gave them the setting of the story, and if they rolled a 6, that told them the character for their story. All of the stories were very creative and the students used many of the skills they have been learning all year long. Most of our writing in class, and on homework is being done in cursive these days. I'm very impressed with how neat their cursive is becoming!

Also, this past month the K-8 went on a field trip to see Drumline. Even though our seats were in the nose bleeds, the class still enjoyed the performance.

Lastly, I want to congratulate the 3 students who participated in the Spelling Bee this year. There were 15 participants and Allison took, 4th, Hailey took 6th (we think) and Brody took 8th (we think). I'm so proud of all three of them for representing our school! Thank you to Addie and Helena for being alternates and studying as well.

1st & 2nd Grade News
Mrs. Kathy Fortlage

"The Month of March is Marching in...."
March was another month of "holidays" for first and second grade! We began the month with Ash Wednesday and the beginning of Lent. We went to chapel where Pastor Bergelin applied ashes to our foreheads as a remembrance of the dust from which we were made.  In our classroom, our morning devotions focus on the Passion Story from Palm Sunday to Easter. Each day we have an object related to part of the Passion Story, such as a rock, palms, a torch, etc.  The children also have a picture of the object to color and take home to help remember the parts of the story.

On Friday, March 3, we celebrated the wonderful author Dr. Seuss. The children love his rhyming stories and made up words. We learned that Dr. Seuss's real name is Theodor Geisel and he also use the pen name Theo Lesieg. Did you know that Dr. Seuss wrote "Green Eggs and Ham" on a bet? He used only 50 different words in that book! (And we counted them!)

On Thursday, March 9, we celebrated No Books Day through the Watertown Daily Times. We used the newspaper for all or our subjects that day - from reading a story, putting words in ABC order, to graphing the weather! We are also reading the chapter book "Opal and the Secret Code" in the newspaper now for our snack time. We are learning about sign language as well as deafness. The children are learning how to write a chapter summary too!

On Friday, March 17, we celebrated St. Patrick's day with our grandparents! We played two money games, made Lord's Prayer bracelets for our grandparents, read our Poetry Binders and book boxes, and much more! The children and grandparents had a wonderful day!

Kindergarten News
Mrs. Kiki Damrow
Hello from the Kindergarten Room-

March came in like a lion with lots of snow and cold weather. We are hoping for a nice ending to the month. We have worked on learning about tens and ones and big numbers up to 99!  We are also getting better at our addition and subtraction!

We had fun learning our Irish dance for Grandparent's Day! We want to practice everyday! We enjoyed having our Grandparents in our classroom for the morning! We planted sunflower seeds and made a penny cross for them. We danced a jig and shook up our Leprechaun dust to make green Leprechaun pudding that the mischievous little guy left for us! We were shocked at the trouble the little guy left for us to clean up! He left glitter everywhere and coins all over the classroom! We never saw him but we'll try and catch him next year!

The past two weeks have been spent reading Curious George books and figuring out how he solves his problems. We have compared several books about George and found he always helps out people in the end! We loved playing Curious George Uno and with the other wonderful things from Tricia Long's enormous collection of Curious George things. Thank you for sharing!

We are learning how to be Fishers of Men like the disciples of Jesus. We are looking at different ways we can be just like Jesus. We can be thankful for all the blessings we have, and we can be caring for all the things God has given us and we can always talk to God through prayer like Jesus did when He was here on Earth.

We are beginning to learn more about the "H" brothers in our reading. These are words that start or end with TH, WH, SH,and CH. We are always reading different books and love reading different books in our book boxes.

I pray that everyone has a restful and rejuvenating Spring Break! Praise the Lord for all He has done!

Blessings,
Mrs. Damrow

We will be reviewing the story of Holy Week and Easter Sunday in religion this month as well as Jesus' Ascension and Pentecost.

We are looking forward to some warm, dry weather in the coming days and hoping to take some trips to Trechel Park as we start to look forward to the end of the school year.

Happy Easter to everyone! Have a safe and happy Easter break.

PreK-3 News
Mrs. Donna Schleicher

Happy spring from PreK3!

PreK3 was very busy during the month of March.  The students explored March weather and referred to the days as "lion" and "lamb" days.  They enjoyed Dr. Seuss Day reading several Dr. Seuss books, making a Cat in the Hat hat and Thing 1 or Thing 2 with their handprint and enjoying a special snack of green eggs, ham and a Cat in the Hat treat.  They were very busy making decorations for the ECC's Spaghetti Dinner Fundraiser and St. Patrick's Day/Grandparents' Day.  They spent quite a bit of time learning songs for Grandparents' Day as well.

They are looking forward to spring and hopefully some warmer weather.

In April the PreK3 students will be going to Betty Brinn Children's Museum (Thank you LLS PTL!)  In school they will be learning about Jesus' death and resurrection, baby animals, flowers/plants and bugs and butterflies.  Other special days in April include PreK Open House (TH, April 6) and Earth Day.

Springtime blessings,
Mrs. Schleicher

Music Notes
Mrs. Kathy Fortlage

On March 2, Kindergarten through 8th grade attended a concert of Drumline Live! at the Overture Center in Madison. For an hour we were entertained by the Drumline crew as they played and danced their way through the history of Historical Black Colleges and how Drumlines began. The music and performance were excellent!

We have just started our research into the Beatles for our spring concert. I was surprised at how many children haven't heard of the Beatles! Our Spring Concert will center around the Beatle's song "All you Need is Love" and God's great love for us.
