Third Grade Connections
February 9th, 2017
|
|
Dear Third
Grade Families,
Last Friday's successful field trip to the coastside bluffs opened up a new area of focus. Led by Hilary Stamper and supported by Coastside Land Trust, students explored the wetlands located on the Wavecrest property. They observed several puddles, drew details from small areas, and even caught sight of several frogs.
Third
Graders also
conducted research at school to learn about what frogs need to survive.
Students
will make several more trips to this area to study this habitat and learn ways to help the frogs who live there.
A big "Thank You" to the parents who accompanied us on this excursion. We appreciate your time, especially on such short notice. It's amazing to watch these scientists in action!
Sincerely,
Your Third
Grade Team
Kathe Bybee and Jen Guevara

What We Have Been Learning
|
|
Reading/Writing
During Readers' Workshop, students have been reading, discussing, and answering focused questions on the setting, plot, characters, and connections with each chapter of
Sarah, Plain & Tall.
In Writers' Workshop, students have conferenced with peers and their teacher to revise their Passion Story to make sure it includes a strong topic sentence, supporting details, explanations, and a conclusion. Students will continue to practice these skills throughout the year with each writing piece. The children have also been enjoying finding and practicing different word patterns for the "oo" sound.
|
|
Math
In Math, classes covered real life word problems using the bar model method. This is a powerful way to visually represent information. We hope you enjoyed watching the YouTube video about bar modeling and enhanced your knowledge too. After this unit, students will begin exploring the concepts of multiplication and division.

Science/Character Education
As we gear up for our next science
unit,
Astronomy, please check your calendars to see if you can join us on our next field trip to Chabot Space Center- March 15th. We will be sending out
Track it Forward for this trip, as well as for our Valentine's and Chocolate Literature study celebration on February 14th.

Talking with your child is the best way to support classroom learning. The following questions can help you get started.
- If Mrs. Guevara's class found 2,856 tadpoles and Mrs. Bybee found 2,769. What is the difference of tadpoles found? How mny tadpoles did both classes find? Have them demonstrate with a Bar Model. They can do it.
- What is the difference between the sound in "good" and "shoot"?
- Why do we have seasons?
- What does the Earth orbit around? Where does the Earth rise and set?
- How did your child fill someone's bucket this week?
|
|
- Thank you for supporting your child with reading daily and signing their planner!
- It would help improve recall of addition and subtraction facts to practice at home regularly.

The timing works out perfectly in Third Grade as we will start our Chocolate/Beverly Cleary Literature Study. What better way to start than with some chocolate and reading? For the Valentine exchange, students may bring cards for one class or both. They also need to bring some kind of container to keep their goodies. In the past, students have decorated boxes or something else substantial and brought them to school on the day of our celebration.
