A Note From Your Second Grade Teachers
Second Grade Connections
February 9th, 2017
Dear Second  Grade  Families,

Our students are busy thinking about the world beyond Half Moon Bay by embarking on learning how to read a world map and globe. We have been asking: what do ALL people need in order to survive and be happy? We have been reflecting on our own needs, wants and traditions. We have been wondering how these might be similar to the needs, wants and traditions of people who live in different parts of the world. We will spend the next few weeks investigating the word "Culture" and defining what it means to us.

Subtraction is still the name of the game during Math time. We are also introducing bar models as tools to compare quantities when solving addition and subtraction problems.  Reading circles, journal writing and learning the different patterns for spelling long vowel words through word studies and word sorts keeps us busy during our Language Arts time.

We are writing friendly letters to our Super Star on a weekly basis. This is a fun and special way to honor each class member's uniqueness. So far, we have learned all about our Super Stars: Elliot, Susie, Finley, and Colton. It is a joy to have the Super Stars share more about themselves and so enjoyable for students to appreciate them through letter writing.

Sincerely,

Your Second  Grade  Team
Rosalie Simrock, Debra Christian, Sherri Trigueiro & Vienna Klingele

What We Have Been Up To...
Ask Your Child...

Talking with your child is the best way to support classroom learning. The following questions can help you get started.

  • What do all people need in order to survive and be happy?
  • How many continents are there on our world map? Can you name them?
  • What is something you learned about this week's Super Star?

Important Reminder
Second Grade is Nut Free!
As a reminder, we have children in Ms. Christian's class with severe nut allergies. In an effort to be safe and as inclusive as possible, please send nut free snacks to school. If you are bringing any snacks to share with the class or grade level, please give advanced notice so that we can provide an alternative snack. We will need to provide an alternative unless the food brought in is prepackaged and labeled. Thank you for helping to keep everyone safe and healthy in second grade.
