What We Have Been Learning

Social Studies
- Students have put their map skills to use by constructing maps of their colonies.
- Each colony had to create a flag and explain what the symbols represent.
- We have been practicing our map skills.

Writer's Workshop
- Students have created catchy ways to hook their reader.
- They have also added effective transition words and phrases.

Keyboarding Without Tears
- We use this program to become better keyboarders. The program is engaging AND educational.
- The students also learn appropriate posture and finger placement, all while learning cool facts too!

FRACTIONS:

Why do we learn fractions this way?
Last week, Kate Fothergill was at home baking. She only wanted 1/2 the recipe. Hmmm, how does one find half of 3/4 C? Kate knew. She had the image of fraction bars in her head that showed 1/2 of 1/4 is 1/8. She knew that she had 1/8 3 times, which brought her back to 1/4 + 1/8. When asked if she had a 1/8 measuring cup, she replied, "No, I just used 1/2 of the 1/4 C.
No pencil, paper or finding common denominators necessary --just the confidence and ability to solve a real world problem.
You can help your child with fractions by encouraging them to draw pictures, use their fraction strips, and making yummy recipes. Please refrain from jumping to common denominators and easy tricks, while we build this essential understanding.
Science
To better understand the Periodic Table, each child chose an element to research and will personify the element in both a written piece and a sculpture. Imagine haughty gold, or mischievous mercury. (The only HW will be work that is not completed in class.)

Talking with your child is the best way to support classroom learning. The following questions can help you get started.
- If everyone at the dinner table gets 1/4 of a brownie for dessert, how many brownies will we need? Change the fraction to 3/4 or 5/8. Figure it out as a family.
- What if each adult gets 1/2 and each child gets 3/4? How many brownies will you need?
Ask your child about the characters in their book:
- Who is the main character? What are they like?
- What are some traits of the main character? Where did you find evidence of this in the story?
- How has your character changed?
- What is the problem the character is facing?
- How does your character add to the story?
- Have you made a connection with any of the characters?
Your child should be reading for 30 minutes each day!

Essay-palooza!

Come celebrate with the Fourth and Fifth graders the publishing of their essays! Students will showcase their essays in a variety of ways, including soapbox presentations, a listening station with pre-recorded podcasts, and a gallery display of vision boards.
Sweetheart Dance

Fourth and Fifth Grade teachers will be administering the CTP-4 tests published by ERB next week from
Tuesday, February 14th through
Friday, February 17th.
To help balance testing across the four days and prevent student fatigue, teachers will administer two subtests each day.
The fifth-grade testing window will be in the morning and
the fourth-grade testing window will be in the afternoon.
Testing windows are carefully designed to provide a physical activity break and time to eat between sub-tests. Due to the class time needed to administer tests, no make-up test sessions will be offered. Any missed sub-tests will simply be omitted from the final test report.
Sea Crest utilizes the CTP-4 tests as a diagnostic tool to analyze programmatic strengths and needs, guide instruction, measure long-term student growth, and provide your child with practice and experience in taking similar reasoning/achievement style tests (such as the ISEE and the SAT).
It is important to remember that this test represents only one way to measure student knowledge and ability. It should be viewed as only a small part of your child's broader academic profile.

How you can help your child prepare for testing:
- Ensure your child gets plenty of sleep each night.
- Ensure he or she eats a healthy, protein-rich breakfast, and pack a robust snack, and lunch to promote focus and stamina.
- Encourage your child to bring a bottle of water to testing.
- Avoid emotional conflicts before school by keeping the morning routine calm.
- Be encouraging, but avoid placing any unnecessary stress or pressure on your child. Teachers will be asking students to simply try and do their best, and we encourage families to do the same.
- Offer plenty of opportunities for your child to run, play, and decompress each evening.

The fifth grade students are cast as the whimsical
Whos from Whoville
. Your child is asked to wear a
brightly colored stripe shirt and solid color pants
or
brightly striped dress and solid color leggings
with
a contrasting brightly colored pair of sneakers
(Converse, Vans, etc.) on the evening of the performance.
Children may choose which color to wear but
please avoid neutral colors, such as black, brown, gray, white or tan. Other costume items will be provided by the school.
