Letter from the Artistic Director

John Steinbeck's award-winning  Of Mice and Men is currently on the Rep's Mainstage and runs for two weeks. Tickets are going fast, so order now if you don't want to miss this show, a winner of the Drama Critics' Circle Award for Best Play.

First and foremost, this letter lands in your mailbox between weekends of an exciting Mainstage production, and I want to urge you to catch it before it's gone. You have four more chances to see Of Mice and Men - Thursday April 6th, Friday April 7th, Saturday April 8th, all at 8:00 pm; and Sunday April 9th at 2:30 pm. Sonia Perez directs a superb ensemble in this American classic.

And to close out our 84th Mainstage Season, we go from the sublime to the sublimely ridiculous with A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum. This hysterical and unforgettable musical has non-stop laughs and a winning score by Stephen Sondheim. Directed by Amy Spaulding-Heuring, the show runs from June 2nd to the 18th, and tickets are going fast.

As summer approaches, our focus shifts more to education and we turn the theatre and our resources over to the young ones. Auditions for our teen production of Hairspray will be held on April 11th & 12th, and our Young Rep production of Law & Order: Fairy Tale Unit runs April 28th, 29th, and 30th. It's not too early to be thinking about Rep Ed summer camps, weeklong intensives that run from 9:00 am - 3:00 pm Monday to Friday, and are very reasonably priced. The week of June 26th will be "Hip Hop Broadway," the week of July 17th "Enchanted Theatre," and the week of July 24th zombies invade the theatre for "Broadway Apocalypse." Look for more youth programming in upcoming REPorters, or on our user-friendly website  www.toledorep.org.

It's our commitment to keep bringing you both quality productions and diverse opportunities to work both back- and onstage, and to be responsive to your theatrical aspirations and wishes. Contact us with any ideas that you have; we'd love to hear them!

Finally, as we head into our 85th season, please consider sponsorship of the season or an upcoming Rep production. It's a great way to show your support for local theatre and/or promote your business. We offer various levels of patronage and, of course, it's tax deductible.

See you at the theatre,

Law and Order: Fairy Tale Unit
by Jonathan Rand

Directed by  Irina Zaurov

April 28 & 29 at 7:00 pm
April 30 at 2:30 pm

This hilarious one-act play parodies the long-running television series Law and Order. In the fairy tale criminal justice system, the characters from fairy tales and nursery rhymes are represented by two separate yet equally ridiculous groups: the fairy tale police who investigate fairy tale crime and the fairy tale district attorneys who prosecute the fairy tale offenders. These are their stories.

Human Error

Winner of the 2016 Ohio Arts Council Award for Individual Excellence.

A Christmas Carol
by Charles Dickens, revised by David Jex and Debra Ross Calabrese
December 1, 2 & 3, 2017

Ripcord

January 12, 13, 19, 20, 21, 25, 26, 27 & 28. 2018

A biting new comedy from Pulitzer Prize-winning author David LindsayAbaire. The sunny room on an upper floor is prime real estate in the Bristol Place Senior Living Facility, so when the cantankerous Abby is forced to share her quarters with new-arrival Marilyn, she has no choice but to get rid of the infuriatingly chipper woman by any means necessary. A seemingly harmless bet between the old women quickly escalates into a dangerous game of one-upmanship that reveals not just the tenacity of these worthy opponents, but also deeper truths that each would rather remain hidden.

March 9, 10, 16, 17, 18, 22, 23, 24 & 25, 2018

A moving portrait of British scientist Rosalind Franklin, one of the great female scientists of the twentieth century, and her fervid drive and often overlooked role in the discovery of DNA's double helix structure. This complex tale explores how a group of chemists and biologists raced to map the molecular structure of our genetic code, revealing the unsung achievements of this trail-blazing, fiercely independent woman. Winner of the 2016 WhatsOnStage Award, Photograph 51 is a fascinating play about science, ambition, isolation, the unique challenges of a woman operating in a field dominated by men, and the race for greatness.

Sweet Charity
by Neil Simon, Cy Coleman, & Dorothy Fields
June 1, 2, 8, 9, 10, 14, 15, 16 & 17, 2018

Have you ever known a girl who wanted something so badly that she tried too hard to get it? Meet Sweet Charity, who sings, dances, laughs and cries her way through romances. Her world is the all too real world of Times Square, and the people who pass through are as deceptively charming a group as ever swept across any stage. With a book by the king of comedy Neil Simon, this five-time Tony Award winner includes the iconic musical numbers "Big Spender", "If My Friends Could See Me Now", and "I'm a Brass Band".

Winner of three Tony Awards in 2011 and the basis of an Emmy Award-winning HBO film adaptation in 2014.

The Children's Hour
by Lillian Hellman
April 13 & 14, 2018

Hellman's trailblazing 1934 drama is set in an all-girls boarding school run by two best friends, Karen and Martha. The accusation proceeds to destroy the women's careers, relationships and lives.

The Most Fabulous Story Ever Told
