Letter from the Artistic Director
John Steinbeck's award-winning
Of Mice and Men
is currently on the Rep's Mainstage and runs for two weeks. Tickets are going fast, so order now if you don't want to miss this show, a winner of the Drama Critics' Circle Award for Best Play.
First and foremost, this letter lands in your mailbox between weekends of an exciting Mainstage production, and I want to urge you to catch it before it's gone. You have four more chances to see
Of Mice and Men - Thursday April 6th, Friday April 7th, Saturday April 8th, all at 8:00 pm; and Sunday April 9th at 2:30 pm. Sonia Perez directs a superb ensemble in this American classic.
And to close out our 84th Mainstage Season, we go from the sublime to the sublimely ridiculous with
A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum. This hysterical and unforgettable musical has non-stop laughs and a winning score by Stephen Sondheim. Directed by Amy Spaulding-Heuring, the show runs from June 2nd to the 18th, and tickets are going fast.
As summer approaches, our focus shifts more to education and we turn the theatre and our resources over to the young ones. Auditions for our teen production of
Hairspray will be held on April 11th & 12th, and our Young Rep production of
Law & Order: Fairy Tale Unit runs April 28th, 29th, and 30th. It's not too early to be thinking about Rep Ed summer camps, weeklong intensives that run from 9:00 am - 3:00 pm Monday to Friday, and are very reasonably priced. The week of June 26th will be "Hip Hop Broadway," the week of July 17th "Enchanted Theatre," and the week of July 24th zombies invade the theatre for "Broadway Apocalypse." In the fairy tale criminal justice system, the characters from fairy tales and nursery rhymes are represented by two separate yet equally ridiculous groups: the fairy tale police who investigate fairy tale crime and the fairy tale district attorneys who prosecute the fairy tale offenders. These are their stories.

Hairspray, winner of eight Tony Awards including Best Musical, tells the story of a quirky, energetic, teenage Tracy Turnblad, who has one dream - to dance on "The Corny Collins Show." When her dream comes true, Tracy is transformed from social outcast to sudden star. She must use her newfound power to dethrone the reigning Teen Queen, win the affections of heartthrob Link Larkin and integrate a TV network.

Three three-hour classes will cover the fundamentals of playwriting - character, setting, conflict, plots, stakes, etc. - with ample time for students to write and share works-in-progress. During the fourth and final session, students will have a chance to work with adult actors interpreting their works and then hear their plays presented in a public reading.
Classes are held Saturday mornings at the 10th Street Theatre, starting promptly at
9:00 am and finishing at noon.
Please drop off and pick up your students on time.

About the Instructor: Dave DeChristopher
Dave is an an actor, director, teacher, playwright with nine published plays, and author of
The Force, a series of spy novels. Before leaving for New York City in 1980 to establish his career in professional theater, the Toledo native, a 1971 graduate of St. John's Jesuit High School who earned a degree from Washington & Lee University, spent the late 1970s in Toledo, teaching and directing.
During his 24 years in New York, his career included being a company member and later Artistic Director of the Greenwood Theater Company, a theatre-in-education company, and a member of the resident acting company of the Castillo Theatre. He toured the United States and Israel as a member of the Jewish Repertory Theatre for Young Audiences and performed in regional and stock theater.
He is a member of Actors' Equity Association and the Dramatists Guild. Dave is the current Artistic Director at the Toledo Repertoire Theatre
and teaches the International Baccalaureate theater curriculum and creative writing at Notre Dame Academy, where he also is the assistant speech coach.

Anita Crane
has been involved in 24 shows at the Rep since 1999. She has stage managed 12 main stage productions, including last year's

A Toledo native, Anita works as an application developer at The University of Toledo. She is currently writing her first novel, about a stage manager at a Midwestern community theater. There are lots of stories about performers, she says, but not enough about the crew. She is proud to be a part of this community, and grateful for the many wonderful relationships and experiences she has gained over the years.

Education is one of the central aspects of our mission here at the Toledo Rep and we are always looking for new instructors to include in our program. If you have any interest in being a part of our education program, please let us know! A background in teaching is desired, although not necessarily required. We are looking for people experienced in one or more of the many aspects of theatre, with a passion and desire to share those experiences and skills with others. Our program includes classes, workshops and camps for children, teens and adults.
