APRIL 2017

DID YOU KNOW?

Prom season is rapidly approaching - Hang Up And Drive can help you keep your students safe.

Putnam/Northern Westchester BOCES has a longstanding relationship with Hang Up And Drive.  Jacy Good and Steve Johnson are public speakers and advocates for cell-free roads.  In 2008, their lives were changed forever when a distracted driver caused a wreck that took the lives of Jacy's two parents and left Jacy partially paralyzed.  Since Jacy's miraculous recovery, they have worked tirelessly to educate the public about the dangers of distracted driving.  Let them bring "Hang Up And Drive" to your school.

AHERA AUDITS

The New York State Department of Labor is traversing the state performing AHERA compliance audits.  They have made presentations to the SBGA and ASESHP regarding the requirements and the process for the audit.  They expect to increase the number of audits performed over last year.

Louis Berger works as a consultant under CoSER 698.110 and can help you if you are out of compliance.  They perform both Triennial and 6 month AHERA inspections, and can work with you on documentation.

Our department can provide AHERA Awareness training to custodial and maintenance staff.  This training is required annually.

MINUTES OF THE REGIONAL SAFETY COMMITTEE

On March 21, 2017, members and guests of the Regional Safety Committee (RSC), which is made up of representatives of our PNW BOCES participating districts, benefited by two speakers from the New York State Police Troop K. The program was held in the School Services Building of PNW BOCES.

The first presentation was a tabletop exercise facilitated by Trooper Kristi Wilson and Michael Sellet, Regional Safety Coordinator. This exercise was written by the New York State Police using a video by the FBI titled,"The Coming Storm." Clips of the video were shown followed by group discussion of the incidents portrayed.  The program was presented to the RSC as a pilot training program for our area.  Regional Safety Services plans to offer this opportunity again in the early fall.

During the second half of the meeting, our members and guests learned about drugs. Trooper Stephanie Higgins presented an interesting program on drug awareness and drug impairment recognition. Trooper Higgins is a Drug Recognition Expert. According to their web page, "The State Police has more than 50 Drug Recognition Experts (DREs). DREs are specially trained troopers whose diagnostic skills and knowledge of drug signs and symptoms enable them to make highly accurate assessments of persons who may be under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol.  Because drug impairment can be a factor in school crisis, DREs can, upon request, provide drug recognition awareness training as a community resource that includes information on strategies for handling potentially violent drug-impaired students and assistance in developing proactive school district policies on drug impairment."

Trooper Higgins has been on the force for 14 years.  She describes herself as passionate about drug awareness education.  Her vast knowledge in current trends in drug abuse was eye opening. More and more synthetic drugs are coming into our area. A surprising fact to many of the attendees is that marijuana contains up to 95% more THC than it did back in the '60's.  THC is the active ingredient in marijuana. The best defense against illicit drug use in our schools is adults who are knowledgeable in the signs of drug use.

Trooper Higgins also shared websites that can be used to identify pills and other drugs:

We would like to hear from you. Would your district be interested in attending the program listed above in the early fall?
KUDOS TO THE GARRISON UFSD

At its March 28 school board meeting, the Garrison UFSD hosted a panel discussion on the opioid epidemic.  The meeting was facilitated by Michael Sellet, PNW BOCES Regional Safety Coordinator. The panel included representatives from law enforcement, schools and drug treatment and was attended by about 50 area residents.

The program was organized by the school board as a response to the growing drug crisis in our area. This is a problem that has touched every family in the region.

Attendees called for more access to Narcan and to drug treatment facilities.

APRIL IS DISTRACTED DRIVING MONTH
What is distracted driving?
Distracted driving is any activity that could divert a person's attention away from the primary task of driving. All distractions endanger driver, passenger, and bystander safety. These types of distractions include:
  • Texting
  • Using a cell phone or smartphone
  • Eating and drinking
  • Talking to passengers
  • Grooming
  • Reading, including maps
  • Using a navigation system
  • Watching a video
  • Adjusting a radio, CD player, or MP3 player
But, because text messaging requires visual, manual, and cognitive attention from the driver, it is by far the most alarming distraction.

The best way to end distracted driving is to educate all Americans about the danger it poses. On this page, you'll find facts and statistics that are powerfully persuasive. If you don't already think distracted driving is a safety problem, please take a moment to learn more. And, as with everything on Distraction.gov please share these facts with others. Together, we can help save lives.
