City Manager's Desk

The City of Perry is beginning its fiscal year 2018 operating budget process this month. Departments and agencies have presented their requests and I have reviewed each, examined income and made my recommendations. Mayor and Council, in a series of public meetings, will review the recommended budget; hear from the departments, outside organizations, and public concerning the budget. The official public hearing will be June 6, 2017 at 6:00 p.m. at City Hall. After receiving input, Council will adopt a budget, which may or may not be the recommended budget, at its June 20, 2017 meeting.

The operating budget is the blueprint for how public monies are spent, what is a priority, and what are the reserve limits. Data is available online. I urge all citizens to follow the process and provide input. It is your community!

Tram Tours
Perry Main Street will host free tram tours of historic downtown on Thursday, April 27, and Tuesday, May 23.

The Perry Main Street Program is organizing the tours in observance of Historic Preservation Month, which is May. The educational program provided by Ellie Loudermilk will include information about the history of Perry, its residents and its architecture.

The route will feature numerous historic buildings in downtown, including the one-room Springhill School, the New Perry Hotel, the Armory building that now houses the Perry Arts Center, the former Houston County Bank and the tin-front building that was once the Toomer Funeral Home. The tour will conclude with a brief visit at the Perry Area Historical Society's Museum.
The tram tour will begin at and return to the First Baptist Church parking lot on Main Street. Tours will start promptly at 5:30 p.m.

Seating per tour is limited to 20 on a first-come, first-served basis.

Because there has been an overwhelming response for the tram tours over the last three years, participants are required to register in advance and to arrive at the church parking lot by 5:15 p.m.

Thursday, May 25, is a backup tour date in case of inclement weather.

To register or for more information, contact Perry Main Street Coordinator Catherine Edgemon at (478) 988-2758.

Spring Safety Tips
  • When you do your spring cleaning, dispose of old cans of paint and thinners and accumulated newspapers and magazines. Check local newspapers for times and locations to drop off household hazardous materials.
  • When you clean windows check them for ease of opening as you may need them as a means of exit in case of fire.
  • Change the battery in your smoke alarms and perform maintenance such as cleaning and dusting as per manufacturer's instructions. Remember proper placement of smoke alarms, with at least one on every level.
  • Review and practice your home escape plan.
  • Inspect and clean dust from the covers of your carbon monoxide alarms.
  • Replace or clean your furnace filter. A dirty filter can lower the efficiency of the heating/cooling system, increase heating costs and cause fires.
  • Clean the kitchen exhaust hood and air filter. Keeping this clean of cooking grease will help keep a stove-top fire from spreading.
  • Always have a multi-purpose fire extinguisher accessible. Make sure it is Underwriters Laboratories (UL) listed or Factory Mutual (FM) approved. Check the gauges to make sure they are charged and ready to use.
  • Check your water heater. If you have a gas-fired water heater, check to make sure it is venting properly. Light a match next to the vent and wave it out (don't blow it out). See if the smoke is pulled up into the vent. If it isn't, have a professional inspect and repair it. Otherwise, carbon monoxide and other combustibles can build up in the home.
  • Clean the clothes dryer exhaust duct, damper and space under the dryer. Poor maintenance allows lint to build up in the exhaust duct and cause fire.
  • Replace all extension cords that have become brittle, worn or damaged. Exposed wires may cause arcing, which will produce heat and can start a fire. Keep appliances and their power cords away from water or a heat source because this will damage the cord's insulation.
