Insights and updates from Gates Healthcare Associates

OUT OF THE GATES

Every March I start a new round of spring cleaning - well, I at least feel compelled to start spring cleaning while still emerging from the deep freeze of winter. First, I spend time drawing up a list of priorities and projects so that I have a spring cleaning game plan in place and feel prepared and organized before taking action.

Healthcare organizations such as pharmacies, hospitals, medical practices and health clinics would be wise to do the same with a spring cleaning on compliance, and here are a few priorities that come to mind:
  • State and federal regulations -- Does my business or area of responsibility meet the latest rules? What areas can be tightened up?
  • Standard Operating Procedures -- Do my SOPs ensure the highest quality standards? What can be done to enhance them?
  • Pending guidance -- Am I ready or getting ready for USP <800> standards for hazardous drug handling? They take effect in 2018 but preparations must be made now. Does my entire team comprehend what's required and what's at stake?
The list goes on ... One thing I always do when spring cleaning is to check under the rug -- both literally and figuratively -- because you never really know what's been swept under there until you check.

Best wishes.

Sincerely,
Ernest P. Gates Jr., RPh, FASCP, FIACP, FACA
