Building Our Capacity to Implement Personalized Learning for our Learners

Edina Public Schools believes students must play an active role in what, when, where and how they learn to reach their full potential and be prepared for the dynamic world that awaits them. In Edina Public Schools, personalization affords the learner a degree of voice and choice about what is learned, when it is learned, and how it is learned. Personalization assists learners in identifying paths to master the highest standards possible by encouraging flexibility in learning with regard to time, place, pace and path. It places high value on learner-focused relationships, stimulating growth from dependent to independent learning as a student progresses through their educational experience in Edina Public Schools.

On February 21st,  Jim Rickabaugh, local expert on personalized learning, came to Edina to support our middle school staff in their work on providing personalized learning for our students. Our teachers spent time together learning and working on ways to further implement personalized learning in our classrooms. We are excited about the opportunities we are providing for our students relative to this effort and look forward to growing our capacity further in the weeks and months ahead to effectively implement these practices for our learners.

You can help your child have a positive experience on these assessments by:
  • Seeing that your child is well rested during the testing period.
  • Making sure your child has a good breakfast every day, especially during the testing period.
  • Not scheduling appointments that would take your child out of school during the testing period.
  • Helping your child to be confident.  Let him/her know that you know that he/she will do his/her best and that no one is expected to get every answer correct.
  • Being sure he/she has the appropriate equipment; i.e., several No.2 pencils that are not too sharp, a good separate eraser and comfortable clothing.
  • Keeping your child out of school if he/she is truly ill during the testing period.
If you have questions regarding these upcoming assessments, please contact Tami Jo Cook at 952-848-4446 or [email protected]

Community Engagement: Race and Equity
Parents and community members have the opportunity to participate in our commitment to advance our race and equity conversations into the community.  This is another effort to help our community engage as a community about community.  The first gathering is set for January 23 in the Normandale Auditorium.  Here is the webpage, which includes the following highlights:
"A Good Time for the Truth: Race in Minnesota," is a collection edited by local author Sun Yung Shin of 16 essays by diverse Minnesota writers.  It will be the subject of three of the sessions.  Each will feature a panel of essay writers, with an opportunity for facilitated discussion reflecting on their stories and how they impact the Edina community.
