First Annual Lovejoy Visual Arts Portrait Show
Opening Reception: March 7th
It is a pleasure to invite you and your family to attend the 1st Annual Lovejoy Visual Arts Portrait Show in the Lovejoy High School Art Gallery on March 7th from 6:00 - 8:00 PM. If you were unable to attend the Fine Arts Festival in December, the new gallery at the high school was unveiled with an inaugural K-12 Evolution show, focusing on the experience and growth students take on as a part of the art community in Lovejoy ISD. The exhibition was an incredible showcase of every age group and was curated by a Lovejoy senior. Following this idea of transformation in our students' artistic language and personal voice from kindergarten to 12th grade, the next opening is a showcase of how our young artists represent themselves and others through portraiture. The concept of identity, both through representation and abstraction, is a core thread in every Lovejoy art studio, and is explored through a plethora of media and art forms. This exhibition celebrates the range of approaches used to explore identity at all age levels, and is a spectacular body of work to begin the tradition of a yearly Portrait Show.
Please join us in the Lovejoy High School Art Gallery on Tuesday, March 7th to celebrate the work of some of Lovejoy's many fine artists. If you are unable to attend the opening reception, the show will be open daily during school hours from March 6th - April 7th.
Spring Star Party - Postponed
The Spring Star Party at Puster Elementary scheduled for March 6 has been postponed until Friday, March 10 due to weather predictions. Viewing will begin at 6:30 PM and end at approximately 8:30 PM. The Lovejoy community is invited to attend. Parking will be available in the front parking lot. You may enter through the front doors where signs will direct you to the courtyard and into the back parking lot where viewing will take place. Access to the back parking long will not be available via the driveway.
LHS Percussion Concert
The Annual LISD Percussion Concert will be on Wednesday, March 8th in the LHS Auditorium at 7 PM. Admission is free and open to the public. We will be playing classical and contemporary music ranging from Joplin style ragtime music to heavy metal music. This is the highlight of the year for these students and they would love to see you there!
Flats for Bats
Lovejoy Baseball has begun their annual flower sale. Please help support Lovejoy Baseball and buy your spring flowers from one of the high school players. Flowers will be delivered to your house on April 8th. Find any Lovejoy Baseball player and place your order or email

Give Glasses and Give the Gift of Sight
LHS Junior Eleise Brooks will be assisting her father, Dr. Dain Brooks, MD, on medical missions to Mexico (March), India (July), and Africa (2018) to help cure the world's blind. Their main focus will be performing cataract surgeries; however, they will also be providing glasses to those in need. You may help by donating new or used glasses. There will be marked boxes available at each campus.

Gifted and Talented Referrals for 2017-2018

Testing will be Saturday, April 8, 22, or 29 for students in grades 1-12. Kindergarten students will be tested during the school day.
A brief information session will review the gifted and talented referral process and services offered in Lovejoy.

Student Recognition
The Prudential Spirit of Community Award
Sophie Herran has been honored for her exemplary volunteer service with a Certificate of Excellence as well as a President's Volunteer Service Award granted on behalf of the President's Council on Service and Civic Participation. This signifies that she is among the top 10 percent of all applicants from across the state. Sophie's volunteer focus is training service dogs in association with "Guide Dogs for the Blind".
LHS Speech and Debate
Ellie Hager has earned the Academic All American award from the National Speech & Debate Association. This coveted award recognizes academic rigor, competitive success and personal excellence. Out of over 141,000 student members, fewer than 500 students earn this award. This places Ellie among the top half of one percent of all student members across the country. This distinguished award recognizes students who have earned the degree of Superior Distinction (a total of 750 or more merit points); achieved rigorous criteria for GPA and/or test score requirements; and demonstrated outstanding character and leadership.
LHS Student Council
LHS StuCo recently attended their District meeting and were awarded the "Sweepstakes" award by TASC. This means the student council met or surpassed the criteria for all 5 categories: Outstanding Student Council, DASH, Energy and Environment, Pride and Patriotism, and Community Service. The students earned points in these categories by hosting various events like Homecoming, Founder's Day, Shattered Dreams, Blood Drives, Kids against Hunger, Teacher Appreciation gifts and many other projects.
LHS Journalism
The Red Ledger student newspaper received seven digital Gold Circle awards from the Columbia Scholastic Press Association in New York City. Given since 1984, the Gold Circles are a national journalism competition for
media "published in schools or colleges throughout the United States and in overseas schools following an American plan of education." The awards recognize "superior work," placing students first, second, third or with a certificate of merit in various categories. According to CSPA, in recent years, only about 1,200 awards have been given out from more than 15,000 entries.

LHS Hockey
Lovejoy's Varsity hockey team wrapped up the regular season with a 9-3 win over Jesuit. They are playoff bound! Senior Bryce Branch, the captain, led the Leopards in both goals and assists, while sophomores Ryan Raineri and Cyrus Mortazavi also had hat tricks. Sophomore Andy Pottinger finished the regular season with 4 shutouts. Lovejoy with face Richardson/Rockwall in the playoffs on Tuesday, March 21 at 7pm in Euless.
LHS Speech & Debate
The following students will be participating at the Texas Forensic Association State Speech & Debate Tournament starting this Thursday, March 9th - Saturday, March 11th, which will be held this year at Plano West High School. **Grant Dennis & Anna Rouse tied for 2nd place both earning a $200 scholarship. Ellie Hager took first earning a scholarship for $500.
**Ellie was then eligible to participate in the District Rotary Speech Contest which took place this Saturday. She took 2nd place in the district earning an additional $750 scholarship. Congrats Ellie!
LHS Bowling
Congratulations to the Girls Varsity team!! They competed in the regional tournament last weekend and finished in 3rd place, advancing the team to the State Tournament. This is the 3rd year in a row that the Lady Leopards have advanced to state...WELL DONE LADIES!!!
This year's state bowling tournament will be held at City View Lanes, 6601 Oakmont Blvd, Fort Worth, 76132 on Sunday, March 26th at 8:30am.

Percussion
This weekend, the LHS and WSMS Percussionists traveled to Forney HS to compete in the North Texas Percussion Festival. Lovejoy High School percussionists placed 5th, 7th, and 8th place out of the 5A schools with their pieces Fandango 13, Teamwork, and Sharpened Stick. Willow Springs Middle School percussionists placed 2

place out of the 2C middle schools with their pieces Log Cabin Blues, Mercury Rising, and Fortress of the Prince.

LHS Computer Science
The computer science team traveled to Round Rock, Texas to compete in Hewlett Packard's Code Wars programming competition. LHS took two advanced and one novice team. Your LHS Novice team took first place. Please congratulate these students on a job well done!

LHS Boys Soccer
The JV boys went 2-0 this past week with wins over Wylie East and North Forney to claim the JV District Championship!
The varsity boys also went 2-0 this past week with wins over Wylie East and North Forney. The varsity boys have an opportunity to also win a district championship on Tuesday with a win over Mesquite Poteet!

LHS Boys Powerlifting - Regionals
The following members of the boys' Powerlifting team traveled to Keller Central High School this past Saturday and gave a great showing competing against the top lifters in the region:

James Ayers placed 5th while acquiring most outstanding squat and bench press lifter.
Cade Ashley placed 3rd in the region also acquiring most outstanding bench press.
LHS Softball
The Leopards attended the McKinney ISD Tournament this past weekend and went 5-0. They defeated: 6A McKinney, 4A Paris North Lamar, 5A Red Oak, 5A Greenville, & 5A Frisco Reedy. Throughout the weekend, the Leopards scored 64 runs while only allowing 7!
This is the first week of play in District 15-5A. The Leopards will travel to Highland Park on Tuesday Night, and then will host their first HOME GAME of the year on Friday. They will play host to the West Mesquite Wranglers at 5:30 & 7:00.
LHS Theatre- UIL One Act Play
Congratulations to the cast and crew of this year's UIL One Act Play entry, Wit by Margaret Edson for advancing on to Bi-District!
In addition to advancing, the team earned the top placement from all three judges and the following awards:

Chemistry Olympiad
Every year, the DFW chapter of the American Chemical Society sponsors an Olympiad in order to identify the top chemistry students in the metroplex. The area's top chemistry students gather at UTA and UNT to take a grueling, 60-question exam in hopes of qualifying to go sit for the National-level exam. From this pool of students nationwide, the top 20 will ultimately be selected in represent the USA in the International Chemistry Olympiad in Thailand this summer.
This past weekend, the LHS AP Chemistry students traveled to UTA to take their shot at advancing to the national exam. Students will be anxiously awaiting results over the next couple of weeks, but all did a great job in preparation.
LHS Varsity Girls' Golf
The Varsity Girls Golf team competed in the "Lady Pirate Classic" this weekend in Granbury. We were very pleased with the overall finish of 7th out of 15 teams. The competition there was as tough as any tournament we have played. The girls finished Friday with a team total 366, good for 7th, and held the same position on Saturday with a team total 381. Total individual scores:

Congrats to both the JV Black and Varsity Baseball teams on winning the tournaments that they played in over the weekend.
The JV Black remained undefeated with an 8-0 record as they took 1st place in the McKinney North JV tournament. The Black team got strong pitching performances from Jordan Yoder, Will Strickland, Cade Smitherman, and Teagan Carlock.
The Varsity Baseball team won the Jesuit Classic over the weekend with a 5-1 record. They had big wins over defending State Champion Jesuit Thursday night 5-3 and beat perennial power Rockwall on Friday 5-1. The Leopards had strong pitching performances from Jacob Eschler, Mason Marsh, Brandon Merrill, Jacob Terwilliger, Hank Harrison, Matt Piccirillo, and Michael Difiore over the weekend.
The JV Red will play in the Little Elm Tournament this week.
The JV Black will head to Denton for the Denton JV Tournament.
Varsity will play in the Frisco Rough Riders Invitational Tournament this week.
LHS Track and Field
The Lovejoy Leopards used a balanced team to win the 2017 Lovejoy Invitational Track and Field meet. The Leopards sprinters, led by Chase Van Wagoner (20 points), scored 67 points. In the field events, Colin Engbrock cleared 14' 4" in the pole vault, raising his own school record. Jahi Rainey won the inaugural Javelin event and led the Leopards in the field events with 22 of the team's 57 field event points. The distance athletes, led by Will Muirhead (14 points), also scored 57 points, highlighted by a 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th place finish in the Steeplechase event. The Leopards 4x400m Relay team (Blake Pfaff, Jake Chamberlin, Jake Iovinelli, and Beau Iovinelli) improved the team's season best time by 11 seconds to complete the scoring of 179 points. Lewisville Hebron finished 2nd with 176 total points.
In the Boys JV division, Whitson Bedell and Michael DesJardins took home gold medals in the 800m and Pole Vault, respectively.
