The Gunpowder Valley Conservancy Honors Dorothy (Dot) Streb

The Heroines of Cromwell Valley Park: Dot Streb (pictured on left) and Lillian Jennifer (right)

Sadly, one of our past board members and the champion of Cromwell Valley Park (CVP), Dorothy (Dot) Streb, passed away Tuesday February 21.  Her Funeral Service was held at Stella Maris this past Friday. Dot initiated the Campaign to Save the Valley that advocated for park land as opposed to development. At our first fundraising event at CVP, 2011, Dot was recognized as the Heroines of the Park along with Lillian Jennifer and Francis Sherwood. The CVP Council placed two Adirondack chairs and a table at the park in honor of the three women champions. Dot was a board member and VP of the Gunpowder Valley Conservancy in the early 90's.  Board meetings were occasionally held at Dot's home on Gunpowder Road in Glen Arm.  Dot leaves behind a wonderful legacy for future generations.  She will always be remembered for her "never give up" strategy, and she was successful. Blessings to her and her wonderful family.

The family has indicated in her obituary in the Sun, in lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Gunpowder Valley Conservancy, referring to the GVC website here.

Party Bay-Wise This Spring

The University of Maryland Extension Master Gardeners developed the  Bay-Wise Maryland Yardstick program to measure how your landscaping choices affect the health
of our state's water and environment.

By compiling at least 36 points (hence the name "yardstick") through a variety of Bay-friendly practices, you earn certification and recognition through this statewide program.

The attractive signs are free
once you earn Bay-Wise certification!

To learn more, attend a free Bay-Wise Certification Party!

Saturday, April 29, 2017: 10 am to noon in Parkville ( Register online )

Sunday, June 11, 2017: 2 to 4 pm in Carney

At these free, friendly, informal gatherings, there will be light refreshments and the opportunity to consult with a Baltimore County Master Gardener, as well as, tour a certified yard for ideas and examples of Bay-Wise practices. Carol Silldorff, GVC's Executive Director, recently certified her property as Bay-Wise with the assistance of Leslie Erickson, a local master gardener, who partners with the GVC to certify Bay-Wise practices!

Update on December 2016 Fish Kill

Some of our Gunpowder watershed residents had an unfortunate surprise over the holidays: 20,000+ dead fish in the Gunpowder and Bird Rivers. Maryland Department of Environment conducted a thorough investigation and recently published their final report .

The results indicate the presence of  Karlodinium veneficum , a toxin-producing saltwater algae not typically found in freshwater. The local fish populations likely died from the combination of karlotoxin and salinity stress, which interfered with their respiratory system. No pollutant discharges were identified.

As a friend of the Gunpowder Valley Conservancy, we know that you already care deeply about the health of our local waterways. One way you can increase your involvement is to attend our next Adopt-a-Stream workshop on May 27th.   During this free training, you will learn how to watch for and report stream hazards.  We can always use more eyes throughout the watershed to protect our creeks, streams, and rivers and the wildlife that depend on them.
