Our Young Professionals held their monthly Happy Hour on February 14th. The Young Professionals Committee was delighted to welcome new and returning attendees to this increasingly popular networking event. Guest represented a variety of industries including tech, social media, banking, project management, corporate housing and law. You may have spotted the massive RSA Cyber Security Conference that was in town last month. This is a subject close to my heart based on my last role.
The UK has a strong heritage in technology. From Charles Babbage and the first programmable computer to Sir Timothy Berners-Lee and the World Wide Web; and from Alan Turing and the team at Bletchley Park, to the important work of GCHQ today, we recognise that whilst the internet has brought many fantastic and very positive changes to our world, there are also those who wish to use it to do us harm. That's why we must be prepared.
The
UK Government's 2015 Strategic Defence and Security Review
classified cyber as a Tier One threat to the country. Just last year, the UK Government announced $2.37 billion of investment in the country's cyber security programme. Last month, we saw the opening of the National Cyber Security Centre by Her Majesty The Queen, to be the authoritative voice on information security in the UK and to bring our cyber expertise together to transform how we tackle cyber security issues.
Additionally, the UK Government is supporting the creation of
two new Cyber Security Innovation Centres and programmes
to further develop our existing talent and drive growth. The UK is also providing for world leading education, training and skills development in cyber security through certified Masters degrees, the establishment of 13 Academic Centres of Excellence in Research, and three Centres for Doctoral training.
And at RSA we supported 8 companies who represent the next generation of cyber security expertise emanating from the UK.
The one key message is that cyber security is not an IT issue, but rather one that could affect any business and you need to take the necessary steps to secure yourselves and your business. Be sure to check out advice from

The BABC Northern California hosted its 6th Annual "Funding, Exits and IPOs" event in Menlo Park on February 22nd 2017. The panel, made up of esteemed Silicon Valley Venture Capitalists and leading fintech journalists, gave their predictions and insights to over 75 guests in attendance.

What Does BEPS Mean for Middle-Market Companies?
During the past year, we've seen several significant developments in furtherance of the Base Erosion and Profit-Shifting (BEPS) agenda promulgated by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and the G20.
There's a common misconception that BEPS only applies to large multinational corporations; however, the reality is that middle market companies that operate internationally will feel the impacts of BEPS just as much as (and in some cases more than) large multinationals.
As we head into 2017, middle market companies need to be aware of these impacts, and, more importantly, they need to be proactive in evaluating their transfer pricing practices in order to establish compliance with these new rules

We've been hearing rumblings about possible legislation moving forward in Sacramento that will give the California Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control ("ABC") more oversight over companies that deliver alcohol products here in California. Last week, we got our first look at
Senate Bill 254
, which had been a mere placeholder since its introduction on February 7 by Senator Portantino. The proposed bill would add Business and Professions Code Section 25513 to the Tied-House Restrictions of the California ABC Act (as well as similar sections in the Code pertaining to tobacco, not covered by this blog post), which would for the first time define a "delivery network company," and would prohibit companies that deliver alcoholic beverages (and/or tobacco products) from delivering these regulated products until receiving ABC approval of their delivery systems and abiding by certain requirements intended to curb access by minors.
