AdvocacyAdvocacy Alert Mental Health Care at Risk!
Coverage for mental health care helps people get treatment when they need it - helping them to stay in school, on the job and in recovery.

But the American Health Care Act (AHCA), Congress' bill to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act, would reduce funding for health coverage - from insurance plans to Medicaid - and put mental health care at risk.

Under the AHCA, 14 million fewer people would be covered by Medicaid.
In the middle of an opioid crisis and the highest suicide rate in 30 years, Congress shouldn't desert its commitment to coverage for mental health and substance use treatment.

Tell Congress that 24 million Americans losing mental health coverage is wrong.

What can you do?
Take action by writing your members of congress and promoting mental health advocacy actions  Fri, Mar 17th-Tue, Mar 21st by using the following  guiding materials.

What's happening to Medicaid?

The American Health Care Act, Congress' bill to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act (ACA), would result in  massive cuts to Medicaid that will affect people with mental illness and families-and law enforcement. On March 13th, the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office (CBO) found that Medicaid would cover 14 million fewer people over the next 10 years. In total, an estimated 24 million more Americans would be uninsured by 2026 if the bill becomes law.

New resource - Medicaid and Mental Illness: What's at Stake for Law Enforcement
Police often serve as the first responders to mental health crises and jails are the largest mental health facilities in many communities. These situations will only get worse if fewer people can get mental health services through Medicaid. To help law enforcement learn what is at stake with proposed reductions to Medicaid in the American Health Care Act, NAMI has developed a new fact sheet about the role of Medicaid in keeping people with mental illness off the streets and out of jails.
