CONNECT, DISCERN AND STRATEGIZE FOR IMMIGRANT AND REFUGEE JUSTICE
Sunday, March 19, 2017, 1-3 p.m. in Nathan Johnson Hall

In the Spring 2017 issue of UU World, Unitarian Universalist Association President Peter Morales writes in Sanctuary and Gospel about his fear for people vilified during the last election campaign, especially undocumented Latino immigrants and Muslims. He acknowledges that when hatred is unleashed towards some, all marginalized people are at risk and urges us to remember that the human capacity for evil is real and must be resisted. In times such as these, what are we as religious people called to do, so that we may proclaim the love that guides us and be sanctuary for one another? Continue reading...
UNDERSTANDING THE BIBLE FOR CULTURAL LITERACY
Four Sundays beginning March 19, 1-3 p.m. in Channing

This class, facilitated by Justin Almeida, UU seminarian and UUC's Education Program Coordinator, is an opportunity to explore Hebrew & Christian scriptures from a liberal religious perspective. Participants read texts and explore scripture through discussion, dialogue, guided meditation, small group work, and creative exercises. This program is ideal for those who have had negative or limiting experiences with the Bible, and those who just wish to enhance their knowledge of the Bible for cultural literacy in a non-judgmental, dogma-free setting.

Please register in advance so we can make sure to have enough handouts. No fee. If you need
childcare during this event, please contact Melody Moberg by Wednesday, March 8.
REMINDERS
LIVING THE COVENANT
Saturday, March 4, 9 a.m. to noon in Knatvold

Unitarian Universalism is grounded in covenant--but what does that mean, and how is it practiced? At this half-day workshop with the Rev. Jon Luopa, we'll look at theological and practical understandings of covenant, consider how we build and lead groups in covenant, wrestle with what happens when covenant is broken, and learn how relationship can be redeemed and healthy community reclaimed. As UUs, we must engage covenant not as a concept, but as a verb.

There is no charge for this workshop, but please register in advance so that we may better plan for your involvement. UUs from our neighboring churches are welcome as space is available.

This workshop is part of UUC's ongoing Leadership Development Series. The next in the series is "Intercultural Awareness and Practice" on April 29. Online registration is open now.
CLIMATE ACTION TEAM MEETING
Sunday, March 5, 1 p.m. in Howe

The next (monthly) meeting of the Climate Action Team next Sunday. Note that this is a week earlier than our usual meeting date due to some scheduling conflicts. Everyone is welcome to attend.
PLEDGE SUNDAY: MARCH 12

Picture all the ways UUC brings joy and meaning to our lives:
  • Encouraging your own spiritual growth through worship, music, reflection and connection;
  • Offering opportunities to live out your values with people who share them;
  • Addressing larger issues in the community and the world through movements like immigration reform, Black Lives Matter, and Standing on the Side of Love.
In two weeks, we'll all be asked to do our part to invest in our beloved community with a pledge of financial support that sustains our staff and our programs. During the services on March 12 and March 19, you'll find a pledge form with your name on it as you enter the sanctuary, and there will be time during the service to fill it out and put it in a sacred vessel with the others.

In preparation, consider the importance of UUC to you, and think about where you fit on the Fair Giving Guide. In addition, this year, we're suggesting you make your pledge an ongoing commitment to UUC, which will automatically renew a year from now.

We're gathering stories of how our friends at UUC find meaning in contributing to the life of this community. If you'd like to share yours, please contact Susan Howlett at 206-545-2186 or susan@susanhowlett.com.

Chalice Camp 2016 Registration forms for Chalice Camp 2017 and counselor applications are now available! UUC's seventh annual summer day camp. The theme of camp this year is "world religions." Camp is open to children entering grades 1-5 in the fall of 2017.

We hire eight teen counselors from UUC, to provide leadership and job opportunities for our youth, and to create a multigenerational community for our campers that will last through the following church year. This July and August, kids will learn about world religions--focusing on Islam, Christianity, Judaism, Buddhism and Hinduism.

PAGES FROM THE UUC BOOKSTORE

Cover of A is for Activist Did you hear about a book from the pulpit that you must read? The UUC Bookstore has numerous titles that were featured in previous services. A is for Activist, the book Justin read in the January Time for All Ages, is here. We also have copies of Parker Palmer's A Hidden Wholeness, books of speeches by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and poetry selections by Mary Oliver, John O'Donoghue, and Langston Hughes.

Cover of A Hidden Wholeness Back by popular demand, we now have CD's of hymns. Unfortunately, the CD's recorded by the UU Choir in Oakland are no longer available. The CD we do have contains hymns that may be less familiar, but have appeared in services over the years. So if you're tongue-tied by the songs in the teal hymnal, help is here. Stop in and check out what's in stock.

WEDGWOOD MEANINGFUL MOVIE Poster for The Other Side of Immigration
Friday, March 10, 7 p.m. at Jubilee Hall, Our Lady of the Lake Church, 8900 35th Avenue NE

This month's showing is a double feature:

Award-winning
The Other Side of Immigration (55 min, 2009) is based on interviews with men and women in the Mexican countryside. It explores why so many people leave small Mexican towns to work in the United States and what happens to the families and communities they leave behind. By understanding "the other side" of the story, we can begin to think about new and more creative ways that the U.S. and Mexican governments can work together to develop new solutions. The film is based on director Roy Germano's Ph.D. research.

Trailer for "Locked in a Box"
Another award winner,
Locked in a Box--Rediscovering our Humanity in Immigration Detention (24 min, 2015), traces the lives of individuals who fled their homelands in search of safety and freedom only to end up in U.S. prisons. The film portrays the experience of people detained in the U.S. Immigration prison system and of those visiting them.

Please join us for the films' showings. It's FREE and open to the public. Donations to defray cost of screening rights gladly accepted. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Parking is available on NE 89th and NE 90th streets. The film begins at 7 p.m. with a facilitated community discussion to follow.
