Our award-winning social-emotional programs focus on increasing social intelligence and pro-social behavior.  We provide direct instruction for children and teens on how to improve social skills and use effective problem solving techniques with peers, siblings and parents.  We find a great deal of value in providing opportunities for kids and teens to practice and apply those skills in our welcoming and deliberately unstructured social environment (similar to indoor recess) that includes the extra layers of facilitation and support to increase your child's or teen's social abilities and conflict resolution skills. Recess, lunch and other unstructured times of the day are the hardest for children and teens to navigate. We are the real-time practice and application place for social learning, all while your child is actively playing, interacting and having fun!
A NOTE FROM DONNA
I received this email (I did change a little wording for confidentiality purposes) from a very nice 8th grader at the Acera School in Winchester looking for some assistance on a project she is doing that is focused on understanding social anxiety:

Hi! My name is Sarah E. and I am an eighth-grade student at the Acera School in Winchester, MA. Every year, the school hold a science symposium for all of its students. This year my project is focusing on the social anxiety symptoms caused in different types of communication.

From your website I noticed that you work with clients that may have social anxiety. I was wondering if you would be willing to give the link to most of my survey to some if your families. It would be extremely useful for my research. The survey will be 100% anonymous.

I will be using the results to see what types of communication are most difficult for people with social anxiety. The survey consists of about 15 questions, most of them asking on a scale of 1 to 10 how much anxiety does someone have communicating in a certain way with either a family member, friend, or stranger.

I would really appreciate your participation in this research.

Best,
Sarah E., Acera School

For those of you who would be willing to help Sarah with her research by answering for yourself or a family member/child, here is the link:

MISS DONNA'S TIP OF THE WEEK
Why do grown-ups yell?

That's the question I asked one of my social groups this past week as I found myself getting to that place that all adults get to when you have to make yourself heard.

No grown up likes to yell. For me, it's one of the last tools in the bag. When a kid tells me that he or she has a teacher that yells a lot, I know that it probably one heck of a hectic classroom.

I needed everyone's attention the other day. When it comes to cleaning up and transitioning to end our fun playtime together, with some groups, we are working on that. The minute I start to talk about the transition, there are many kids that will shoot threw the roof with their behavior and yell, scream, or start running around wildly. When you have most of the kids in the group doing that, you will find yourself yelling to get everyone's attention. Guaranteed.

However, the lesson comes after you yell. Ideally, it's a controlled yell, with purpose. Followed by a calmer demeanor and full explanation of why you yelled. My conversation last week went like this. After I yelled and had everyone's attention.

"Now, can anyone tell me why an adult just had to yell?"

"Because we weren't listening?"

"That was only part of it. I yelled because when I said something simple, that it was time to clean up, everybody decided to behave in a naughty way. There's no reason to do that when an adult makes a simple request of you. I know that no one likes to end our time together and I don't either. Choosing to misbehave is not going to change the fact that it is time to clean up and leave."

We proceeded to clean up in a calmer fashion with a couple of kids spontaneously apologizing and modeling how to smooth things over for the other kids in the group. I don't ever like to resort to yelling, but it happens. It's the explanation that follows the yell that kids need to hear in order to be able to make a choice to change the behavior.
