Focus on Student Learning

Food Webs in the Marine Ecosystem
In our oceanography unit, second graders have been investigating the role of food webs in the marine ecosystem. As students explored how energy is transferred to the different animals, questions naturally arose. Our students were curious about several things, such as the effects of over or under population of certain species, how sustainable food webs are, and how human interaction with the ecosystem affected the various food webs.

In order to explore these questions, we used tumbling blocks to represent a food chain and devised a game to help us further understand how everything worked. Students had cards with different scenarios, such as "oil spill in the ocean", or "whales have migrated out of the area." As students read the cards, different blocks were pulled out of the food chain, and we were excited to see how many events could happen before the food chain collapsed.

This week in Middle School...

Adolescent Growth and Development
Middle School students all had an Adolescent Growth and Development lesson on Monday during their science time.  The classes went well, and Mr. Chain and I appreciated the overall maturity from the students. They were all encouraged to talk with parents if they have any additional follow up questions, or they are always welcome to come see me or Mr. Chain.

Eighth grade visits the UVA Medical Center
This week the 8th grade traveled to the UVA Medical Center for a private exhibition led by several healthcare professionals. Nurses, surgeons, physician assistants, perfusionists, and blood bank laboratory scientists all donated their time to walk our students through their specialties and explain how everyone works together to save the lives of patients with cardiovascular problems.  After their initial discussion, they were broken into smaller groups and led through a thorough dissection of the heart where the doctors pointed out intricate details of coronary arteries and valves.  Knowing the 8th graders had a test the following day, these doctors were keen to help explain any misconceptions and ensure they knew their material. To wrap up their visit, our students gowned up and toured the operating room to learn about the specialized roles of each person involved in an open heart surgery. The students loved this visit so much that they wore their gowns while taking their cardiovascular test and throughout the rest of the day.  A very special thank you goes to Dr. Gorav Ailawadi and April Howell at UVA for coordinating such an exceptional and rewarding experience for our 8th grade.
