As spring break approaches and the end of the school year is in sight, remember that this is the time to begin talking with your public schools about equitable services for the 2017-18 school year. With the changes made in the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), it is critical that timely consultation takes place. 

For those who attended Public Policy Day last week, Fred Williams gave a presentation related to all the changes through ESSA, including Title 1 A, Title II A, and Title IV. If you were unable to attend this year's Public Policy Day or would like additional information, there are some free webinars that explain these changes as well as explain the process of effective consultation. The information for these free webinars can be found in the professional development section of the MANS notes.

Nominations are being accepted for the 2017 Zwers Award. Three of these awards are presented at the Administrators' Conference to honor the memory of Fr. John  B. Zwers, a founding member of the Michigan Association of Non-public Schools. A Pastor from each of our constituency groups, Catholic, Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod, and Christian Schools International, will be honored for their dedication to faith-based education.

MANS is currently accepting applications for the 2017 Student Intern Position. The intern will work at our Lansing location and provide support to the MANS staff. Responsibilities will include:

• Assisting the Executive Director with legislative issues
• Working with the Director of Constituency Services on related Michigan Non-public School Accrediting Association (MNSAA) projects 
• Working with the Program Associate on communications and business partner engagement 
• Assisting the Administrative Assistant with event preparation.

The U.S. Department of Education is hosting a Teach to Lead Summit in Columbus, Ohio, May 5-7, 2017. The Summit brings teachers, leaders, and other stakeholders together to collaborate, problem solve, and develop action plans to benefit students and schools. 

In order to participate in the Summit, schools must submit their team's teacher leadership ideas by March 30, 2017. Each team must contain one active teacher and total of 2-5 members. If your application is selected, recipients receive free registration, hotel accommodations if traveling longer than 50 miles, and some meals.

The Meemic Foundation and Office Depot/Office Max are offering an opportunity to give up to $500 for supplies to a school in need. Nominations are due by May 1, 2017. 

The Meemic Foundation is hosting a community conversation on bullying. This opportunity allows schools to come together to discuss what is and isn't working in the classroom to create a safe learning environment for all. Registration is free for Meemic Foundation club members and $5.00 for non-members. For more information  and to register, click  here . 

The Great Lakes Homeland Security Training will include one day focused on school safety. The School Track will offer a number of workshops geared towards improving school safety. The School Track training qualifies for six State Continuing Education Clock Hours (SCECHs) and is free to to the first 300 educators. For more information and to register, click  here .
