Good People Help Us Do Good Work!
Without people like you, it wouldn't be possible for the team at The Open Door Shelter to provide support to people in need in our community. Thank you for caring with all the good deeds you do every day to make it possible to give a hand up!

Times are tough for many families in Fairfield County. In the past year, we've seen a 26% increase in the number of children staying at the Shelter. We know the hardship that families endure in order to try to pay rent each month, and The Open Door Shelter is committed to making a difference. The Shelter plans to transform multi-family homes into affordable family apartments close to public transportation. Parents will be able to work with our case managers, and children can come to our Family Resource Center for homework help and after-school activities.

If you would like to help families who need a place to live within their budget, please donate to The Open Door Shelter.

What does it mean to move into a home of your own?

Housing the Homeless - Near & Far Aid
Housing the Homeless

It truly does take a village to change a life, and we're honored to work with  Near & Far Aid to help people in our community who are struggling with homelessness and poverty.

When Near & Far Aid created a video to share the stories of some of the people who have moved from homelessness to homes of their own, they featured Ruth. Ruth and her children came to The Open Door Shelter in 2016. She worked with our case managers as she finished school and searched for a job, and her children excelled in school and got involved in extracurricular activities.

By autumn, Ruth and her children were living in their own apartment! Ruth continues to work with our staff, and her children still attend our after school program for homework help and support.
Thanks to Ingenuity, a new warm welcome at the Shelter

At The Open Door Shelter, we greet many people in our lobby every day - clients, volunteers, donors, staff, members of the community, and more. We want each person who comes to the Shelter to know that they are welcome, that they are respected, and that we are glad they have come through the door.

The fantastic team at Ingenuity Design worked with Enhance A Colour to give our lobby a whole new look! Volunteers from Ingenuity Design painted the lobby walls and created a mural that Enhance A Colour printed. We're so glad to have such a beautiful image welcoming people to The Open Door Shelter and want to thank them for their hard work!

We couldn't do it without YOU... Thank you!

There are wonderful people working every day to make a difference at The Open Door Shelter! Follow us on Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram to check it out.

Thanks to a grant from the Weinberg Foundation, we now have funding to fit out the job training center at the Smilow SoNo Life Center with furniture and equipment.

We opened a clothing distribution center in January and are open every Saturday for members of the community who need free clothing. Thanks to wonderful volunteers, the center is an organized and welcoming place! If you would like to volunteer at the clothing distribution center, or if you or someone you know needs help with clothing, please contact Erin at (203) 866-1057 x29 or [email protected].
