We are looking forward to our Spring Dinner Theater on Thursday, March 23 starting at   6:30 p.m. We hope to see everyone there! 
  
Spring is right around the corner and warm weather is upon us! We would like to take this opportunity to remind all GOC students of our dress code.
  
  • Shirts/Blouses/Tops/T-shirts - Blouses/shirts should be constructed so that the tops of the shoulders are covered (no halter tops, strapless tops, tank tops, spaghetti straps, or bare shoulder tops of any type will be allowed). Blouses/shirts that expose any portion of the waist, hips or midriff are not allowed. Other blouses/shirts that are not appropriate for school include, but are not limited to, low-cut, see through, backless, or tube tops. Rips or holes are not allowed in shirts/tops.
  • Shorts/Skirts/Pants - Shorts and skirts must be a mid-thigh or longer length. Holes or rips are not allowed above the knee for pants or jeans. No sagging pants which reveal undergarments.
  • Students will be required to change clothes provided by GOC if they come dressed inappropriately.

MOVE ON WHEN READY (MOWR)
Rising 9-12 Grade Students

Move On When Ready (MOWR) is a program for rising 9-12 grade students who can earn college credit while still attending high school.

Please join us for a live virtual MOWR meeting scheduled for Monday, March 20 from 6:30-7:30 p.m. Jennifer Morse from Gwinnett Technical College will be our featured guest speaker to answer all of your questions. She will also discuss the Accuplacer Test (formally known as the Compass Test).

If you are interested in MOWR at Gwinnett Technical College for classes starting this summer or August 2017, GOC will offer the Accuplacer Test on our campus Thursday, March 29 at 4:30 p.m. Please arrive no later than 4:15 p.m. to check in at the front desk. This is a computer based test. There is no registration required and no registration fee. The test will take approximately 1 hour and test results will be available immediately. All students need to have applied to Gwinnett Technical College before they can sit for the Accuplacer Test on March 29.

IMPORTANT COMPUTER SECURITY TIPS RECOMMENDED BY GCPS

Keep your computer secure with the following email safety tips:
  • Email attachments are a common tool for hackers.
  • Keep your operating system and virus protection current.
  • Be wary of unsolicited emails, even from people you know.
  • If something doesn't look right, don't open it. If you know or suspect an email is malicious, delete it and empty your trash.
  • Beware of email scams circulating.
GOC CARES FOOD DRIVE
March 21-23
 
Please help us show the community that GOC cares by donating to the food drive next week. All non-perishable items such as canned vegetables, peanut butter, and jelly and personal items such as soap, shampoo, and diapers are appreciated. You may place your items in the GOC Cares Wagon in the main lobby next week.

ADVANCED PLACEMENT PRACTICE EXAMS

GOC will be offering a practice test session for any student registered to take an Advanced Placement exam in May.

The practice test dates are as follows:
  • April 12 from 3:30-5:00 p.m.
  • April 13 from 3:30-5:00 p.m.

GEORGIA MILESTONE TESTING
Grades 4-8
 
The Georgia Milestone End of Grade assessment applies to students in grades 4-8 and is part of some students promotion criteria.
  • The schedule for the End of Grade assessment begins April 17 and runs through April 26.
  • Learning labs will not be held the week of April 17-21 for grades 4-8.
  • Learning labs will resume for students in grades 4, 6, 7, and 8 the following week. Students in 5th grade only will not have learning lab this particular week due to additional testing.

GATEWAY TESTING

The Science and Social Studies Gateway exams are a Gwinnett County graduation requirement. This includes students in 10th grade and those students who have received communication from the testing office. Students must be on-campus no later than 7:45 a.m. on the following dates:

Social Studies Gateway Exam
  
Students have been given access to the GOC High School Gateway Intervention Course 2016-2017 in their course dropdown.

RICH EXPERIENCE
4-H Program: Rockets to the Rescue        Grades 4-12
What:
Rockets to the Rescue is an engaging activity that gives young scientists an opportunity to let their imagination take flight and explore how aerospace engineering addresses real world problems, such as delivering food and supplies in emergency situations.

Figure Drawing and Painting Workshop

Grades 4-12

Would you like to learn how to draw humans realistically? Do you love to draw and paint people? Then this Art Experience is for you!
In this workshop, students will learn about facial and body human figure proportions, then put their knowledge to work as they draw and paint a series of facial and body portraits. Come have fun learning new technical drawing and painting skills in this Art Experience!

The Facts:
Printmaking is a unique form of art because you can achieve the same results "over and over" again, unlike other types of art such as drawing and painting. In this printmaking workshop, we will create a series of colorful "gel" (or gelatin) prints with a wide variety of objects. We will use everything from leaves to bubble wrap to construct our prints! Come have fun creating beautiful prints in this Art Experience!

Let's Spring Clean Our Health!

What is it? Come join us for 30 minutes (12:15-12:45 p.m. - eat lunch AFTER) of EXTRA fitness and running activities around campus! Please be sure to wear good activity shoes and wear comfortable clothing!

Why? To get in shape during the spring and be able to have FUN during our annual Fun Run/Field Day in May! Who knows you may even win a prize, plus spring clean your health!

When? These activities will take place on the non-gym weeks and will only last 30 minutes to avoid conflict with fine arts club.

Join us for the fitness and sport activities based on course curriculum! All students are welcome even if you are not in a PE course! We will begin each session with fitness activities to help support the "Get Fit and Run Club!"

FINE ARTS CLUB

We haven't forgotten you! The fine arts students are currently preparing the musical "Disney's Peter Pan, Jr." for the March 23 dinner theater performance. Any Fine Arts Club students who are not involved in the musical are welcome to attend the rehearsals for the musical. You could also have an opportunity to be involved "behind the scenes" in such areas as set design, costumes, or audio/video assistance. Please notify Dr. Pritchard or Ms. Campbell if you want to help out. 

Once the musical is over, we will have a few more "regular" Fine Arts Club sessions, so please put them on your calendar:

MILITARY ACADEMY DAY 
Grades 8-12
 
 
Members of the Georgia Congressional Delegation will host an annual statewide academy event to familiarize students with the application and nomination process and to expose them to academy life. Representatives from all five academies as well as cadets and midshipmen will be in attendance and ready to answer questions.

The spring Academy Day will be held on Saturday, April 29 from 10:00-11:30 a.m. at Dobbins Air Reserve Base located at 1408 Dobbins Place, Dobbins ARB, Marietta, GA 30069.
