Angie Thomas
and Linda Williams Jackson
(moderated by Corabel Shofner)

Sixteen-year-old Starr Carter's world shatters when she witnesses the fatal shooting of her childhood best friend, Khalil, at the hands of a police officer. Khalil was unarmed. Soon afterward, Khalil's death is a national headline. When it becomes clear the police have little interest in investigating the incident, protesters take to the streets and Starr's neighborhood becomes a war zone. What everyone wants to know is: What really went down that night? And the only person alive who can answer that is Starr. But what Starr does--or does not--say could destroy her community. It could also endanger her life. Angie Thomas's searing debut about an ordinary girl in extraordinary circumstances addresses issues of racism and police violence with intelligence, heart, and unflinching honesty.

It's Mississippi in the summer of 1955, and Rose Lee Carter can't wait to move north. But for now, she's living with her sharecropper grandparents on a white man's cotton plantation.  Then, one town over, an African American boy, Emmett Till, is killed for allegedly whistling at a white woman. When Till's murderers are unjustly acquitted, Rose realizes that the South needs a change . . . and that she should be part of the movement.  Linda Williams Jackson's moving debut seamlessly blends a fictional portrait of an African American family and factual events from a famous trial that provoked change in race relations in the United States.

Dana Chamblee Carpenter

She's spent the last seven hundred years hiding in plain sight. But Mouse's past is about to catch up with her.   The Devil's Bible. Once considered an eighth wonder of the world, the ancient book is shrouded in mystery. No one knows who wrote it or where it was written. Even dry-boned scholars whisper about the secrets hidden in the book: How it calls to the power-hungry. How it drives people mad. How it was written in the shadows by the hand of the devil himself.  But no one knows the truth--no one except Mouse.  Desperate and on the run, Mouse unexpectedly finds hope in a stranger's kindness. But it will take more than hope to win this game of souls--a battle between good and evil set in motion long ago at the birth of the Devil's Bible.

A luminous, masterful novel of suspense about Celine, an elegant, aristocratic private eye who specializes in reuniting families. Celine is trying to make amends for a loss in her own past. Combining the exquisite plotting and gorgeous evocation of nature that have become his hallmark, with a wildly engrossing story of family, privilege, and childhood loss, Peter Heller gives us his finest work to date.

The mesmerizing new novel from the prize-winning author of  The Good Thief. This father-daughter epic weaves back and forth through time and across America, from Alaska to the Adirondacks. Both a coming-of-age novel and a literary thriller,  The Twelve Lives of Samuel Hawley is an unforgettable story that explores what it means to be a hero and the cost we pay to protect the people we love most.

" The Twelve Lives of Samuel Hawley is one part Quentin Tarantino, one part Scheherazade, and twelve parts wild innovation. Hannah Tinti proves herself to be an old fashioned storyteller of the highest order." - Ann Patchett

His hero, Luigi Lemoncello, the most notorious and creative gamemaker in the world, just so happens to be the genius behind the construction of the new town library. Lucky Kyle wins a coveted spot as one of twelve kids invited for an overnight sleepover in the library, hosted by Mr. Lemoncello and riddled with lots and lots of games. But when morning comes, the doors stay locked. Kyle and the other kids must solve every clue and figure out every secret puzzle to find the hidden escape route.

Seth and Carter are young music producers but when they create a blues song that purports to be an early, lost recording, they open themselves to a world of mystery and violence.  As two generations of obsessed collectors make their way to Mississippi they enter a phantasmagorical realm where history is ever present and ready to mete out punishment for the sins of the past.  Written in prose that brings the music alive, the author has created a discourse on cultural appropriation that is both pointed and disquieting while also absorbing the reader. -- BC
