Baraboo 21 Club Hosts Vietnam Veterans Breakfast & Ceremony
Baraboo High School's Baraboo 21 Club along with BHS Social Studies teacher Mr. Argo held a breakfast and appreciation ceremony to honor Vietnam War Veterans (1961-1965) and Vietnam Era Veterans (1961-1975) on Friday, March 10.
The event was held to mark the 50th anniversary of the peak years of U.S. deployments to Vietnam, from 1967-1970.
Each veteran received a medal of appreciation as well as an all-you-can-eat breakfast sponsored by Sysco.
The ceremony included performances by the BHS choir and a brass band comprised of BHS students, and guest speakers, including Vietnam Veteran Mayor Mike Palm, who made a special proclamation declaring March 10 "Vietnam Veterans Appreciation Day" in Baraboo.
Many Veterans spoke of the poor treatment they received upon returning from Vietnam and the feeling that their service and their sacrifice was unappreciated. After the ceremony, one veteran said, "T
hank you for trying to heal some very deep open wounds with this breakfast."

Anoop Chandrashekar Receives Excellence Scholars Award
Congratulations to BHS senior Anoop Chandrashekar, recipient of the 2017 Herb Kohl Educational Foundation Excellence Scholars award.
Excellence Scholarship recipients have demonstrated excellence in the academic arena and high motivation to achieve, have displayed a broad range of activity and leadership outside the academic setting, and have shown strong promise for succeeding in college and beyond.
Excellence Scholarship recipients are selected by a statewide committee composed of civic leaders, representatives of education-related associations, and the program's co-sponsors: the Wisconsin Newspaper Association Foundation, Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction, Wisconsin Council of Religious and Independent Schools (WCRIS), regional Cooperative Educational Service Agencies (CESA), and the Association of Wisconsin School Administrators.
Anoop will receive a $5,000 scholarship.
Earlier this year Anoop earned a spot among the nation's most elite high school students as a National Merit Scholarship SemiFinalist. Anoop is among the best and brightest at BHS, taking college courses through UW-Baraboo/Sauk County and participating in multiple clubs at school, including founding the Medical Research Club. He hopes to use his math and science abilities to help others through a career in medicine.

BEA Holds School Board Candidate Forum
The Baraboo Education Association sponsored a School Board Candidate Forum last night at JYMS.
In attendance were candidates Peter Vedro, Doug Mering, Tim Heilman, and Gary Cummings.
The candidates spoke on such topics as Act 10, inclusion in schools, instructional time in the classroom, and areas in the district that are seen as successes as well as areas that may need improvement.
Thank you to the candidates for giving our district the opportunity to ask questions, and thank you to BEA for sponsoring this event.
Make-up Time for Weather-Related Closings, Delays
During the 2016-17 school year, the Baraboo School District has had 5 full-day snow days, 2 early dismissals of 2 hours each, and one late start of 2 hours.
The District will use the following schedule to make up lost instructional time due to weather-related school delays and cancellations.
At the
Baraboo High School, five minutes have been cut from passing time for the past 35 days to make up some of the time. After Spring Break, three passing times will be cut to six minutes to make up the rest of the displaced time.
At the
Elementary Schools, beginning
March 20th, four minutes will be eliminated from lunch recess time for the rest of the school year. Students will still have either a morning or afternoon recess break and a 26-minute recess at lunchtime.
For
BELC 4K, three Wednesdays will be added to the schedule:
Wednesday, April 12th
Wednesday, May 10th
Wednesday, May 24th
Both morning and afternoon sessions will be held at their regular times. The bus company has already been notified of this change.
West will acquire 5 new playground equipment pieces, including one comet, two spinners, one balance beam and one 2-seat rocker.
All of these 5 playground pieces will help provide more student engagement on the playground while also helping students to develop gross motor, strength and balancing skills.
The Baraboo School District maintenance team will install the 5 pieces on the West playground during the summer of 2017.
West held four fundraiser nights at Dairy Queen in Baraboo in January and February of this year that helped to provide $459. West donations from parents and community members created $2,115 worth of funding, and the West-Willson Parent Association (WWPA) provided the remaining playground funding of $2,503.72.
The West staff would like to sincerely thank all of the supporters. Thank you for helping our Early Childhood, 4K and kindergarten children at West!
7th Grade Students Take STEM Trip
Last Friday, 50 7th grade students were able to take a trip to Chicago to visit the Museum of Science and Industry and the University of Illinois at Chicago.
Students enjoyed the hands on activities the museum provided. Each exhibit brought science, technology, engineering and math subjects to life with real-world examples.
Alex Puhl said, "I realized that there is so much more stuff than you would think that involves science and engineering."
Students also had the opportunity to talk with computer science and engineering students at the University of Illinois at Chicago. They told the students they chose their fields because they want to help others. They also impressed the importance of their early education and internships to their success.
Katie Duran said, "I thought this trip was just going to be about learning about cool things, but when we got the the university, I learned many opportunities for my future."
This trip was made possible by a grant from the Department of Education. JYMS received this grant to expose students to more STEM-related subjects and careers.

West, BELC Get Lesson in Self Defense
MasterMatt Schmitke from the Elite Self Defense Center in Baraboo spoke with West kindergarten and 4K students on January 26 and March 9. The main points of his message to students included using words to solve problems, having confidence in yourself, knowing when to walk away and also when to get assistance, and being a good classmate and friend to others. Baraboo FFA Attends Youth Livestock Event
Six members of the Baraboo FFA and students students of Agriculture Education had the opportunity to attend the Lodi Veterinary Care Youth Livestock Educational Day on March 11th.
The course is geared towards students interested in Veterinary Science, Dairy, Beef and the Cattle Industry.
Students had the opportunity to view four education sections: Microbiology including planting procedures, incubation of and identification of microorganisms; Animal Tissues, which included internal body systems; Feeding Cattle, discussing various feeds and the importance of raising healthy animals; and the Anatomy of Animal Bone Structures.

Parent Nights: Addressing Addiction
This school year the district is offering a series of Parent Nights, bringing in experts in different fields to give insights, resources and strategies for the issues that matter most to parents in our community.
Our final installment of the Parent Nights series, Addressing Addiction, will be on Monday, May 15 at 6 p.m. in the Jack Young Middle School Auditorium.
The discussion will focus recent trends and issues to be aware of to protect your student. Parents will also learn about available resources if they are concerned about their student's activity with alcohol or other drugs.
This event is free and open to the public. Parents and community members are encouraged to attend.
ABE Travels Around the World
On Thursday Night, Al Behrman Elementary held its 6th Annual Around the World Family Night.
Students, families and staff traveled between different classrooms decorated to represent different countries, including Ireland, Brazil, Poland, Jamaica, Costa Rica, India, Turkey, Korea, Australia, and Norway.
Students experienced different food, music, items and information specific to each country's culture, as well as fun activities at each station.
Approximately 75 families attended this amazing event!

ALICE Active Shooter Training for Parents, Students
The Baraboo School District takes its responsibility to protect the physical and psychological well-being of our students and staff very seriously.
As such, we will be implementing a strategy known as the ALICE protocol. ALICE is an acronym for Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter, and Evacuate and is endorsed by federal, state and local law enforcement officials.
Before we initiate conversations with students, we would like to share the ALICE protocol with parents. This opportunity facilitated by local safety officials will take place on April 11th at 6:00 PM in the Jack Young Middle School Auditorium.
Practice at each level in our district will be developmentally appropriate for the intended age and audience:
Elementary Schools - Local safety and school officials will read a book to students and engage the students in conversation on how to secure their classrooms and how to evacuate. In some instances, students may walk with teachers to a designated evacuation site close to school.
Jack Young Middle School and Baraboo High School - Students will be instructed on the full ALICE protocol which includes enhanced barricades and counter/evacuation measures.
If you do not want your child to participate in ALICE instruction and practice, please contact your child's principal. Furthermore, we encourage you to contact the principal at your child's school with any questions or concerns. Thank you for your collaboration in working to keep all of our students safe while at school.
JYMS Literacy Night with Author Pat Schmatz
Jack Young Middle School held its Annual Literacy Night on Tuesday, March 14 from 4:30-6:30 in the JYMS Commons.
Author
Pat Schmatz spoke to students in classrooms, during lunch, and at Literacy Night, followed by a book signing.
Before and after her presentation, students were able to choose a free book to keep from a wide selection of titles.
Everyone in attendance (students and parents/guardians) received free popcorn and a ticket to be entered in for some amazing door prizes!
Baraboo Bookmobile
Last summer, a Bookmobile was started in the Baraboo Community.
The mission of the Baraboo Bookmobile is to give out FREE books to students during the summer months. Books were collected and distributed for free at various locations throughout the summer.
In order to make it an even more successful service this year, we are looking for community feedback.

How is wind created?
JYMS students in Mr. Witthun's 8th grade science class are trying to answer this question by exploring the properties of air in a closed system.
Students created a closed system by placing a balloon around the mouth of a two liter soda bottle. The students then observed indirectly what happened to the air inside the bottle and balloon as they were placed in hot and cold water.

Kindness Abounds in North Freedom
Last week North Freedom Elementary School celebrated Random Acts of Kindness Week.
Each day had a different theme, like Manners Monday and Friendship Friday.
To celebrate their school, friendships and good behavior, North Freedom took a school photo with every student.
That is a lot of students to organize - the students would have to have excellent manners to pull off a great photo like this!

Teens N Theatre
Teens N Theatre (TNT) presents:"CUTTER"
An original play about a group of high schoolers and what it is like to be a teen. Some bully, some suffer, some fight, some support, some abuse, some step in and stand up for each other.
What: A performance, a post-show discussion, pizza and... a cake raffle!!
When: Thursday, March 23rd, 3:30pm to 4:30pm
Where: Baraboo High School Library/Media Center
Who: Teens*, teachers, and adults who care about teens
(*may be inappropriate for children under 13)

Why: Be entertained, be inspired, be fed before the Band and Choir Concerts, and win CAKE!
TNT is a group of Baraboo and Reedsburg teens using theatre as a fun and accessible way to address difficult issues faced by teens in our ever changing and complex world. Topics brought up in this script include self-injury, bullying, impacts of divorce, sexual pressure, intervention, and supporting each other. By bringing these issues out into the open, TNT hopes to demonstrate healthy coping, support and intervention skills and open up healing conversations.
Stay after school and take an hour out of your day and support your fellow classmates!
This is not a school-sponsored activity and the Baraboo School District does not fund or endorse this program/activity. TNT is a subsidiary of CAB Theatre in cooperation with the Baraboo School District, Pauquette Center for Psychological Services, and Hope House. TNT is supported in part by a grant from the Wisconsin Arts Board with funds from the State of Wisconsin and the National Endowment for the Arts, a grant from Culvers VIP Foundation, private donors, and the Al Ringling Theatre Mansion Museum.

The Baraboo School District will again be offering the Summer Academy for students who are currently in grades K-5 within the Baraboo School District and/or for students of this age that reside within the Baraboo School District attendance area.
The Summer Academy will include enrichment classes that have literacy and math integrated throughout each K-1st, 2nd-3rd, and 4th-5th grade class.
Al Behrman Elementary School (400 Mulberry St., Baraboo) will host Summer Academy from June 12-July 12 (no school on July 3rd-5th) and free breakfast and lunch will be available to students each day.

COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIPS: Baraboo Public Library
The Baraboo Public Library is a rich resource in the Baraboo Community, with youth events, activities and books, books, books!
Once a month the BPL is host to Desmond the Dog and Shadow the Cat. Children can sign up to read to them for 15 minutes. This gives the child a chance to work on their reading skills with a patient, attentive audience to help them gain confidence in their reading ability. Registration required.

BHS was recognized by the Wisconsin Advanced Placement Advisory Council (WAPAC) as a Pacesetter school in Advanced Placement (AP).

Our Art Department has a great event coming up - our first annual Fine Arts Night! Mark your calendars from 6-8 on April 27.
There will be music, live demonstrations, delicious food and more.
This event is a partnership between the BHS Art Department, the BHS Forensics Team, the BHS FCE Department and the BHS Music Department.
Community Members and Local Arts Organizations are encouraged to participate. Options include submitting art for display, setting up an information booth, performing a literary reading or demonstration of your craft, or any other artistic ability you'd like to showcase.
