President's Palette
Greetings!
I cannot believe how much we have accomplished so far this spring. Hats off to each of the Regional Coordinators for their successful Youth Art Month shows! The SCAEA's State Youth Art Month Show will be taking place April 3rd through May 1st at EdVenture Children's Museum in Columbia. The reception will be onApril 30th from 3:30pm to 4:30pm. A big thank you goes out to Sargent Art and Bhatki Oza for the wonderful prizes for our state winners.
Another hats off goes to Jennifer Fox (Secondary Division Coordinator) who hosted an incredible NAHS conference at the Columbia Museum of Art on March 11th. There were over 235 students/46 teachers/21 school representing. As well, we had 14 college and university tables and 20 sessions. An added bonus to this year's event was access to two current exhibitions at the museum -- the Salvador Dali Fantastical Fairy Tales and the Enduring Spirit: the Art of Tyrone Geter. Students had the opportunity to explore both of these exhibits, as well as the permanent collection of the museum.
For those of you who made it to the NAEA Conference in NYC, what a blast! Cynthia Hudson, Meg Skow and I represented the SCAEA at Delegates Assembly. What an incredible experience this is every year! There were some outstanding speakers and sessions! If you have not been able to attend a national conference, I urge you to do so. The next NAEA conference will be held in Seattle! Start saving now for this conference and the SCAEA's Fall one!
Speaking of the Fall Conference, plans are in full swing. Go ahead and mark your calendars for November 3-5 at USCB in Beaufort, SC. We have some exciting things planned!
You should be receiving information with links on Call for Proposals, Call for Nominations for Awards, and information on the R. Scott Hockman Teacher Grant and the Mary Whyte Teacher Award. Please consider presenting at the conference and please nominate deserving arts educators for one of our awards.
In regards to the Mary Whyte Award, there will be a fundraiser on May 12th where 100% of the proceeds go towards this award. Mary Whyte has been such a gracious proponent for arts educators and this is her way of giving back to us. Information on this fundraiser can be found on our FB page and on the Mary Whyte website at https://www.marywhyte.com/news.php. A
s well, think about applying for this award....it is $2500 to the winner, and $2500 worth of supplies donated by City Art...a total of $5000! Wow!

Eastern Region Mini Conference, Coptic Coptic Stitch Sketchbooks
May 13th at William H. Miller Gallery
Learn how to create your own sketchbook. Add the papers, pockets, and fun details that make it uniquely you. The method used to make it is called Coptic Stitch Binding. By having students create their own sketchbooks, we saw our class take a deeper ownership of their work and more pride in how they treated these assignments. This sessions includes all the materials needed, but we encourage you to bring your own papers & fabic so you can personalize it. The cost is $10.

Higher Ed Information from Tracey Hunter-Doniger
The College of Charleston and Converse College have teamed up to create a Read to Succeed course that is designed specifically for Visual Arts Educators. It discusses the Read to Succeed requirements, while making it relevant to the art room through visual literacy, art history and reading art text. This course was designed for any art teacher who teaches in grade PK-12. This course will be available soon at the South Carolina Department of Education and is 100% online.
Secondary Division News from Jennifer Fox
Thank you to all who attended the 2017 NAHS State Conference! 12 colleges and 279 attendees enjoyed a day of art-making and portfolio reviews amid the backdrop of the Columbia Museum of Art and their Salvador Dali and Tyrone Geter exhibits! Stylish t-shirts, yummy lunches outside, and door prizes courtesy of City Art in Columbia completed our day. Please make plans to join us next year.

2017 SCAEA YAM Flag Contest
Congratulations to Isabel Wallace, an eleventh grade student of Ginger
Hicks, the Fine Arts Department Chair at Pickens High School. Her flag
design was chosen to represent South Carolina at the 2017 NAEA
convention in New York City.

2017 SCAEA Youth Art Month Show
The 2017 South Carolina Youth Art Month Show will take place from April 4 -
April 30, 2017. It will feature twenty-four select works of art from the four SCAEA
Regions. The exhibition is at EdVenture Children's Museum at 211 Gervais
Street in Columbia, South Carolina. The artwork is located at the entrance to the
Museum and can be viewed during regular business hours.
Please join us on April 30, 2017 from 3:30 - 4:30 pm for the Closing Reception
and an Awards Presentation at 4:00 pm. This year our sponsor, Sargent Art, will
award student and teacher prizes for the winners including: Elementary School
Division Winner, Middle School Division Winner and High School Division
Winner. Each winning student will receive art supplies worth $100 and each
winning teacher will receive classroom art supplies worth $300. The Overall
winning student will receive a cash prize of $1,500 in the form of a check and the
Overall winning teacher will receive classroom art supplies worth $2,000. Thank
you to Sargent Art for their continued support of the SCAEA and the SC YAM.
News from Pre-Service Teacher Representative Amber Aylesworth
My name is Amber Aylesworth and I am currently attending school at Anderson University and looking forward to graduating this upcoming May! Thanks to my wonderful Cooperating Teacher, Mrs. Jennifer Fox, and the SCAEA Board, I now get the honor and privilege of serving the future art educators of South Carolina as the new Pre-Service Representative! Over the next few years, I look to reach out to the Pre-Service chapters in colleges across the state in order to begin building a community of Pre-Service students across the state. News from Ex-Officio Representative Scot Hockman
Preparing Educators for Arts Integration: Placing Creativity at the
Center of Learning was released in February and debuted at the
NAEA Convention in NYC.
Joyce Huser, Arts Associate at the Kansas Department of Education, and
Scot Hockman, retired Arts Associate at the SC Department of Education
wrote Chapter Nine of the book, Championing the Way to Effective Arts
Integration. In this chapter are
nearly two pages (pp 118-119) describing the work of South Carolina's
own Arts in Basic Curriculum (ABC) Project. It also tells how the arts
changed the school's ecology at Hand Middle School in Richland County
School District One. Hand was Time Magazine's Middle Level School of
the Year as announced in the May 21, 2001 issue.
As described by its publisher Teacher College Press, this resource
examines professional development approaches from across the United
States to help schools and allied arts groups integrate the arts into
an already crowded K-12 curriculum. The authors document the purposes
and structures of a broad spectrum of current efforts and programs.
Several of these programs have been in place for decades, thus
demonstrating their sustainability and effectiveness. Emphasizing the
value of collaboration among teachers, artists, educational leaders,
and community partners, the book draws on the broad range of
experiences of the authors, who came together as a working group of
the Arts Education Partnership. Readers will find strong, empirically
tested models of arts integration to inform curriculum development and
teacher professional learning.
Opportunities, Contests, Scholarships, and More
S.C. Department of Education 2017 School Bus Safety Poster Contest
The South Carolina Department of Education Office of Transportation is seeking entries for the 2017 National School Bus Safety Poster Contest.
This year's theme is "My Driver - My Safety Hero!" which emphasizes the important role the bus driver plays in keeping students safe on and around the bus. The competition is divided into five divisions based on grade level and is open to students in grades K-12. Entries must be received by the Office of Transportation by 4:30 p.m. on July 3, 2017, with winners announced in early August 2017.
First place winning posters in each division will be entered for judging in the National School Bus Safety Poster Contest, with judging held at the NAPT Conference and Trade Show in the fall of 2017.
The South Carolina Overall Contest Winner and first, second, and third place winners in each division will receive a plaque and a framed copy of their posters. Additionally, the Overall Contest Winner's poster will be used to promote School Bus Driver Appreciation Week in February 2018.
The National Overall Contest Winner's poster will be used to promote School Bus Safety Week in October 2018.
National Young Arts Foundation:
How do students apply for US Presidential Scholar in the Arts?
Young Arts, the core program of The National Young Arts Foundation nominates up to 60 candidates for consideration as US Presidential Scholars in the Arts following participation in Young Arts week. Young Arts can be contacted directly for specific questions at 1 800 970 ARTS or via email at

The registration deadline for this program is in October every year. As an Arts Educator, please go online to view the student application process and get familiar with the program prior to next fall. You may have some students you want to encourage to participate.
